This place is aMaZiNg! For some background I am an Asian girl with typical Asian girl hair texture, not everyone knows how to cut my hair, it's very thick. The other day just before my wedding, I stupidly went to Park Jun (https://www.yelp.com/biz/park-jun-and-jk-hair-art-new-haven?hrid=0UZCIL1n2m1s0skDcOcV8g&utm_source=ishare&utm_content=review) to get my bangs trimmed and they destroyed my hair! I don't think that lady knew how to cut hair, my cat could've cut my hair better. Unfortunately I had no choice but to go with it...after my wedding I came back and decided to chop all my hair off, little did I realize it'd get chopped off in style. The prices are very reasonable, his wife shampoos your hair first and then his magical scissors go to work creating a masterpiece on your head

Thanks Jack! I ended up loving it!!

I was iiiiitching to do something brand new with my hair asap and did a couple of yelp searches for local places. Granted there were only three reviews for this newbie salon, they were all five stars. Call me judgmental but their site also featured chinese...put two and two together--I assumed they knew asian hair well. I was the first and only one there at 9:30am on Sunday (duh, most people are sane and sleeping). Jack greeted me enthusiastically when he saw me wander in. I showed him a picture of my beloved goddess, miranda kerr, and asked him to perform miracles. It involved highlights and a wavy perm....and then the language barrier became an issue. He gestured to me and spoke chinese and I gestured to him and spoke english. I had plenty of time to spare so it was actually really funny. He ended up calling his wife and basically told her this girl is out of her mind haha. I don't have the typically straight and sleek vietnamese hair (gee thanks, ma). His wife explained to me over the phone. It was another while before we had anything established but basically he couldn't do what I wanted because my hair won't perm right. Anyway, I settled for bleach and color. It came out FANTASTIC.....but completely different from the picture of Lauren Conrad....without the ombre effect. I ended up pretty much a dark blonde with some neat highlights. I had such a sinking feeling in my stomach when he didn't proceed to add a darker color or anything. But I won't deduct any stars since I really like the result. In conclusion, please make sure his wife is there. She speaks some english so you can convey your wants better, otherwise you'll just have to trust his talent. I ended up playing receptionist a couple of times when the phone rang since he really didn't know english. It's cool--no big deal. They also have great coupons on their site so check em out before you come in. The entire double bleach and blowdry cost me $96. I'll probably be back since I really like what he did.

I've been going to Shiny salon for many years. Jack is very talented, detailed and reliable. The shop is also very family friendly. My 4 year old son just got his first haircut there today- look how happy he is! I highly recommend this place.

New to this area and saw the reviews that Jack knows how to cut asian hair! I called to make an appointment and was told the price was $55 , which included tip. (Cash only!) I was a little concerned that the it was a little pricey, but decided to go. Jack only speaks Chinese but we managed with my minimal Mandarin. I had waist length hair and he washed and cut it so nicely! It ended up being shorter than I initially wanted but I love how it turned out! I was there for over an hour and he really took his time and meticulously cut every strand of hair. I never felt rushed. I love the end product and really felt like it was worth the price. Highly recommend :)

    I found a Great Salon!

I found a Great Salon! Jack has done my hair now for over 2 years and always satisfied beyond expectations! I get stopped on the street daily " who does your hair looks so stylish ! " His wife Amanda does the wash and boy it's like a trip to the Spa! Being a hairdresser years back I'm picky and know a Great haircut! This is the place to get one!

New York quality in New Haven! A small salon operated by a married Chinese couple who had previously did business in Flushing, NY for 16 years. My friend and I went because of a recommendation, and we were not disappointed! I have been to high-end salons in NYC and Hong Kong, and even though Shiny Salon charged me cheaper, the quality of the products is the same, and the cut is better. They let us use the coupons on their website even though they are expired (20% off! Woot woot!). I'm so glad to have found this place, and I will certainly be back, even though I live an hour and 15 minutes away. Great salons are hard to find! A cut is $35 without the coupon. Definitely try it out!

    My new haircut :)

I went in again today, and Erin fixed my hair (free of charge) and it looks absolutely amazing. The roots are blended perfectly, and my root touch up looks so perfect and it is blended seamlessly. She also gave me a free blow out, which she absolutely did not need to, but she did and my hair just looks so great! I am more than happy with it. I also did the conditioning treatment, which revitalized my dead hair. Overall, I would highly recommend Salon J and especially Erin. I have always loved her haircuts, and I'm now happy that I can confidently endorse her hair dyeing and root touch ups as well. I used to go to New York to get my hair done, and my only regret is that I didn't go to Erin earlier. I'll miss her and amazing hair cutting/dyeing!

So so disappointed and unflattering on me. I hate being seen in public with this hair that cost over $300.

For this reason, I have had more than one fobulous perm/dye job/you name it. I have also learned over time that my hair - dark, thin, and straight - doesn't require that much expertise to handle. Regardless, I find comfort in Korean hair salons, and am living proof of the efficacy of brainwashing. So when I found Park Jun on Orange around the same time that my bangs were going rogue, I decided to break my no-haircuts-in-New-Haven rule and see what happened. The space is clean, well-kept, and pretty open, with most of the interior visible through windowed walls from outside. I walked in and the lady on duty, who I suspect is the owner as there was no one else around, asked if I could wait for a little bit while she finished up with another customer (a male of, I suspect, the Korean persuasion, who minutes later had a spiffy haircut). I didn't wait long. I asked for a basic cut, and that's what I got. Shampoo, cut, blow-dry and all took twenty minutes or so, and cost a reasonable $40. Or was it $30? Shit, there go my "Useful" votes. The lady was very friendly and asked me questions about myself as if she were actually interested. She didn't judge me for my totally worthless language skills either. The one thing that I did find pretty funny was that I left the place with my hair styled almost exactly like hers, kind of straight with the ends curled in, and not a whole lot like mine when I walked in. It didn't matter though, as it washed back to normal, and I was happy with the cut. I'm glad I found this place and I'll be back again for East Coast hair maintenance.
