tl;dr: good vibes but would NOT recommend for stylist cuts. I got my hair cut at the New Haven location on 3/16/2026. I did a solid amount of research and saw only good things about Skull and Combs, and then spent time on Instagram looking at their stylists to see who appeared to do more women's cuts, so booked an appointment with Tawny. She was super kind & the vibes were great, I showed her my inspo pictures and explained what I liked about each - I wanted it to be shoulder length (like the pic with red hair), long layers (like the other 2 pics), no bangs but a bit of face framing was ok, and said I'm very low maintenance with my hair & like being able to put it half up frequently. She asked a clarifier (the one pic was longer in the front, she asked if I liked that and I said no, I prefer a pretty straight cut), and I felt great. After the first cut (which was WAY shorter than I thought it should be) and then over the next 30 minutes, I kept thinking it didn't seem right, but we were chatting and 1) the damage had already been done... I had parts of my hair that were shorter than chin length from that first cut and 2) I was trying to convince myself it wasn't that bad. One of the other staff commented and said "wow! Someone came in for a big chop today!" (very enthusiastically and kindly, which really was the vibe of the shop the whole time), and Tawny replied "oh no, it's not a big chop, her hair is just so thick!" (again, beyond kind, and my hair is thick, but she took ALOT of length off) and at this point I really was starting to wonder what was going on. We wrapped up, she asked how it felt and I said it felt a lot lighter than it did when I came in (7in gone:,)), I paid & tipped, and then got in my car, looked in the mirror and started looking at the inspo pics again... I've described it all to a few friends and sent them the inspo pics and my description & then what my hair looks like and all of their reactions are the same: What. The. Heck. Happened. I ended up with chin length hair, the sides aren't really even, some of the layers are 4 inches long, and have spent an hour trying to find a way to put it even partially up & out of my face and have been unsuccessful. I'm really disappointed and would not recommend coming here for a stylist cut. There was a barber cut right before me that looked great, and everyone was so kind, but I won't be coming back. Had my first cut here yesterday. The vibe is really friendly, open, and cool, with the staff laughing and having fun with each other and the customers. I didn't realize how unhappy I was with the vibe at my old barber until I stepped through the door here and felt right at home. Everybody actually enjoys being here, and that's contagious. Ethan did my cut, and he was super nice about talking it through with me before getting going, and spent time getting it exactly right, and even helping me out with styling pointers. I was happy with the cuts (if not the vibe) at my prior place, but now that I've had a chance to wash it, style it myself, and wear it for the day, it's definitely a cut above (pardon the pun) what I was getting at my prior place. Can't recommend him highly enough. Just an A+ across the board for making a new customer feel welcome, having a great environment, and giving a great haircut. Oh yeah, and it was $5 less for the cut than I was paying at my last place to boot. read more

However, I didn't know I had to pay an additional $30 for toner. I should have been asked prior to treatment. I've never paid extra for toner. Jemma is amazing! I have naturally curly silver hair that I usually heat straighten. It was dull, long and without style. I came in wanting a change- tired of the daily ponytail--maybe a long shag? I got everything I wanted and more under Jenna's expertise. Jemma gave me an amazing layered shag with Bridget Bardo type curtain bangs that I LOVE. It enhances my natural curls! Exactly what I wanted when I got my balayage done today. i often am underwhelmed when I get my hair done elsewhere, but I must say this is the most on point hair I have ever gotten after showing someone a photo of what I want done. I enjoyed sitting in the chair and had good conversation with the stylist, but I came home with a disjointed haircut. It happens, I guess. I wanted this to be my place, but no. They offered a different stylist, they tried, and they refunded my money, so that is a good attribute. Now, I will be getting my hair cut even shorter (ELSEWHERE), which isn't a choice I wanted to make just yet. So, like Jason says, it wasn't a bottom of the barrel experience. I previously gave one star, but I upped it, because he did try. Talk your cut out fully, before you begin. That's on me. Lesson learned. read more

I had been wanting to get a partial balayage for my naturally dark hair for more than a year when I found Skull & Combs. As spots tend to be booked up a few weeks in advance, I'd recommend calling or using their user-friendly website to book an appointment. The location is accessible and there is street parking available. The salon has a lot of character! The staff were warm, attentive, and professional from the moment I stepped in. Ari asked to see sample pictures I had as reference and asked some follow-up questions to get a better sense of what I was looking for. During the waiting time, team members would ask if I needed anything. I also combined getting a hair cut and Ari got the length and styling to how I liked. I'm extremely happy with the end result! I was looking for something that would look natural but still stand out in the sunlight and loved Ari's work on my hair. I'll be back for a touch up once my hair grows out a few inches. read more

I had such a lovely experience working with Ari! For years I've been wanting to go purple, and finally decided to take the plunge after a year in quarantine. Ari took the time to look at my sample pictures, asked me what I liked about them, and really got to know what I wanted. In the end, she nailed it! That said, I have every confidence that if she hadn't, she would have been very open to feedback. She was so dedicated to making sure I would be happy with the final product. She was a calming and reassuring presence throughout the experience and I look forward to continuing to work with her. The COVID protocols at the salon were also confidence-inspiring. They took everyone's temperature upon entry and provided hand sanitizer whenever needed. This review is long overdue - Val has done my hair for three years, and I have always left completely satisfied. About once a year, I schedule a "blank canvas" appointment with Val - this entails lifting my hair, which is very jet black, to white. Without fail, Val always gets me to a perfect platinum shade, which frees up a whole world of possibilities in coloring my hair. If you want this kind of treatment, just a fair warning that it takes time - but it's so worth it. That's because Val's process is not just focused on achieving aesthetic results: she also builds in time to treat the hair in a way that allows it to emerge on the other end as healthy as possible. To get hair as dark as mine to as white as she gets it takes a lot of time, but I can tell my hair definitely benefits from her approach. Lastly, Val is a great conversationalist, and the staff + atmosphere at Skull & Combs are second to none. I was very happy with my haircut by Veronica, and I'll definitely be back. I wasn't so great at explaining what I was looking for, but she was able to suggest some things and ultimately execute it awesomely! First of all, I appreciate their online appointment scheduling system. It just makes so many things easier. The salon itself is very retro and unique. Each stylist's area uses mismatched dressers and mirrors and are personalized with little touches. Classic rock was playing in the salon as well as conversation crossing the salon between stylists. But back to Veronica! She was very chill, and we had a brief, genuine conversation at times through the haircut (nothing fake or forced). Changing a haircut place is a very stressful process for me, thus I was already nervous walked in (it was my first time getting a haircut in New Haven). Reception was warm and I didn't wait long until my hairstylist/barber showed up. I did my best to explain them what kind of haircut I need both verbally and visually. The cut was OK, but given the seniority of the stylist /barber and the price I paid, I expected more neat outcome. The part which perplexed me most was that my hair was trimmed, washed, and then cut and applied product to. Essentially, I left the place with dirty hair sticking to my neck and face, itching all day until I got home in the evening to shower. The line wasn't straight and I had to go to another place to fix it and had to go even higher to fix this mistake which I didn't even want to. I stopped in at Skull & Combs yesterday, after having them recommended to me by a friend. Their location is beautiful and easily-accessible, with a distinct sense of style in their decor. When I came in, I was nervous because I had been growing my hair out for about three years. My visit to Skull & Combs was meant to change that, and cut my hair short. I brought a few reference photos for the sort of cut I was thinking of getting, and showed them to Tyler, who gave me my haircut. I am not exaggerating when I say that he gave the the BEST haircut I have EVER had. Tyler was personable, funny, engaging and meticulous. He took his time and made sure to take the vague ideas I had about what I wanted and mold them into a haircut that looks and feels fantastic on me. And from seeing the other customers and the work done by the other stylists, this is the standard of service they bring into every customer appointment. One other thing I wanted to hilight was their website, and the convenience of getting an appointment. You 100000% absolutely need to come here if you want a great hair cut that's professional, edgy, unique, and just perfect. I was hesitant to get my hair cut as I had been just crappy cutting it for 2 years and every single time I had went for a hair cut ANYWHERE ELSE, my hair would look stupid (no one knew how to cut hair that wasn't thin/easy/manageable/not belonging to a POC). HOWEVER, I am so happy that I put my trust in Jemma. Jemma was such a god damn peach and really brought my hair back to life. I have so much hair, and not only that, but it's so thick and dense and god I don't know how she did it. But in an hour, she was able to fix my bangs exactly how I want it (which is such a big thing for me), cut my hair to frame my face, shampoo, condishy, styled it, gave my hair texture and better layers, and managed to take a shit ton of hair off while still maintaining my length. It's impressive. I really didn't expect much because I can't do a lot with my hair while working in a hospital (no color, nothing crazy). But I look different, I look better.
