I went in with over a foot of hair looking for a super short and funky cut, with a few pictures to guide me. The initial stylist who worked on my hair was super pleasant and gave me a cute haircut, but not the look I had asked for. The owner, Jason, saw that it wasn't quite right and took over, even staying with me after the shop closed to get it closer to where I wanted it to be. He did an excellent job -- he is clearly passionate about his craft. When he was done it looked a lot better but I was still a bit unsure so he offered to have me come back in a few days if I wanted a bit more work on it. It wasn't quite sitting the way I wanted it to, so I booked a re-do with Christie for a few days later. She is incredibly thorough, thoughtful, and knowledgable. We made decisions together about how the style was evolving as she cut, and she gave me new insight into the properties of my hair and how it behaves. She is an artist who knows her stuff. My hair looked great when we were done, and I also felt more confident than I ever have when leaving a salon with a new style. Not only due to how it looked, but more because we worked it out together, so it really felt like my cut. Atmosphere, great. Professionalism, great. Knowledgeability, great. This place is hands down the best haircutting place I've ever been to. It is a real local gem in New Haven and the owner, Jason is amazing at what he does. He has a real vision for cutting and styling hair. He takes the time to find you the right style that works for your hair. He puts attention to every little detail of the haircut and his haircuts are reliable every time. I've never felt like I had a bad haircut from him, and I've never had a bad hair day since I started getting my hair cut by him. Shampooing is included in the haircut. I've been to a ton of different haircutting places in New York, but this is by far the best place I've been to. There are other haircutters there who also seem to be busy and talented. My friend gets his hair cut by someone else there and his hair always looks good. The environment is relaxed and comfortable and it's in a great part of town. There is a great couch to sit on with weird old books and sometimes they will offer you coffee or water. If you are anywhere near New Haven, this is the place you should get your hair cut. Update: the stylist did reach out with an apology and an offer to fix my hair. I opted to not take them up on it, but I do appreciate the attentiveness to reviews. Hair is very personal and in this case the experience cannot be mended. Had a pretty terrible experience here. During the shampoo the stylist was really rough with my head and didn't check in with me about water temp. During my cut she was also extremely rough with my hair--putting the blow dryer too close to my scalp to where it felt like it was burning, and getting my hair caught at one point. She talked to the other stylists but made no attempt to talk to me. Seemed like she was in a rush to get me out of there. Who hurt you? Did I hurt you? The cut was also pretty awful. Once I washed it there were several chunks a full inch longer than the rest of my hair. Left a good tip because people facing jobs are hard but gosh dang that was a heinous experience. I recently moved to New Haven and with a move comes the stress of finding a new barber that can care for your hair. As a queer-identifying person of color, my biggest concern when looking for a new barber and shop is that I can feel comfortable and welcome in the establishment and I definitely found that here. In regards to my haircut, I booked an appointment with Kemi and I'm very glad I did. We had a brief consult on what I usually like and he offered his insight as well. I can tell he knew exactly what he was doing and we had a great conversation. I've 100% found a new barber in him. I was so happy with the end result and vibe of the whole experience that I would definitely recommend coming here. The people are amazing and accommodating and they even give your hair a wash before getting in the chair, which I wasn't expecting. I highly recommend booking an appointment ahead of time. They do take walk-ins, but it's unpredictable to know how many people can be ahead of you if you do. read more

I came here in December for a balayage and fell in love with the results! My stylist did a great job blending and mixed up the perfect toner. I recently had my hair done elsewhere to get more of an ashy tone and to get rid of the brass that the color eventually fell to. It turned out too gray and muddy so I came back to Skull & Combs for an emergency consultation. They took me right away and washed the gray out for me. I went for your typical barber shop for most of my life. On a whim, I tried here and really haven't been anywhere else since. Even after moving away from New Haven, I thought it would be time to try some places around me down in Fairfield County. Despite searching, I couldn't find a place that had the same aesthetic, fun-environment, helpful stylists, and simple reservation system that they use. Their stylists are efficient, recognize and remember previous customers, are easy to converse with, and most of all extremely friendly and helpful if you have questions about what to do with the mess on your head. As a guy, I usually just did a gesture to a barber and I got something I didn't really care for, but didn't hate. The first time I sat down, I was asked a bunch of questions I never even considered, and that was for a simple haircut and beard trim. I've sat with multiple stylists here, and they're all great. I highly recommend Sam, but that's because she's cut my hair the most out of the lot. You really can't go wrong. read more

My panic was palpable so we made a plan: The first visit was a consult, and we agreed that going forward I would come to him for the next few months and he would fix my... situation. After that, we could play it by ear. I stuck to the plan, and over those visits, I got the best haircut I'd ever had -- every single time. He was able to repair, as fast as my hair grew, what my previous idiot of a barber had done. Ari cut my hair a few weeks ago and it was the first time anyone bothered to ask if I wanted any weight taken out and let me tell you it has made my life SO much easier and the overall shape of my hair much nicer. Today she did a beautiful balayage on me and made sure to ask all the right questions and be super thorough before getting started as well as during my service so I'd be happy with the result. She's attentive, courteous, super friendly and of course talented! Everyone else at the salon is personable and professional too. They constantly maintain a clean and tidy shop and are always on top of greeting people at the door immediately and making sure they're taken care of. read more

I found this salon, and literally stalked the calendar for a couple of weeks, trying to find an opening / last minute cancellation to get me in. I usually get a nice trim every few months, but obviously with Covid, that wasnt happening. My hair was really long, and I have been ready to chop it off and do something different. Its been many many years since Ive cut it as short as what I was looking to go for, so I knew I needed to find someone that knows what theyre doing and has some good reviews / photos to back it up. So I found Christie, saw that she was the "master" of Lobs and pixie, and she was a senior stylist. But man she was busy! Her calendar was way booked. Then I found Ari, a junior specialist. I looked at her social media and I didnt see a whole lot with Pixie cuts and being labeled a junior stylist, and me cutting my hair for the first time in a long time and cutting many many inches off, I was definitely nervous about being in the hands of a "junior stylist." But she was the only one available. so i scheduled her. then, a few days before my appointment, Christies calendar opened up. I saw it as a sign. YAY senior stylist. who I wanted initially. But honestly, nothing against her, as sweet as she is and so friendly, and how easy it was to chat with her, I was not impressed with her actual work. I guess I was under the impression that when people go to the salon, its suppose to be a day of pampering. Feel and look good. When she washed my hair, she probably spent no more than max 2 minutes to wash and condition. I love when I get my scalp scratched and hair washed, so I couldnt believe how little effort she put into it. I figured, oh maybe she does a 2nd wash like some salons do after the haircut! So I thought nothing of it and didnt say anything. And even though overall, the haircut was decent and Ive received compliments, I just was not satisfied for what I got versus what I actually wanted. She definitely cut more than I was looking to cut. There was several strands that were much much longer than the others and it was definitely not suppose to be the style of the hair. It was from probably her rushing through and carelessly finishing. So when I got home, I had to clean it up myself. She didnt put any hair products to style my hair, It was just a simple blowout and I was on my way. And, I just feel like for what I paid a "senior" stylist to do, I expected more and was disappointed. This was the first time that I was out of a salon - beginning to end - during a pandemic - cutting off 12+ inches, completely new look and style - in just 45 minutes. So, I felt like i was rushed out. And Im kinda kicking myself in the butt. Because Ari was working when I was there. And she looked so cute, with style, her hair was kinda the length I was looking for so I thought dang.. she probably could relate more (age range and vibe) and I shouldve just stuck with her. and paid half the price. In covid news though, they definitely are doing a great job with taking safe healthy steps and precautions. So, kudos to that. read more

I recently moved to New Haven and passed Skull & Combs a few times while eating at Da Legna. I originally thought it was just a Barber Shop but I was so happy to realize they are a full service shop! I was also happy to find that they allow for online booking of appointments, which makes making time for a haircut a breeze. Sam cut and colored my hair for me and it was a great experience! I've had other stylists who I've felt haven't listened to what I've asked for, but Sam nailed it! She also offered suggestions based on her experience which I really appreciated. I dye my hair blonde and I love the way she blended my color so that I won't have awful roots in between appointments. My friend got married this weekend and I got so many compliments on my hair. I've been a client of Kayla's for years and she is an absolute artist when it comes to hair. I've never been disappointed going to her, she's super sweet and always makes sure you feel comfortable.
