Hair prior to appointment, what I requested, and what I got...they said they would cut hair to match photo but instead cut a lot more than the photo-ended up being about 7 inches of hair total...then I requested hair color in photo they said it might be a little warm based on my previous hair which I said was fine...then when I saw it they could tell I didn't like it and asked if it needed to be warmer-it is not ashy at all even the part that had been untouched by previous coloring. So so disappointed and unflattering on me. I hate being seen in public with this hair that cost over $300. read more

I wanted to get my haircut today, Monday when most places are closed. I called around and found Salon J was open and decided to take my chances. Wow, did I get lucky because my stylist was Erin. I normally get my haircut in New York. I spend so much time there working but always wanted to find a place here in New Haven. I like a lot of layers and my hair is fine. If you don't know what you're doing, you can cut my hair into a frizz ball. I showed Erin some photos, told her what I liked and especially what I didn't like. She gave me a quick haircut that turned out to be the best haircut I've had in a long time. It's a tiny little shop that doesn't look like much but the only thing I care about is the cut. So I went in a few days ago and was unhappy with my hair, but I think there were a lot of things that was accidentally miscommunicated. I went in again today, and Erin fixed my hair (free of charge) and it looks absolutely amazing. The roots are blended perfectly, and my root touch up looks so perfect and it is blended seamlessly. She also gave me a free blow out, which she absolutely did not need to, but she did and my hair just looks so great! I am more than happy with it. I also did the conditioning treatment, which revitalized my dead hair. Overall, I would highly recommend Salon J and especially Erin. I have always loved her haircuts, and I'm now happy that I can confidently endorse her hair dyeing and root touch ups as well. Not the best comparison but it's all I have since I never wore my hair out due to such a bad cut I received somewhere else. But it you notice, one layer compared to the end of my hair there was a HUGE gap, that top layer was all around my hair like a bowl cut, just horrible! I did my RESEARCH and searched high and low for someone with great reviews and found Erin. She is wonderful! I am here to sing praises about Jane! She was an incredibly kind, patient, and informative stylist. I walked in with medium-longish hair with not much to it, and I asked for a jaw-length haircut with bangs (which I've never rocked before). Jane made sure I knew everything about bangs (their pitfalls, their maintenance, etc) before I fully committed. She asked for pictures of what I wanted and she captured it perfectly. She asked me every step of the way if I was ok with what she was doing and did an awesome job layering, making sure I knew how the cut was going to look when it was dry. She did a FANTASTIC job! In the past, I've usually just gone to chain barbers like Super Cuts to get my hair cut, but with a brand new hairstyle, I figured I should go to a place with a little more expertise in this area and I made the right choice. Going here is a frustrating experience for me. It's a real challenge to get the haircut that I want, even if I show the haircutter a picture of me after a past cut, ask them to replicate that, and talk frequently to ensure they do certain things right. They'll also tell me things about my hair to justify their decisions that I disagree with, and while I recognize that they are trained professionals, my hair has been on my head for much longer than it's been in their shop. After much back and forth, I walk out with a haircut that's about 70% of what I want. If I argue, I could probably get them to cut it better, but that's not really the point of a good barbershop, is it? At least the conversation's generally nice, it's a clean place, and I get a free shampoo out of it. read more

Great haircuts here -- I have long wavy hair that curls at the end and went into Salon J because I was looking to get a few inches taken off and my layers touched up. I had an appointment for 6 PM and was taken to the back within 5 minutes of my appointment time. She did a great job shampooing and listening to what I wanted. She was also patient when I asked her to take another inch off after she had started, which was super nice. The only reason I took a star off is because the prices are a tad steep ($50-$60 for a women's haircut). I'm used to paying around the same in Virginia near my parent's house, but that was for a stylist with over 20 years of experience. Overall, a great place to go for a haircut! Cannot comment on other services as I don't color my hair (not yet anyways...) Also, they have a discount for Yale students or employees at the hospital! Horrible experience, I am a natural blonde and wanted a Similar root color balayage to my natural root... my roots were BLACK! You can see the streaks from the brush!!! Near my ears were so dark! I looked terrible ! My ends were green/ grey, and my whole head was uneven and patchy. They refused to see their mistake and told me to "keep washing it , it'll fade" that doesn't help the spots everywhere. I was terrified to go back to the same salon with rude girls. After complaining I got a partial refund and went somewhere else. New hair stylist was blown away with the horrible mistake and damage from this salon. Took 2 sessions to repair. This is the best spot in New Haven to get a hair cut for women or men. Both my boyfriend and I get our haircuts from Jane. She is spectacular. I am a busy student, and she always accommodates my request for a stylish but very low maintenance hair cut. I'v also come early and seen her finishing up some fancier haircuts that looked fantastic. My boyfriend has a rather unwieldy and eccentric fro, which he is very attached to. In the past, he has always hesitated getting a hair cut because stylists usually want to change it, or just aren't sure how to deal with his request for "the same fro, just a little bit more contained." I used to pay $40 for a men's haircut--the New Haven standard! I paid less in New York! Salon J offers me a cut that's just as good (if not even more versatile and stylish) for only $17. Plus the service is super friendly, and I really enjoy the quick in-and-out without feeling pressured to buy haircare products and other services. Jenna cut my hair, and I love it. (I recommend her.) This space has gone through a lot of local salons/barber shops in the last decade or so, so it's important to support this one so that it doesn't succumb to the same fate! This is my first time here and the experience was great. I just moved to the area and looked in Yelp to find a decent place that cut men's hair. I found Salon J and got my haircut from Karla. My first impression was the place was clean; professional look; & the staff was friendly. I explained to Karla I was going for a slightly different look and she knew exactly what I was talking about and began to work in my hair. She is very personable and enjoyed conversing with her. She also knew by looking at the texture of my hair how I should manage it. They also shampoo your hair which is great cause most places these days charge you extra for this. It honestly felt as if I was at a day spa. After she textured and styled my hair....I LOVED the look! I highly recommend this place for anyone that's looking to get a great and expensive looking cut but at a very reasonable price. Scheduled a bang cutting appointment and the receptionist was really pleasant to work with. I came in and was seated quickly too. But when I sat down for my cut, the hairdresser literally grabbed my dry hair, chopped it horizontally, and then took 30 seconds to even it out before saying I was done. I felt that there was very little precision or care with the cut and my hair looks really far from what I had asked for. The bangs now are still uneven. Yes, granted, it's just a haircut for bangs but I was done in 5 minutes and was really unsatisfied with both the final look (looked nothing like my reference photos) and the quality of the haircut. I've had friends and family cut my hair during the pandemic and expected a salon experience to be more upscale than that. read more

I very much enjoyed getting my hair cut by Bella over the last 1+ year as she is very detail oriented, experienced and accommodating. The eyebrow clip added a little bit of extra care that was well appreciated. Not being much of a planner when it comes to hair cuts I enjoyed Salon J's customer service of fitting me in often the same day when I realized that my sides were slightly overlapping my ears as a sign that it must have been 5-6 weeks since the last treatment. I literally just got my hair cut and colored here an hour or so ago, and I couldn't be happier. Jenn gave me EXACTLY what I asked for-- a dramatic, asymmetrical cut that works with the idiosyncrasies of my hair's growth patterns, in exactly the right shade of dark-brown-but-not-black. Both Jenn and another stylist working today, Marisa, were super friendly and chill and nice (but not cloying/talk your ear off/regale you with horrifying stories about their personal life friendly, which I find overwhelming when I'm trying out a new stylist. This is all fine once we know each other better, though). Jenn worked fast and the price was perfect. The campus location is a plus plus plus since I'm there way more than I want to be. I will definitely go back and I am THRILLED that I (finally!!!! after two+ years in New Haven and some shopping around) have a place and person to do my hair here. I'm so upset at myself for paying full price. For starters, I have no knowledge of hair whatsoever. I wanted to do something "out of the box" (my birthday is 2 weeks away). So, I checked the reviews and trusted this was the place for me. I showed Jen the picture of what I wanted and she said "oh, that's balayage". She's the owner, so I figured she knows what she's doing, she's been doing it for 22 years, and the place has been in business for seven. Fast forward and hour or so, and I'm getting my hair washed and immediately the atmosphere changed, I had a gut feeling something was wrong, but I didn't know what because I wasn't facing a mirror, but the staff had straight faces. I immediately felt uncomfortable. Fast forward again and Jen says "you're going to let me style it right?" I told her several times my hair doesn't hold a curl, after her trying she says "wow, your hair is just too silky" the chair finally turns and I see my color and hate it. I don't have a good poker face so you can see that I'm upset. I know she doesn't like it, because she says "if you want, you can come Wednesday, and I'll dye it free of charge". So, silly me, thinking she knows it's bad and the staff also knows, I wouldn't be charged $195!!! I didn't properly look at how bad it was until I got home, I noticed the back of my hair wasn't touched! So I called and the receptionist told me "balayage isn't the entire head". I shared this experience with others and everyone I've told was baffled. Several people told me to go back, but I refuse to have my hair touched again by a salon that clearly doesn't know what they're doing. This is my lesson learned, so customer beware! I already knew she worked wonders with my guy friends, handsome fresh cuts every time... and finally went to see her myself. It's hard to find someone who knows how to take good care of color and a fun cut without feeling like you leave with a mom-do. Jane gets it. In my opinion Jane is a wizard and I don't know how I'll find someone else that compares. I usually did the same hairstyle every time but she was able to provide great recommendations and the execution was flawless. Even as it grew out it looked good. I've since moved away from New Haven but the stylists I've found so far will cut it to look good at first but when it grows out sometimes the hair sticks out at weird angles. I also had Jane bleach and then color my hair silvery gray at one point and she did a wonderful job. I've been here several times off a recommendation from a friend. I have had my hair cut here 3 times by the same woman, unfortunately her name is escaping me. I'm really bummed to say it's been a bad experience. The first time she didn't quite get the cut right. I'll put the blame on my self for not being clear. Second time it was a bit closer but still not right. The final time was today and we were back where we started. I was very clear with her today, and I know I can be a bit high maintenance about my hair. But she made it seem like what I was asking for was impossible, when other hair salons of been able to do the cut. (And it's a fairly standard cut.)
