I had such an incredible experience at Skull & Combs. The environment is both unique and welcoming-of all types of folks, which made me feel comfortable from the minute I stepped in. But being a member of the LGBTQ community, it was an affirming spot to get my hair done---my hair was highlighted with rainbow foils! I went into Skulls & Combs for a trim on fairly short hair. One length, half an inch trim. As someone who had been seeing the same stylist in CA for years, I was nervous. Rightfully so. While it looked fine when I walked out, after washing it myself, I noticed that there are chunks of hair significantly shorter or longer than others. In short hair, this is noticeable. I did not want layers put in, just an overall trim. I should have known when my hair that usually takes over an hour to cut took about half an hour that something was up. I'm disappointed in this sloppy service, as I had read such great reviews on Yelp, and disappointed that I will now have to pay someone to fix it. UPDATE! Owner Jason reached out and offered to fix my hair himself for free, which I truly appreciate. I already have an appointment set up with another person, otherwise I would take him up on this offer. It is rare to find a business that follows such positive and respectful business practices and though I already have a different appointment set up for my hair, I really respect this initiative. read more

I did not realize the level of detail a stylist goes into until they started asking me questions and going over the recommendations for my body type. AWESOME. This is a pretty relaxed place. No fancy stuff like deep conditioning or head massages before a hair cut but the price isn't too high which is great. Sam cut my hair. She was very nice and did a good job. The only thing is that she washed my hair, dried it and then cut it. The reasoning is so she can see the way it falls and it worked because my hair looks great. However I cut 4 inches off and have split ends already. I think cutting it dry might have been a bit harsh on my hair. Other than that it was a great cut just let her know if your want your hair cut when wet. read more

We have been coming to this hair salon for our boys because they love the atmosphere and the dog that chills as her (dog) owner cuts hair. I had an appointment for my youngest son set for after school. I work and have no access to my phone so I leave it in my car for no distractions. As I was leaving to get my kids I noticed a cancellation ONE hour before my appointment. I called to see what happened and the girl that answered the phone told me the schedule was not right so the person I chose to cut my sons hair wasn't available so she made the decision to cancel. She did say their was another stylist that could cut his hair but at that point I thought it was unbelievably unprofessional to cancel an appointment ONE hour before our appointment. She was rude and snotty to say the least. I didn't oblige to her offer and went to a local salon. I'm very disappointed at the lack of professionalism. read more

Just had a haircut here and can't recommend Skull & Combs enough! The atmosphere is super relaxed and comfortable, I felt welcomed the moment I arrived. Christie is AWESOME!! You can really tell the difference when your hair is in the hands of an expert, my hair looks instantly healthier and has a bounce and vibrance it hasn't had in ages! She really listened to my concerns and gave me a low-maintenance cut that still looks fantastic, and provided lots of pointers for home haircare. Plus she's just awesome to spend an hour with!! 5 stars for the haircut, the blowout, the price (so good that I tipped extra), the booking process (online), and feeling welcome- my appointment was in the evening but I never felt rushed and my stylist Christie took her time. And everyone else was really nice too! I had a haircut with Christie about 1 month ago to get my ends cut and thin my hair, which is straight and pretty smooth. I am particular about my hair, and she listened to me explain what I wanted and was patient as I showed her pictures. The night of, I felt that the length was a little shorter than I wanted but I was so happy with the style that I didn't mind- after a few days getting used to it, I was definitely happy with the length, too. This is the best haircut I have ever gotten! I will definitely go back. I also chatted with Sam for a while and if I can't book with Christie, I think Sam would also be a great stylist to book. I'm a new mom who desperately needed a haircut. Fed, diapered, and put baby down in the morning and rushed over to Skull & Combs to make it to my 11am appointment on time. I had to wait 20 minutes until I was sitting in the chair. I showed my hairstylist a picture of what I wanted and my hair to look like. I emphasized the length of hair I wanted to maintain. 1 hour and 20 minutes later, I walked out of Skull & Combs with layered hair so bad it looks choppy and hair length at least 1-2 inches shorter than what I desired. I didn't complain as the next client was delayed 40 minutes for his appointment and I had a 1pm appointment in Orange that I now had to rush to get to. I didn't give this establishment a 1 star review as I reserve 1 star reviews for places that are unsanitary (like so disgusting you don't want to step foot into the place). However, my experience, for a lack of better words SUCKED. If you don't mind wasting 20-40 minutes of your precious time and having a hairstylist ruin your long, beautiful locks, you might want to give this place a try. For those of you who care about your time and hair, I'd go for that other hair salon. read more

Quite honestly the best experience I've ever had at a salon or barbershop. The atmosphere provided at Skull & Combs made me very comfortable, as if I was in a close relative's living room amongst family and friends. I was greeted at the door with smiles and welcomes. The broad range of services offered at Skull & Combs is of the highest quality ive seen. Every single person working there seemed to have a personal rapport with the client they were working with, and all of the conversations involved laughter and smiles. An establishment is the sum of its parts and every single person who works there, with their unique, magnetic personalities, adds to the joyous ambience of what makes Skull & Combs so special. Jason gave me my favorite haircut to date. I have been wanting a change in my hairstyle for a while, but was unsure of the style or direction I should go with. The man is a master at his craft. He completely re-invented my "look" and I couldn't possibly be happier with the job he did. I was blown away with his attention to detail and the level of concentration he exhibited throughout the entire process. Made me feel secure by the way he explained every aspect of what he was doing during my haircut. The kind folks at Skull & Combs have been my go-to for haircuts and dye jobs in New Haven for the past four years. I have specific and often technically-challenging visions for my hair (including ~fashion colors~), and they're able to deliver great results every time. I've gone from long hair to a bob to a pixie and back to a bob with Skull and Combs, and they've always asked me thoughtful questions about how I envision maintaining each style. The stylists also respond really well to the information I tell them about my hair history (how it lifts, how thick it is, etc) when they bleach it. The colorists especially have an awesome attention to detail, and make sure to touch up any missed spots (which are inevitable with my hair thickness/texture, not a reflection of their skills). Jemma, Val, Ari, and Kayla have all done my hair at some point, and I would entrust anyone employed here with my next look. On top of providing great services, the atmosphere is inviting-- I appreciate that the stylists are friendly with all the clients and I love meeting the occasional shop puppy. read more

Best haircut I've ever had. Too often, customers are expected to talk like they'd taken a hairdressing course, and then barbers just snip and shave away like glassy-eyed robots. Jason, on the other hand, was a consultant and an artist; he took time to understand the look I wanted, as well as to evaluate factors like my hair volume/texture and how it naturally fell. Then, he cut "for my head", which obviously demands a measure of judgement/flair. He was friendly and polite (even while dissuading me from an idea I had), clearly took pride in his work, and had a skilful eye for detail. Good vibes, beautiful deco, and light refreshments certainly don't hurt either. Easy 5 stars, definitely returning. read more

I'm a professional woman in my mid-30s and I wanted to go from natural dark brunette (with some red hair dye in it already) to pure platinum blonde. I thought of only one person I would trust to do it, because I've been seeing her for other hair color for years--Christie G., at Skull and Combs. I can't believe she was able to make this happen, and to make it look amazing!! I have tan/olive skin and brown eyebrows and eyes, and I honestly didn't know what it was going to look like. Christie figured out the *perfect* shade. She is a total artist--somehow the ash blonde she came up with looks natural on my coloring, and doesn't make me look washed-out, or sallow at all--but, rather, younger and more lively. It's beautiful. It even has what looks like highlights. Not only that, but somehow she did it in a really healthy way--my hair hasn't turned brittle or broken off or anything! She is so devoted to her craft--she spent literally hours on this and didn't give up until it looked the way she wanted it to. I feel like a totally transformed person and I LOVE it. I had my hair done by Christie yesterday, and let me just say, she did an absolutely BEAUTIFUL job with my full balayage, and got my hair super blonde without damaging it at all! When searching for a place to really change up my look a few friends suggested Skull and Combs. I booked an appointment with their junior stylist, Arianna and I cannot begin to express what a beautiful job she did with my hair. In her write up on the website she stated how her goal is to help people feel beautiful and let me testify that she truly goes out of her way to do that! She listened carefully to my requests, took her time to really plan out and organize what she was going to do (my hair was almost to my lower back and was a MESS. I was looking for a much shorter cut with bangs) and she was extremely attentive to detail. While holding a great, personable conversation she snipped away and made sure to check in with me along the way (I was extremely anxious) to see if it was coming out the way I envisioned it. Ari went ABOVE AND BEYOND to make me feel so great walking out of the shop and carefully created beach waves to show off the incredible texture and volume she gave me. She took my very dry, dead looking hair and brought it back to life! I also have to highly recommend this establishment because there was an incredible vibe throughout the shop. I was laughing and chatting the entire time and everyone working was very friendly, down to Earth and extremely personable (you probably will leave there wishing they were all your friends).
