A few days later we did a daytime self-guided mangrove kayak and it was absolutely fabulous. we took both the sunset cruise based in a recommendation from a friend but also decided to do the…read moreisland cruise. both offered light snacks and various drinks included. the sunset cruise also had live music. both of the (we took the 4:30 island cruise) offered a chance to see the beautiful Key West sunset. if you can only do one, I'd opt for the island cruise. we went to a sand bar and got off the boat. we could kayak or paddle board around the island to see the mangroves. had to stay in the water which was warm and crystal clear as the islands are protected. saw dolphins on the way out, a manate, a very small shark and various conch and sea floor wildlife. our guide for kayaking was knowledgeable about the mangroves and wildlife. the water all around was only 1-3 feet deep and you could walk all over. it was absolutely beautiful.

The served drinks promptly and expeditiously upon boarding the sailboat. The band was lively and sounded great. We stayed on the top level of the boat and the crew walked around and refilled drinks which was so nice. We didn't have to walked down to the bar and could just enjoy the weather, the sailing and the view! Kudos to Captain Willie and his entire crew for being such a delightful group. It's exhilarating and you will get a workout. Our guide, Josh, was both fun and capable. Highly recommend if you like a thrill. Tips: Sunglasses are necessary. But not for the sun. There's an awful lot of spray and they work as goggles. Guys, if you have compression shorts (spandex) wear that instead of a bathing suit. At 45mph your bathing suit will catch the wind and ride up on you. They'll hold your bags behind the counter. Josh did take photos and texted them to us. I chose to do the all watersports activity because I've done it many years ago with sebago watersports in 2018 with my family and our group of 20 people, so I was excited to go back with all my friends for my birthday and don't get me wrong we had a great time but it did feel very sales pitchy and a little chaotic. Let's start with the good: - great lunch - staff was nice - 2 different boats for parasailing -Cannon and Rachel for parasailing were great ! - jet skii instructor (not sure of his name, very cool guy), and he showed us a stingray -captain was amazing and very personable - small group on this day due to the weather which meant not so much downtime waiting for the next thing to do- which was amazing Now let's dive a little into the not so great: - we were forced to tip before getting on the boat about $15 per person which isn't crazy, but it does suck to be told you have to tip before even getting the service - our guide, not sure of her name but she was really nice but unfortunately really unorganized, we were told to split into two different groups since our group was quite large, which we did and while one group was off parasailing or jet skiing the other was left behind to utilize the banana boat & floaties, which were cool but we kept being told we were next for parasailing and to get ready, about 2-3x, which led to us getting out of the water and waiting for the boat that would come take us to go jet skiing or parasailing, but then kept getting pushed back until we were the last group to go. Thankfully we all got to partake in the activities but I can't imagine how chaotic it would've been if the boat had been at full capacity which is around 120 people versus on that day which was 30-45. I think it would've been nice to get an exact time within a 5-10 minute time frame to know when we should get back on the boat and wait for the smaller boat, as we had to get out of the water 2-3x just to be told the boat wasn't back or that we weren't next. - our friends who went parasailing first did not have a good experience with the crew and thought they were kind of rude Overall we all had a great experience, but I do wish they made some tweaks in organization and friendliness of some of the staff.

I have only ever kayaked on lakes or very gentle rivers before, and have always enjoyed it so much. But with the high winds and convoluted terrain, this was not beginner-friendly. More disappointingly, when I asked my guide, Heather, for advice about how to stop my boat from drifting, she retorted: "Oh, so you weren't paying attention when I explained that earlier!?" I WAS paying attention, but I needed further explanation. Why should I be shamed for not understanding everything immediately? Why shouldn't I ask a clarifying question on a beginner tour? The guide seemed totally disinterested in watching how people were doing, going so fast ahead, even when other people were far back behind her. The company really needed to have a second guide in the back, or to have us divided into more/less experienced groups. I would have much rather been in a gentler group and gone a shorter distance but felt safe than to be belittled and struggling to maneuver my way. It was just such a negative vibe for something that should have been uplifting and fun. In positive news, it is really beautiful, and (as a scientist myself), I found the information about the ecology fascinating. I just would recommend a different tour to anyone who isn't very confident in their skills.
