    Yankee Freedom Dry Tortugas Ferry

    Yankee Freedom Dry Tortugas Ferry

I am a huge US National Parks fan and am trying to visit all of the US National Parks and Monuments…read moreduring my lifetime. Every time we visit Florida, I like to add another Park or Monument to my list. This time was Dry Tortugas National Park, a very unique park in that you have to book a ferry trip or board a sea plane in order to visit the park. We selected the less expensive option, the ferry, which is operated by Yankee Freedom. They offer a one day trip to Dry Tortugas for $250.00, which includes a breakfast, lunch, a guided tour of the fort, and the ferry ride to and from the island, which is 75 miles from Key West, in the Gulf of Mexico. The trip runs from 7 am - 5:30 pm. They also offer 10 spots per day for people who want to camp at Dry Tortugas. We were told that those camping spots fill up very fast. The parking for the day is in a nearby parking garage. It's pricey, so if you can get a ride there and back, that would be a less expensive option. The waiting area for the ferry is at the Yankee Freedom office. You have to show your ID in order to check in. They gave us each a number, which correlates to your number in the boarding process. The earlier you get there, the better. We were there a little after 7 am, and the waiting area was already packed. Channing, the guide, went over the boarding process and the day's itinerary. There were waivers to fill out for those borrowing snorkeling equipment. We boarded the boat and were able to find a couple of seats inside the boat. Immediately upon boarding, they had bagels and cream cheese available. Shortly after the ferry left, they opened the coffee/tea line, where you could also get a yogurt, fruit cocktail package, cereal, or oatmeal. We decided to opt into the guided tour of the fort. Channing was the tour guide. She was very excited to share the history of the fort with us and was extremely knowledgeable. I highly recommend the one hour tour of the fort. We learned so much from Channing! After the tour, we went back to the boat to eat lunch. They had Jersey Mike's sandwiches, chips, cookies, carrot and celery sticks, and beverages available. We ate on the boat and then spent the rest of the allotted time exploring the fort on our own. On the way back to Key West, they had a raffle, where you could buy raffle tickets to win merchandise, as well as a comment card raffle, where you could win another trip to Dry Tortugas by filling out the comment card. I won the comment card raffle! We have a year to use the coupon, and we will definitely be back! I'd like to do some snorkeling next time. We were so lucky to have calm seas during our trip. Be sure to bring Dramamine! We took some, just in case.

It was well worth it. The boat ride out was fine for us. The staff handed out bags and ginger ale as several people got seasick. The way back was very sporty. But again the staff did an excellent job of taking care of all the passengers.

HIGHLIGHT OF OUR TRIP! We have a 2 and 6 y/o and they cannot stop talking about it. The captain…read morestarted by asking what our goals were for the outing. We wanted to 1) see dolphins, 2) snorkel, 3) spend time at a remote sandbar, 4) anything else he recommended. We were able to accomplish all 4, and then some! We had a pod of dolphins swimming around and under our boat, which was amazing. We found a very shallow sandbar and decided to snorkel there, with our kids being young. We saw fish and found a large conch shell that our 6 y/o still talks about days later. We saw the remnants of a lighthouse in the middle of nowhere. And then ended the day watching the sun go down. Just breathtaking. Cannot recommend it enough. There were also a variety of sodas, waters, and snacks available which came in handy with little ones. A nice touch that we were glad to take advantage of while in the middle of the ocean. In summary... yes, it costs more to charter a boat, but the intimate atmosphere with just your family and friends around make it absolutely priceless. I'd pay triple the price to make these memories with my family, and not have 25 strangers in the background of each picture. Splurge once and you will know EXACTLY what I'm talking about.

Did the three hour dolphin and snorkel ride for $99/person. Originally was supposed to go earlier…read morebut they called me the day before and said the weather would be bad and asked if we could postpone it and I am glad we did because the weather was much sunnier and less windy the next day. James did a great job as our captain. It's nice you can bring your own beverages and they have some snacks on board. We drove around key west stopping at a few points, then rode out to an area to snorkel for a bit where we saw tons of sponges and some little fish, and then head back toward Key West, into the marina, and then back to where we started. Honestly, we didn't see any dolphin until we were on our way back in from snorkeling, and it honestly felt like it was just pure luck that we saw one but thank goodness we did since it was the highlight of the safari. The boat was pretty nice and comfortable. There were 6 total people including Captain James. The front is definitely the best place to see things from, so try to get a seat there if you can, even though it's not under the shaded cover part. It's like $112.36 per person after tax/fees plus there's a big sign on the boat guilt tripping you into tipping at least 20%. It's fine because James did a great job and deserved the 20% tip (although if we didn't bump into that dolphin on the way in, I would've felt a bit ripped off for the price), but basically expect to be out over $130 per person for a three hour boat ride. This can get pretty expensive, especially if you have a family, and I would've felt ripped off if we didn't see a dolphin but luckily we did so it was a cool experience that I definitely recommend when the weather is nice, winds are calm. Their website had higher prices in the description than the $99 that was actually charged so I hope they don't raise their prices because that would get kind of expensive. Especially when I was just in Miami and could rent a 13 person yacht for four hours $1300 so $100/person plus tax and tip is about the most I would be willing to pay for this experience, especially since seeing dolphins isn't guaranteed so you are basically just paying for a 3 hour boat ride.

This is a family-run business and you can feel that local, small-town pride from the moment you step on the boat. What impressed me most wasn't just the wildlife--though seeing bottle-nosed dolphins and sharks in their natural habitat was incredible--it was the professional camaraderie. Even though there are other tour companies out there, the captains are in constant communication, sharing sightings and even helping each other out with gear or debris in the water. It's rare to see that kind of collective stewardship in a competitive industry. The tour is also deeply educational. The guide did a fantastic job dispelling myths about sharks and explaining the biology of the animals (like the dermal denticles on their skin) with a level of respect that shows they aren't just using nature for a paycheck--they are actively protecting it. If you want an authentic, respectful, and insightful look at the Florida Keys' ecosystem, this tour is a must. I captured a large portion of our tour--including the sharks and dolphins--starting at the 2:26 mark in my vlog here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=og6BrVsB2QM

We did it toward the end of our stay, and the whole family agreed it was the highlight. Key West Extreme Adventures takes you out into the open ocean for an unforgettable 2-hour tour focused on shark and wildlife viewing. They use a special scent to attract sharks right up to the boat -- and it actually works! Our twins (they're 4) were totally mesmerized watching the yellow sharks feed just feet away. It was exciting, interactive, and surprisingly peaceful out on the water. The owner and staff were amazing with the kids -- super friendly, patient, and clearly passionate about what they do. Our daughter was a little disappointed not to see dolphins (you can't predict nature!), but she still absolutely loved the whole experience. Our son hasn't stopped talking about the sharks. We also spotted stingrays, turtles, and a bunch of sea birds. It felt like a totally unique way to experience the ocean -- nothing touristy or cookie-cutter about it. Just a really special, one-of-a-kind outing. If you're in Key West, especially with kids, do not miss this tour. It's something we'll all remember for a long time.
