We snacked on cheese, crackers and beer on our way out to the reef and ate subs after we snorkeled. Nick and crewmember Tony were outstanding hosts and very engaging and entertaining. Their seamless coordinated sailing expertise was displayed throughout the day and we never felt any concerns for our safety despite being quite a ways off shore. We saw numerous dolphins who swam alongside the sailboat as well as sea turtles. Once at the reef, we put on the snorkeling equipment provided. Since we already were experienced snorkelers, we had Nick skip the instruction portion of the trip and jumped right in and swam about 3 mins to the reef. It was a bright sunny day and as we swam over the reef we were greeted by numerous colorful fish. Nick provided us with a GoPro camera, so we could video as we swam and surface dove down the coral. The depth was only about 5 ft in some places, so it was easy to swim down for a close look at the fish. One day after our trip, I received an email from Nick with a YouTube link for the 3 min video he put together from the GoPro. We also loved the wonderful relaxing change of pace that the sailboat offered over the alternative speeding powerboat mode of transportation. Overall, this was a wonderful unforgettable experience. His rig is a 25 foot center console with a new engine, clean, well maintained and safe. He was set up for any kind of fishing I might have wanted to do (except flats, as he doesn't run a flats boat). He had new Penn rods and reels and he had rigs for everything from heavy duty tuna, tarpon or shark fishing to light rigs for smaller snapper in shallower water. He had a live bait well that again was stocked with bait for everything from snapper to Tuna including a bunch of goggle eyes! I wanted to fish tarpon, as I had never caught one. When we started the tide was slack so we busted way out to 200 feet of water and looked for sailfish. The sails were not having it so we dropped deep on an airplane wreck and pulled up two fat AJs. The tide back inshore was turning so we headed back for the maincourse- the tarpon. I hooked and lost a tarpon in the first 30 seconds- I kid you not! 30 seconds after he positioned the boat with the other tarpon boats and started chumming I had a fish on and lost. What can I say, it was my first time.... Not to fear! He had several rods all rigged to go so he just handed me a second Penn conventional and a hunk of bait and within 3 minutes I had another fish on. This one I landed. Holy crap Tarpon can fight. In all I landed 7! And I hooked and fought one for 20 before I lost him for a total of 9 fish that I hooked. 9 tarpon in 3-4 hours! As estimated by Captain Paul (because by Florida law you can't pull the Tarpon outta the water) the smallest was 50lbs and the biggest was 70lbs- and for sure was a in the water measured 4'8". I'm sure the one I lost was 250lbs (HA! ;-) ) My left arm was completely blown out from fighting the fish, my back was sore, my triceps ached. Clearly I need to go to the gym more often if I am going to try for that many huge fish in a matter of hours. Capt. Paul was personable, professional and runs a great operation. He was a pleasure to chat with, and had a huge knowledge of the local fishing. You could tell from the radio chatter that the other charter captains like and respect him- they all wanted to know what and where he was fishing and what he was using. He was cool with my non-fishing wife coming along for the ride and when the fishing slacked off he agreed to run her all the way back into town to drop her so she could shop and than ran me out for more adventures. A lot of charter captains would not have wanted to waste the gas for that sort of a run.

Capt Mike was recommended to us by the Westin concierge (Becki, who by the way is extremely helpful!). We were looking for a half day private boat charter for my wife and I and our 3 children (11, 8 & 3). The most important thing to us was flexibility. We wanted fishing, a private island visit and dolphin watching, but we also knew our kids would lose interest in any one activity after about 45 minutes. I'm happy to say that Capt Mike delivered all three, and then some. We met at the Westin Harbor. We first started dolphin watching... within 15 minutes, he had about 6 to 8 dolphins all around us, jumping and playing all around the boat. After 30 minutes of this, the kids started getting bored and were ready to move on. So we left for a private island excursion. On the way, he showed the kids seaweed with crabs and shrimp (they thought it was so cool to see up close), a shipwreck and wild stingrays. We then arrived at the private island and had a 45 minute walk where the kids found cool shells, pieces of coral and hermit crabs. Our next stop was to head back towards key west for a 1 hour fishing stop. During the stop, each of the three kids all caught fish and felt special for having done so. Finally, we took a 15 minute pause to watch the sunset from the boat for a full Key West experience. Capt Mike was GREAT with kids. They absolutely loved his personality, his kids-friendly jokes and the experiences. My 11-year old kept saying "This is so awesome!!" every 30 minutes or so. I would highly recommend anyone take this charter, especially if you have kids.

Even though there are other tour companies out there, the captains are in constant communication, sharing sightings and even helping each other out with gear or debris in the water. It's rare to see that kind of collective stewardship in a competitive industry. The tour is also deeply educational. The guide did a fantastic job dispelling myths about sharks and explaining the biology of the animals (like the dermal denticles on their skin) with a level of respect that shows they aren't just using nature for a paycheck--they are actively protecting it.
