My friends and I came for a weekend ski trip and decided to check out big bear since it was 5 minutes away from our place. Staff was friendly and really helped us understand the pricing and different options we had. I got the snowboard and lift tickets since I came to snowboard. Be prepared to spend a little over 100, unless you are doing tubing. The snowboard package comes with the board, helmet and boots and 8 hour time frame. Goggles don't come with it but you can purchase them in their store for $40. My advice, but your own goggles at home or online. There is an option to have an instructor teach you how to use a snowboard (for more money of course). The different trials and lever of the trails are outlines well so that you can see where you are going. There is a restaurant inside that you can go relax in after boarding for a while. There's also an infirmary right next to it In case you get hurt. PLEASE get a helmet when you get your gear. It's not required but I suggest you get it especially if you are a beginner. I fell and hit my head :( Overall this was a great experience and I loved it here. PLEASE NOTE: if you are a beginner and know for a fact that you won't be able to make it to the bottom of the mountain, ask and see if they will allow you to only buy the snowboard ticket it. When you start you are at the top of the mountain and board down. You don't need the lift ticket if you never get to the bottom.

We had an awesome time snow tubing. I would visit again to learn how to ski. If you rent a house in the area you'll receive a 20% discount.

There were a few beginner trails which were not as crowded as other mountains. Two of my kids went to the black trails and they said the trail was very short even though the difficulty level was up. The thing I did not like was that the lounge was at the top of the mountain instead of at the bottom, so basically I was unable to video or picture my kids snowboarding at all. We went on weekends and during the holiday week, but two of the lifts were not in operation. The line for the lift got a bit longer during the peak time. The group lesson seemed very crowded and the teacher / student ratio seemed high. Good to know that their tickets could be used at Big Boulder, so you could basically ski in two different mountains for the price of one ticket! The cost of the food was way over charged. I would recommend to go during weekdays if possible because it was crowded on weekends.

There is trash everywhere. Truly everywhere. Many people don't bother using the trash bins and instead leave their garbage behind for someone else to deal with. Public spaces and facilities aren't treated with much care; we saw gum, trash, and random items tossed into the gas fire pits, and people taking selfies often seemed to take priority over respecting others' personal space. We were fortunate to have rented a condo outside the resort, but the behavior we encountered at the resort itself was very similar, plus a few additional moments we could have done without, including someone blowing their nose into their bare hand and whipping it onto the floor. My family and I are doing the 50‑state challenge, and we chose Camelback Mountain as our Pennsylvania destination. Had we realized how close it was to NYC, we likely would have picked somewhere else. The mountain is beautiful, and the resort has a lot of potential, but they were out of almost everything across the property. On‑site restaurants had limited availability, and the posted hours weren't accurate. There's also very little to do outside the resort at this time of year. I'd recommend skipping the "largest general store in the country", the condition of their petting zoo alone will have you wanting to start an animal rescue.

That said, I recommend you get here as early as possible if you plan to rent equipment!! It's also very helpful to reserve your gear and lift tickets ahead of time. That will make the gear check out process a bit easier/faster. We arrived around 1pm, and stood in a ridiculously long line to get our gear... All in all, we spent a little over an hour and a half just waiting for our gear. We were pretty annoyed by this, so if you're looking to spend more time on the slopes, get here EARLY!!! Parking is free, but also very difficult to find the later you get here... So keep that in mind as well. They have lockers all over the premises to lock up your things. You'll have to pay to rent them and I believe the only option is to pay for the whole day. Regarding crowdedness... There were really long wait times at the ski lifts, which was very annoying and often frustrating. I get that they have upgraded systems that scan our lift tickets each time we ride, however it created a lot of chaos regarding the lines. I was not a fan. Also, the number of people who were just SITTING in the middle of the slopes, blocking the way was incredibly annoying and also dangerous. There were a LOT of people doing this... I get that it can be scary going down the slopes, especially if it's your first time, however MOVE TO THE SIDE if you're not planning on going anywhere. To end on a brighter note, we were surprised to discover that they offer night skiing here! So arriving later in the day didn't affect us too much as we continued skiing until after 7pm. As beginners, we only needed about 3-4 hours of ski time so it worked out great for us! Not sure if we would come back here or not, but we're definitely glad we tried it out at least once!

The rest of the day was at or nearly ski-on to the lifts, and this is on a near powder day of a holiday weekend. If I had any gripes at all it's that the food is pretty bleh, but that just makes it easier to bring a lunch without the under 20 crowd complaining. Check out Plattekill, Belleayre, Jiminy Peak, Butternut, Thunder Ridge in the area instead for more family friendly fun easy going experience. I've never been to a ski place with so many slopes filled with people stopped in place or falling all around! There seemed to be so many people skiing there who never had lessons but are still on the blue slopes. The left side of the mountain is filled with snowboarders. I was in super busy lift line with probably 95% snowboarders - mostly young young guys. First time I went there I ended up in a terrain park that had not much space on either side of the jumps. I was terrified one of the teenagers or 20 some things would go way too fast and jump on me or my kids! So many snowboarders on the mountain also means a lot of snow being pushed around the slopes so more mogul type on every slope lol. I find it a very scary crowded place for families esp with small children learning. The main lodge is far too crowded on the weekend. Think Rockefeller Plaza during the holidays. There's another lodge where you can eat also, it's at the bottom of the left side of the mountain where the terrain parks are. The one star is for the sauerkraut hotdog which was pretty good. Make sure to book the $20 parking at the front online - it's worth it! We never did it, fully booked so ended up walking crazy far with our ski gear ski boots on. We don't mind walking like that normally at most resorts, but this one is a big no. I felt done before starting skiing. For absolute beginner lessons, smallest children, this place might be OK. And there's a place to sit outside if it's not too cold out that overlooks the learning area where you can get drinks and sometimes there's a DJ. The staff at the lift chairs were excellent though. They seemed to be watching carefully and helping more than other area resorts!

This isn't your personal freaking dining room. -One kid (12 years old?) mouthed off to a staff member (30's?) who responded to the kid "how would you like it if I punched you in the eye". In the Catskills, I've skied Hunter, Windham and Bellearye, each multiple times. Plattekill is the smallest among them, but surprisingly has a 1100 ft vertical drop with skiable 110 acres. The main lift is only a conventional triple chair, so it can't handle a lot of people. The only other chairlift open is the adjacent double chair. It had been fairly cold early in the ski season, so they were able to make a fair amount of snow and had more than half their trails open after Christmas. The drive up is longer than going to the other 3, about 20 min further than Belleayre, which for us was over 3 hrs from NYC. The parking lot was not too crowded when we arrived around 9:30. Even though we did not park far, the hike to the lodge was steeper than I realized and even the area around the lifts were kind of steep and treacherous while carrying gear and hiking in clunky ski boots. My days of racing down the black diamonds are long over. These days, I just like to cruise down the green and blue trails. My favorite trail (and aptly named) has to be Shredded Mozzarella, a blue intermediate trail with undulating terrain and mostly groomed snow. My son really liked the blue trails here. The lodge is very crowded with most families squatting on the tables with their gear. We broke for lunch and were able to find an unoccupied table after a while. The food is typical ski lodge fare of chicken fingers, burgers, hot dogs & fries. I did get some hot chicken noodle soup though.
