"Frontier Cellars" - Is they a small retail shop selling other people's wines? What is it? We were curious. Well, someone had to be first and we were totally game. So we checked out their hours and I added a reminder it to my Outlook calendar. I am so glad I did! At first my wife was like... are we heading to the right place? We turned onto a gravel road. And if it felt like we were entering a working ranch, that could perhaps be because it is also a working ranch. But this made it the ideal setting to taste Texas wines! We were delighted to discover that they do, in fact, make their own wines. And they know what they're doing. Our favorite of their wines was produced and bottled in Hye, TX (near Fredericksburg). And they will be planting a vineyard here in Smithville, too :-) We tasted all five if their wines. Two roses, a white, a Sangiovese, and a Cab/Malbec blend. They have a great curated flight option for a great price. We also ordered two glasses of their "Big Red." And that was so good, we ordered a bottle to take with us and we joined their newsletter. We'll come back to sip wine, enjoy the view and listed to some live music. They have foods to snack on, too. We had the charcuterie. It was very nice. The meats were nice, the crackers were amazing, we enjoyed the cheese (especially the high-end parmesan) and there were great condiments including some delightful pickled Peruvian peppers. It's Sunday, (liquor stores are closed) we were attending the Lickskillet celebration. My husband pulls his truck and flatbed trailer (had finished pulling a float in the celebration parade) in the parking area of the liquor store closes to the highway. It was announced, over the band's microphone for the owner of the "truck and trailer" to move their vehicle. No problem, it's ours and I was not sure where my husband was. We were waiting to load the 7 bales of hay we had just purchased in the Lickskillet celebration auction! The owner of the liquor store was asked "when do you want it moved"? His reply in a very hostile manner, in front of maybe 25 folks in attendance of the celebration, was "RIGHT NOW"! The owner of the liquor store told my husband, as they became in contact, "get off my property, NOW"! There were words, apparently, I was as not there but can imagine, judging by the owner's demeanor that ended in FUCK YOU MAN! Appears we really inconvenienced this liquor store owner, on a small town Safternoon!!!! We will no longer do business with this establishment and encourage all others to go to the next town to buy your liquor!!

The club along with friends from Dallas and San Antonio headed east after the Texas Independence Day Parade. Libation education started at Derelict Airship AKA Violet Crown Spirits just west of Bastrop. You've hear of strip mall chic? Think business park chic! Quite similar to my friends over at Desert Door in Driftwood. Matt was an excellent host explaining the history behind each of their offerings. Let's start with Absinthe. Banned for many years in the US and parts of Europe, small batch distilleries have been popping up in the US since 2007. The anise flavor is quite strong and it's recommended you cut it with water. I've heard sugar cubes are common as well. Other in house offerings include an Elderflower and Jasmine Liqueur. Girlfriend and I's personal favorite was the Jasmine and we took home a bottle to pair up with other local spirits. A top notch experience from start to finish.
