The club along with friends from Dallas and San Antonio headed east after the Texas Independence Day Parade. Libation education started at Derelict Airship AKA Violet Crown Spirits just west of Bastrop. You've hear of strip mall chic? Think business park chic! Quite similar to my friends over at Desert Door in Driftwood. Matt was an excellent host explaining the history behind each of their offerings. Let's start with Absinthe. Banned for many years in the US and parts of Europe, small batch distilleries have been popping up in the US since 2007. The anise flavor is quite strong and it's recommended you cut it with water. I've heard sugar cubes are common as well. Other in house offerings include an Elderflower and Jasmine Liqueur. Girlfriend and I's personal favorite was the Jasmine and we took home a bottle to pair up with other local spirits. A top notch experience from start to finish. This is in the downtown area and it was a nice stroll from where we parked. We saw on Yelp that this place had a very good overall score average so we definitely made a point to get there. And it most certainly did not disappoint in the slightest. I got the Texas Honey Mule which has honeyed whiskey, lime juice and ginger beer. It was so, so good. I do love Moscow Mules anyway but the fact that they had a small menu of different ones was great to see! This drink Steve and I shared and we both enjoyed it immensely. The atmosphere is really cool with the exposed brick walls, decor and the distilling tanks. All of that and the drink had Copper Shot Distillery slide in easily with another five star review.

For my beer choice I got a Cream Ale named 1845 SBC Premium Ale. This was a solid cream ale. Not as sweet as some that I have come across but refreshing and pleasant all the same. I felt like this beer truly hit the spot! It was sweet but also crisp and clean too as we were adjusting to the Texas heat. We tried a few other beers that were in the area as well or from Texas, guest taps. As I said we were hungry and we decided to get a pizza. I don't remeber really the exact name of it but it was a combination type that had peppers, mushrooms, tomato and sausage. We also split a beef sandwich. We were very hungry! But we left very satisfied and Smithville Brewing proved to be a good stop!

The main reason we came was for the chicken wings, and unfortunately, those were a bit disappointing and left us wanting more. However, the owner personally came over to apologize and explained that those were not the wings they normally serve. He even comped us $10 in cash, which was a very appreciated and classy gesture. The staff was friendly throughout our visit, and because of how the situation was handled, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and plan to come back again to let them redeem themselves.

"Frontier Cellars" - Is they a small retail shop selling other people's wines? What is it? We were curious. Well, someone had to be first and we were totally game. So we checked out their hours and I added a reminder it to my Outlook calendar. I am so glad I did! At first my wife was like... are we heading to the right place? We turned onto a gravel road. And if it felt like we were entering a working ranch, that could perhaps be because it is also a working ranch. But this made it the ideal setting to taste Texas wines! We were delighted to discover that they do, in fact, make their own wines. And they know what they're doing. Our favorite of their wines was produced and bottled in Hye, TX (near Fredericksburg). And they will be planting a vineyard here in Smithville, too :-) We tasted all five if their wines. Two roses, a white, a Sangiovese, and a Cab/Malbec blend. They have a great curated flight option for a great price. We also ordered two glasses of their "Big Red." And that was so good, we ordered a bottle to take with us and we joined their newsletter. We'll come back to sip wine, enjoy the view and listed to some live music. They have foods to snack on, too. We had the charcuterie. It was very nice. The meats were nice, the crackers were amazing, we enjoyed the cheese (especially the high-end parmesan) and there were great condiments including some delightful pickled Peruvian peppers. The small facility, unmarked, is located in a very industrial area of S. Austin, with just enough room for crafting small batches of gin. I love being around people who are knowledgeable and passionate about their craft and Charles, our guide and one of the owners, exudes it. Maybe it's the gin he's pumping into me, but I found Charles to be the kind of person you want to be friends with, smart and charismatic. Although the location does not have central air, they do have a portable air conditioning unit in the tasting area so it was quite pleasant, even on a hot summer afternoon. The tour is about 1 hour, and in that 1 hour, we got educated in the process, quizzed on our ability to identify some of the aromatics used to make the gin, asked questions, had a cocktail and three tastings, while never feeling rushed. Their gin is different, less heavy on juniper. I'm in love with the complexity of the Navy gin and look forward to creating a few cocktails with it. They are also doing an oaked sipping gin. While you are there, pick up a couple of bottles for below retail.

The cocktail he made us was delicious. It was just enjoyable, pretty laid back tour. We all end up buying a bottle or two each. I would suggest maybe doing an earlier tour so you can experience everything. He was nice enough to stay open for us to do a later tour but we missed a few things that would have been nice to experience. But definitely well worth it.
