I have gotten used to the ubiquitous English gastro pub and at first though (when seeing the exterior) that it was one of those. Though at heart is a gastro-pub, but the food was quite delicious, and the staff were very attentive. I had the chicken & chorizo pie with mash and a bare sprinkling of greens (I think it was cabbage, wasn't quite sure). The pie was quite scrumptious, and I was pleasantly surprised that it was a whole pie (top & bottom) and not the bog standard - pie dish with a flaky pastry topping. Husband had one of the specials - a mackerel salad, which he quite enjoyed as well. We both had a dessert - him a sorbet, myself a brownie. The brownie was a bit dry - a tad overbaked. The ambience was quite pleasant, comfortable and airy. The seating was very plush with good spacing between tables. There was also a back garden/patio area - unfortunately on a very warm day it was full, so couldn't get seating out there. But, because the establishment is quite airy and there is good air circulation we were not stifling. I would highly recommend the place - the beer my husband had was a local - Hogs Back Hopping Hog. Very delighted with this, and was recommended by our waitress. The staff were quite knowledgeable, discreet, and pleasant.

The food is good, I've eaten in the bar several times and in pub grub terms it's excellent. Never used the restaurant but I hear it's good. The beer is well kept and a good if modest choice of real ales is available. The old public bar is a bit yuppie, cliquey but then it always was. Unfortunately you have to brave the woollies to make it to the gents but hey I've seen MUCH worse. Deserves at least three stars so I've given it four although I think most pubs here are grossly over rated and this is not a four star pub by any means. :-)

No fancy food, in fact no food at all at lunchtime bar a few basic rolls. But that all changed when the long standing landlord hung up his bottleopeners and the pub passed into the hands of some would-be restauranteurs. I guess you would call the place a gastro-pub with a chic extension to provide a bigger seating area. The food selection is typically gastro with prices to match. That's a shame as it prices out most of the old customers who just enjoyed their pints with the occasional bar meal. I found the place almost unwelcoming if I'm honest. Also gone is the famous Sandrock Beer Festival an event which has been replaced by the nearby Bat and Ball Beer Festival. In fact The Bat and Ball, literally only 200 yards away, still provides the more laid back environment even though it's food can be pricey at times too.

All this at the edge of the stunning Surrey & West Sussex countryside border. The menu at The Swan is a superb array of classic dishes; choosing what I wanted was nearly impossible! After a lengthy period of deliberation I left my final decision-making moment until the waitress arrived to take our order (I needed the pressure). I opted for the beef carpaccio, rocket salad, shaved parmesan and truffle oil. The key to a dish like this is the quality of the meat. Full of intense beef flavour, and literally melt in your mouth, it was clearly from great stock. The fresh peppery rocket, salty parmesan and the rich truffle oil (of which there was the perfect amount) all complemented the meat perfectly. For my main course, I had initially decided on the calves liver but made a last-minute change to the pan seared scallops, potato roti, black pudding, pea puree and a chive beurre blanc. It was the right decision. The scallops were light, delicate and cooked to perfection. The black pudding spicy and earthy. The potato roti, crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy in the middle, and full of flavour. The chive beurre blanc also added a delicious richness to the dish. The only small criticism of the dish is that the pea puree was slightly lost amongst all the other punchy flavours, but when tasted on its own is was beautifully smooth and seasoned well. After 20 years running one of London's 'best kept secrets' - The Swag and Tails pub in Knightsbridge - the owners decided to create a cosy and luxurious pub in the beautiful Surrey Hills, and with recommendations in the Harden's and Michelin guides it seems as though they are doing something right. Fresh local ingredients, tasty classic food, in a wonderful setting. This is pub dining of the highest order.

The drink selection isn't bad at all for a small pub and the staff were lovely and friendly. The food is delicious although a little pricier than one may expect for a little pub although it was much further south than I'm accustomed too. The room we had was a good size. Nice sofa and seating area as you enter followed by a good size bedroom with a super king size bed. The bathroom was also a good size with double sink. The only downside was the shower was in the bath. But at least there was a bath. It was very clean from the sheets to the loo! It overlooked the road but was relatively quiet. There is a good size car park opposite and a secret style beer garden to the rear. The staff looked after us all weekend like regulars. If you ever in the area I would recommend a little weekend stay here.
