From 38lbs to 32lbs in just ten days!
Jennifer R.

Unfortunately, we had a HORRIFIC experience with our 15 day board and train at this SMS location. For starters, we were lied to by the owner, Colby. When we first met with him (one week prior to our dogs training), he told us that he would be the one training our dog due to her high energy level. When we arrived to drop her off, the girl in the office informed us that he had just left for a week long vacation! Although we were upset, we followed through with our reservation and left our dog. On Day 2 we were told that she wasn't eating well and that concerned me. I checked on her daily to make sure she was eating ok and comfortable. They assured me she was eating all her food and doing well. On Day 4 I was told they had to move her from the larger kennel to a smaller crate due to her level of anxiety. I was quite concerned about this & asked that her trainer, Mikayla, keep an eye on her and keep me informed. We went out of state to visit family for the week with hopes that the time would fly by, so I was unable to go visit her. Every time I checked in with her trainer to see how she was progressing, her response was "she's doing good and is very smart"....that's it! When you are paying thousands of dollars for training, wouldn't you like to know what she is excelling in and what she needs help with?? On Day 10 we were driving home from visiting our family and called to check on Roxie. As we were hanging up, her trainer said "oh...one last thing....Roxie looks like she has lost weight". I was like, how much weight are we talking?? She weighed her while I was on the phone (32lbs!!!!) She weighed 38lbs when I dropped her off. I was irate and told her I would be there shortly to pick her up and she would not be completing the 15 day board and train! When we arrived, the office administrator took us in a room and was very kind. She refunded our money immediately and apologized. The following morning, we took her to our vet (our vet's recommendation) and she was sadly in worse shape than we thought. Not only did she lose 20% of her bodyweight, she was also diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (probably kennel cough), red and inflamed paws (from chewing I feel certain), broken toenails at the quick (and bleeding) and hair loss. We feel that she was seriously neglected by the staff and our poor dog suffered as a result. We were also told by the owner (Colby) that he may need to double shock collar our dog (FYI). And, don't be fooled by the "watch your dog on the live web cam" advertisement on their site because they never set them up! (Now I see why).

Ask the Community - Sit Means Sit Dog Training

Do they use shocks as a training tool?

Yes , but you must understand that it's not about punishment. It's about attention. Once you and your dog have an understanding of the training method, the transition is nothing short of amazing. I am happy and so is my dog 🐶 😊

Ryan gave us great advice and provided the "why" behind a lot of the dog behaviors we are seeing as well as specific steps we could take. He even gave us advice on helping our anxious border collie during thunderstorms which wasn't even on our list of things to tackle. We were able to implement his tactics within 5 minutes of getting off the Zoom call. We definitely recommend Ryan's services!

We were able to get general information regarding dog behavior as well as specifics regarding what motivates our dog, what triggers our dog, and how to re align our dogs behavior so that he is happy and we are happy!! I appreciated Ryan's use of video to clearly illustrate behavior. His teaching style is clear and effective. He also helped with suggestions about training tools. His approach avoids the use of gimmicks and focuses on what dogs do naturally and how we can tailor what we do to cultivate the best relationship between us. We are already seeing changes in our dog based on the initial recommendations from Born to Lead and we plan to continue to work with Ryan as we help our dog and our family. Thanks Born to Lead!

Love that they don't hesitate to call with questions to make sure they have his needs straight. Meds at night? With food? etc. Truly appreciate these gals for all they have done for my pup. You can tell they truly care about the animals coming in. The reason I even went in is because I saw SO many dogs coming out with the most professional looking "teddy bear" cuts I'd seen around ! But I wanted to talk to someone because one of my dogs was in diapers and I wanted to make sure she was taken care of, so I went in. The person at the desk said it would be fine, they had lots of experience and they would send pics everyday. So I left thinking they would be well taken care of, especially after reading the great reviews. After the first day when I hadn't received pictures, I called to see if they were ok and if I could get pics. I was assured they were fine and they sent pics. The next day, nothing. I had to call everyday to see if my dogs were ok. I didn't get pictures everyday like I was promised. When I did get pictures the one time I asked why my dogs were together, in a small enclosed space, with no other dogs. I had asked that my one dog get to go out and play with other dogs, but they didn't do that. They said they wanted to keep them together, although I had explained that my older dog in diapers wouldn't have cared. I began questioning whether anything I asked had been done. We paid over $1,000 for a week and don't feel that the service we received was worth it. There are lots of great reviews here but we can't add to them.
