Despite the fact that I have patronized Sisters (primarily Elaine) for 30 years, I cannot in good consciousness continue to promote a business when an owner has no qualms about expressing harshly offensive political views during a service. I expect that a professional would display more regard for their clientele and their business. Elaine is unconcerned about how her views may be perceived by her customers, and obviously does not care. .. I do not go to an aesthetician to have extreme personal views shoved down my throat in the midst of a Brazilian wax. Nor do I want to be drawn in to defending my position. Look, I don't do this very often. Admittedly I used to come here more often before got married, but you know how it is. It just seems like $150 a month is a lot to spend on a perpetually baby-smooth cootch, y'know? But on that special occasion it's nice to know where to go to get it done quickly, completely and right. Not painlessly. NEVER painlessly. There is just NO WAY that ripping the hair from the follicles of the most intimate an sensitive place on ones body ain't gonna hurt. Sorry. That's just the way it is. But these ladies are quick and efficient. Normally in any salon-type experience I don't appreciate idle chit chat. But not here. And they're really good at it...and I'm grateful. Any little thing to help distract me from the fact that that I'm having the hair ripped from the follicles in the most intimate and sensitive place on my body by a total stranger (actually, I don't think I'd ever dream of subjecting anyone I actually KNOW to such a task). The most uncomfortable part is when they tweeze any individual strays that didn't take to the wax. Or is it when they tell me to turn over... Jeez...at least they know what they're doing! read more

Part of me was really impressed with Sister's and part of me was not impressed at all. The pros + Yvonne is fantastic at an almost painless brazilian. That is a marketable skill I'll gladly pay $55 for (*if* it lasts and I don't have in grown hairs after. Please see "cons") + Making an appointment is effortless and they are usually available last minute. +Very clean and well kept salon. The cons -Anyone other than Yvonne is not fantastic at an almost painless brazilian! The other two ladies I've been to at Sister's were horrible. -A painless wax isn't as important as a good wax that lasts and doesn't leave you with a bunch of ingrown hairs. Happened every time with Sister's -Only takes cash or checks. Seriously?! C'mon. Sister's isn't bad, but it's definitely not as great as I expected from the other reviews. Maybe if it's the only place you've ever gone for a bikini wax, I guess you could be happy about the painless experience and think the ingrown hairs or regrowth were just your skin/hair. read more

Here's the big tip from a Scotch-German yeti: the Sisters have appointments, but they'll also accommodate walk-ins. If they're fully booked you wait a little bit, but you pay the same amount as a scheduled client. I was the third walk-in in line on a Friday night and I was waxed within 30 minutes. THIS.IS.INVALUABLE.INFORMATION - Write it down!. One day, you'll thank me - and the Sisters - for accommodating you, unannounced, in your time of need. Tip number two: Don't get waxed between the time that you start your ovulation and the end of your period unless you've got a script for Vicodin. Just don't. I'm not trying to encourage prescription drug abuse. I'm just saying. The week after your period is the week for waxing. If you wax at any other time, you are asking for pure, unadulterated torture! The Sisters were my first experience with brazilian waxing, and they make the experience easy. Their waxes last much longer than most other salons and they're very fast and efficient. I've strayed a couple times for a few different reasons, but at the end of the day I think they're one of the most dependable and best value waxing salons. If you consider pain vs. experience vs. how long the wax lasts, I'd put Sister's at the top of the list. (Daniella at Daniella's Skin Care is very fast and efficient too - she's also a little less pricey, but she's a one woman show and harder to book with. Absolutely NO fault of her own. In my experience, the wax didn't last quite as long with her, but she's a bit less expensive so that might even out in the wash) After a couple different appointments with four different waxers, I think I'm shuffling Evonne to the top of the list. She's always in a good mood and I actually think she's the quickest. Plus, she seems to be about $15 less than either of the sisters and every bit as good. I've noticed she goes after stray hairs and waxes a bit more territory than the rest of them. Up until this past visit I'd only had brazilians, but after having a horrible breakout experience with my first lip and chin wax elsewhere, I asked Evonne do it: I went from a week and a half worth of whiteheads (from visiting Sonia Salon) to ZERO problems with Sisters. Sure, it cost me double at Sisters ($30 for lip and chin), but I'll pay that for a weeks' less embarrassment. read more

I'm a little torn between 3 and 4 stars, because I'm a cheapskate. This is the only place I've ever gotten waxed and I'm happy there, just wish they charged less. All the women who work there are professional, quick and make you feel surprisingly at ease while they're up in your bidness. There's always about two of three tugs that cause me to curse and/or jump but all in all the ladies there do great, efficient work. And it's true that if you go regularly (every month) it gets less and less painful. At this point, the most painful part of the process for me is paying. $55 (pre-tip) is my standard monthly price. That rivals what I pay for a hair cut, which I only get about 4 or 5 times a year. Also, considering how much they charge, they really should accept credit cards, which they don't. read more

Rita seemed very knowledgeable and friendly. She clearly knew what she was doing as she was super efficient. I did have two minor complaints...cash only and cell phone talkers in the waiting area. Terrible communication with future clients. The first time I went to Sister's, I was scheduled for an eyebrow wax. When I went into the room, she began to ask me about my skin care regime and what procedures I have had recently. I advised her that I had a chemical peel nearly two weeks ago and she refused to do my eyebrows. Although I was a little disappointed, I trusted her word and scheduled an appointment for the next week for my eyebrows and a bikini wax. When I finally arrived for my appointment, I again went in the room to speak with the esthetician. It had been about a week and a half since I did anything with the bikini area and she refused to wax because it had not been two weeks exactly. She wouldn't even bother checking to see if there was anything she could do to help. I feel like this could have easily been prevented if the secretary was providing this information to the me before I wasted time getting away from work to go to the salon and just be turned away. Most people don't have time to waste to go to an appointment and just be turned away. As soon as I left the appointment, I found another highly recommended esthetician at Daniella's Skin Care right down the street. I gave her a call, explained my situation, and she told me to come over to her office to see what she could do for me. Turns out, she had NO problem doing the waxing. She creates her own all natural wax and the process was totally painless. I appreciated the fact that she actually took the time to see how she could help me out instead of telling me there was nothing she could do for me and wasting my time (just like Sister's did). I would definitely not recommend Sister's to anyone, totally unprofessional. There are WAY better places out there and I am happy I found a new salon that values my patronage. read more

I have been going to Sisters since they opened. In fact, I have been seeing Elaine at Sisters since 1995 when she worked at Marshall Field's. She is the quickest wax in the city. You are literally in and out in no time. I recommend taking an ibuprofin before you go if you are very sensitive. I love these waxes but be prepared to listen to Elaine's rants about religion, politics and the way people raise their children. read more

I must confess that it has been ages since I went to Sisters, and I went here before I knew about hard wax. This review is more of a strip wax vs. stripless hard wax review... Sisters used traditional strip wax for my bikini. Ouchie ouch! Ladies, it doesn't have to be like that - go to a salon that uses hard wax! ... but at the time, I didn't know about hard wax, so I thought, despite the pain, the woman did a good job on the hair removal. Traditional strip wax takes a lot longer, involves a lot more applications and removals because it covers such a small area at a time, hurts like a mother, and it really doesn't last as long. Hard wax is applied to larger areas at a time and is relatively painless. After experiencing hard wax, I just don't understand why any salon would still use strip wax for a bikini! What I did not like about this place was that it feels like a doctor's office, especially with its tiny waiting room and doctor's office feeling waxing rooms. A bikini wax is awkward enough - spruce up the experience with a relaxing environment! read more

Four and a half stars! I've had bikini waxes before, but never a Brazilian, never so quickly, and never so well! I had Yvonne. She made me feel absolutely comfortable, minimized my pain and discomfort at my first Brazilian. A Brazilian is obviously going to have to hurt and be awkward, no dancing around that, but Yvonne made me feel better by giving that air of "nothing I haven't seen before" while still being cheerful. I really appreciated, most of all, her efforts to destroy the ingrown hair that has been bugging me for weeks and her plucking of short strays. Most people don't want to have to do more than what they're paid to do down there, but she did. She cared about how the end result looked. But it didn't mean I stayed for fourty minutes. I literally walked in at 2.05 and left, fully paid, by 2.30. Amazing! Yvonne was my first waxer to give me after-care tips, and even though I elected not to buy the ingrown-hair fighting product, she didn't nag and suggested other creams that I could pick up at my local Walgreen's. Thanks! I felt comfortable, totally sexy afterwards, and it was so easy I don't think there's any reason NOT to keep this up. The minus half star is for the receptionist, who was a little cold and told me when came in to "go get ready in the room behind" her. I know that their approach is all business, but I didn't really know what "getting ready" entailed since it was my first time there (disposable undies? all off? wrap? eh?). I started coming to Sister's probably about 6-7 years ago when I worked nearby. They are fast, they do good work, and the prices are reasonable. Then I changed jobs and started going elsewhere. And several years later, I've found my way back to Sister's, because apparently no one in this damn city knows how to wax anymore (or if they do they're super cocky about it). Yvonne is awesome. Fun to talk to, quick with the wax, and everything is relatively painless. She finally got my brows looking decent, though I must admit I liked them more about a week after I saw her. Other staff members I've encountered are also nice, though on a recent visit they had 2 receptionists - one was nice and friendly and the other one just kept her head down and didn't say a word. Weird. The nice receptionist took initiative when my original esthetician was running late and got me in with someone else. I do love initiative! *Cash only!! They take checks too, but who writes those anymore? *Access to their suite can be done by going around to the back of Water Tower and using the entrance back there. The elevators will take you straight to their floor, and then just follow the signs. read more

Seek out Frances. She will rip your hair out. ... in a good way. First off, do NOT go up into the Water Tower mall looking for this place. You have to go into the rear entrance, and then wander through a maze of hallways and older kept women who've been coming here for years and basically either live in the Hancock Tower or Gold Coast. Not that I'm making fun of these old-monied types, but I have to mention them and their slow moving ways because they add to the experience here in a way. Uhh plus they won't ever read this. So yeah, once you actually find this little hole in the way, albeit a clean hole, you are ushered into an even smaller space and taken care of in a very military-style fashion. What is done is DONE here and done very well and efficiently. And that's what you look for in this type of place. read more

So, I'd never had a brazilian done before (or any waxing in the nether regions, for that matter), but two of my good friends had been raving about Sisters for a while, so I figured I'd throw caution to the wind and check it out! I called around 2:30 on a Thursday and was set up with 4 p.m. appointment that same day (woo!!). Evonne was wonderfully friendly and easygoing, which really helped to put me at ease, since I was a complete nervous wreck. Obviously, a brazilian is going to hurt. There's just no way that it wouldn't. Evonne coached me through the whole thing (i.e. warning me when something was going to hurt particularly badly), and the wax really, really wasn't that bad. She worked very fast; I was in and out in twenty minutes. $65 is a bit steep for this college student, but I think that the professionalism, speed, and cleanliness (!!!) of Sisters made it well worth it. read more

I'd really lik to give them three and a half. After my awful experience at Bliss (see my review) I learned a lesson about the uselessness of good marketing, and decided to try this place despite the fact it didn't even seem to have a professonal website. Plus, everyone is always raving about them. All in all, I would say this place is a safe bet. It feels more like a doctor's office than a spa - I feel like I'm getting professional service from people who know what they're doing. Though it's definitely on the high end of prices, if the occasion comes up that I'd rather just spend a little extra money to guarantee nothing will be messed up, this will be my place. So, pros: Professional, quick, detailed. Didn't push any nonsense products on me, even when I complained about ingrown hairs. Gave me good advice on how to improve my skin cheaply and a home, which has so far worked (my waxer told me not to use scrubs to exfoliate, since they often have moisturizers which clog pores and can cause acne or ingrown hairs. That was something I never knew. I cut out the sweet smelling expensive scrubs, and my ingrowns improved.) Cons: Decor is plain and sterile and clinical feeling. There's no ambiance. I don't like to dismiss places without trying a place twice so I went back for a second time... ugh, they made me bleed in a place that shouldn't have been touched. Ain't no shame in Sister's Salon's game. And for that matter, you better not bring any yourself if you're headed there for a waxing treatment of your nether regions. Sister's Salon does it right, does it fast, and does it with minimal embarrassment. Sure, there was a moment of awkwardness when she told me to "get ready" and I stood there in the room with no pants on as we began a conversation and ignored the fact that I was half-naked. But no worries. Yvonne was all business with my lady business. I popped 4 Ibuprofen beforehand to minimize the pain, and while the waxing wasn't as bad as I remembered, I still broke out into a sweat and laughed a little too loudly at her funny, but not THAT funny jokes. Apparently when I'm nervous I have problems controlling the volume of my voice. After 10 minutes of having hot wax in places where hot wax dare not venture, I was all finished and with fantastic results. Things to note: -they only take cash and personal check -this place isn't a luxurious spa. It's sterile like a doctor's office, so look elsewhere if you want pampering -their style is "fast and furious" (but accurate). So it shouldn't take longer than 10-15 min -you might have to flip over on your stomach and get waxed where the sun don't shine. -Yes, it's pricey. But c'mon, it's waxing in a very intimate area. Wouldn't you rather pay a little more and have a guarantee that it's done right? -Yvonne is awesome. Ask for her. read more

First ever Brazilian wax. Yvonne put me immediately at ease and the process was fantastic throughout the entire procedure. After all of the horror stories I'd been told, I was surprised at how tolerable it was. I used to go here a lot where they deterred me from getting hard wax. Turns out, hard wax was much better for my skin. I was also sad to know I was overcharged compared to others that went here. Not sure why I was continually charged $10 more every visit. I prefer the cleanliness and how quickly I am done at other salons. read more

I received my first bikini wax ever from Jackie. This place came highly recommended by a friend who regularly goes there. Jackie was quick and efficient, and she did a great job of creating a soothing atmosphere, considering it was my first time. Overall, while it there was some mild (and expected) discomfort, the experience was far less painful than I'd imagined. I'll be returning, for sure! I have tried as many salons for waxing as I have tried dry cleaners (I have no shame) in search of a more convenient location...but I end up back here every time. I have been a client here for over 6 years now! All of the ladies do a great job and it does not matter who you get. They are all very sweet and funny ladies....but it is all business...but that is what it should be. I have gone to a number of waxers for varying levels of bikini/brazilian waxes and Sisters is quick and efficient. I go to Elaine and she is very chatty, but that actually takes your mind away from spreading your business for her. The waxes last a long time. It's been 5 weeks and I still wonder if I should go in this week or next. They do a simple flip over for the more thorough wax and no "on all fours" or "knees to shoulders" so it feels less exposed, even it if isn't. It is clinical. I don't want to be there a long time, so that is less of a problem for me. read more

A small, sterile location. No ambience to speak of but the staff is quite friendly. Waxing services were pretty good - got my legs and underarms done in a jiffy. The aesthetician who gave my sister and me our facials was rather brutal on my sister but did listen to my needs and was quite gentle with me. I live in the far west suburbs so I have been in the search of many wax jobs to save me from the drive. I have never found anybody who does a wax like the girls at Sisters Salon. I was thrilled when they opened up the Skokie location which saved me driving into the city. Great place for a not so great experience. Holy smokes, I screamed curses like I had torrets, being my 1st time and not knowing exactly what to expect. Shit hurts. But, with that being said, I ed the finished product! I had Yvonne and she's super cool and did a good job trying to minimize the pain by pulling fast and pressing. It's a love-hate experience. With that being said, experience is important and this place has it. You don't want some newbie who has little experience waxing you. Yvonne has over 10 years experience and her Mom also does this. THEY DOUBLE DIP THE STICK!! Based on great reviews from both friends and yelp, I thought I would give it a try. The main reason I came here was because I heard it was very sterile - no double dipping the stick. I was sorely disappointed. The sevice started with a less than pleasant receptionist. She was merely doing her job, and that didn't include a smile. When she told me to go in the 1st room, I commented that people in the waiting room would be able to see me if the door opens. Her response? "No they won't." Umm, yes they will! My waxer was very nice and pleasant - Evonne. That is not the point. The point is: SHE DOUBLE DIPPED THE STICK THROUGHOUT THE WAX PROCESS. So much for hygenic. When I called the salon the next day to ask about it, the unfriendly receptionist didn't want me to speak with the manager and wanted to help me. When I told her the problem, she said they don't double dip, or the can of wax was a small, personalized size that was only used for me and nobody else. I'm not buying it. The can looked used before I came in and after my service the waxer went to lunch. I saw no signs of anyone going in to put a new can of wax in for the next person and remove my can. No thanks. Not worth those prices for that service. read more

Was a huge fan of Sister's Salon until I moved to NYC and found a real brazilian salon (J Sisters - owned and operated by brazilians themselves) with people who have TLC when stripping you. It made a huge difference and when I returned to Chicago I couldn't go back to Sister's Salon. That's when I discovered Ruby Room - where they encourage me to breath deeply at opportune moments, and the final result is equally satisfying. read more
