Don't let anyone tell you different. Mike's Speedway Lounge is a decent place to celebrate a 16th…read moreanniversary, no matter what that 16th anniversary is. (OK, maybe not the anniversary of your sobriety.) It's located on 16th Street in Speedway, so you have numerology in your favor. It's mellow and laid-back, like the number 16. (No one thinks about the number 16, so it has no responsibilities. The number 16 doesn't have to do any heavy lifting like 15 or 20.) It has decent food. You can really just relax at Mike's and settle into the hazy fog of canned beer and fried foods. This bar opens at noon, and like a degenerate fiend, I was there right when it opened. A guy who seemed like a regular sat down at the bar not too long after I grabbed a table, and a beer was placed in front of him before he even had time to arrange himself on his barstool. Then, wordlessly, a basket of food soon followed. Mike's Speedway Lounge is that kind of place: It's where everyone knows your name, and if you're lucky, your beer and food will materialize in front of you with little to no effort. This was my first time visiting, though, so nothing materialized in front of me. That said, the service was excellent. There was one woman working when I visited, and she was opening beers, taking orders, cooking, settling tabs, dealing with deliveries and wiping tables all by herself. She also had time to tell me about the length of her father's grass, and that was a pleasant conversation. By the time I left, there were several people at the bar chatting with the server and each other. It was a nice and friendly atmosphere. Speaking of opening beers: There are no beers on tap here. Zero. All of the beer is in cans or bottles. They do have a lot of liquor, though, so they can make you a little something, if you want. The food is OK and what you'd expect for a bar. Burgers and sandwiches come with fries, which were excellent. Mike's serves crinkle-cut fries, and they are perfectly fried, so they are crispy on the outside but soft and mealy on the inside. I'm a patty melt person through and through, so that's what I got. The patty melts at Mike's are served between slices of marble rye bread, which was a nice surprise, but the cheese is American, which isn't my favorite. We also got the Mike's Famous Spanish Burger, which is a super thick burger patty with tomato sauce and bell peppers. Apparently, it tastes like a stuffed pepper made into a burger. So depending on where you stand with stuffed peppers, you will either love this burger, or feel like you need to urgently use the restroom after you eat it. Your mileage may vary. There's a pool table here, as well as a digital juke box, a claw machine with twisted things in it (I can't even say what those things are, because Yelp would probably flag my review), a racing video game (because Indy 500), and a few machines that dispense pull tab tickets. This is an old-school bar for sure. The only thing missing is the clouds of cigarette smoke. This is a no-smoking bar!

Keagan Fife (Manager) - A team player, receptive to feedback and conscientious. We had a issue while there and he was able to step in and problem solve with me and come up with a solution that really won us over. We had a moment where it was feeling a bit "why did we come here" but his customer service exceeded expectation. That's good management. (He's the gentleman in the video below.) Let's get the negative out the way 1st. The first waitress asked if we wanted anything to drink. I told her we hadn't received menus. She came back sat them down and walked away. We never saw her again. A new waitress came and she seemed pleasant enough. Once we were all seated she began to take our orders. She made a point to say she needed to write it all down or she was get it mixed up. She then did not write anything down. Our food came out extremely slow but that wasn't a huge deal because we all were mingling. A lot of her team had to step in and deliver our food, give drinks, check on us etc. She was pretty non existent. Two of the ladies never received food. This was after we had been there for 2 hours and everyone else had received their items. At the end when we asked for our check they were all mixed up and confused. The waitress then blamed us for adding things and moving around. We never moved once and she only came around the one time when she originally took our orders. We never got a chance to add things. (it was quite comical that she tried to say that) I ended up asking for manager because she seemed overwhelmed and a bit bias about our group. Assuming that we wouldn't want one check and splitting them because she figured we would want it that way and then blaming us because she did it when we never asked for split. There rule is parties over 8 have to have 1 bill and we never asked for an exception. There was just her assumption that a group of black women wouldn't want to do that. (I digress) There were a few more things but I will end it there. That was the big negative. Now the positive!!! Ambiance 10/10 - great views, great music, great location, umbrellas on roof were great although a but wobbly and scary. Also, they come around with complimentary sunglasses while dining. I thought this was a nice and luxurious touch! Food 8/10 - most food received was delicious Service 9/10 - everyone except for our server was great! Everyone who pitched in to help was awesome! Ended up tipping a different server who basically helped us the whole time. Bless his heart because I know he was super busy. As stated above management handle the situation well. I would definitely go back! I try to give people a chance. I think our server may have been overwhelmed and had a past experience that left her bias against our group but hopefully she can grow and get better. Her actions don't reflect the restaurant as a whole! Go and enjoy the vibes and views!

Our first round, we got beers because we're boring and basic. lBut they were local beers, and they were on tap, so that kind of made up for our basic choices, because the local beer scene in Indy is amazing. Hiatus offers a selection of several different local beers, so you will probably find some of your favorites. We got the Workingman's Pilsner from Fountain Square Brew, which is great. We also tried the Cold Hammer Highball canned cocktail from West Fork Whiskey Company, which was awesome. If you're in the mood for a canned cocktail, you can't go wrong with one from West Fork Whiskey Company. There are also other canned cocktails available. But Hiatus also offers non-canned cocktails, and they have a full menu of cocktails to choose from. Once you get your drink, you can enjoy it at the bar or carry it around with you around The Amp. Good deal!

The AVG is definitely a neighborhood tavern. It's cozy and very laid back with high top tables. I ordered an Old Fashioned but mixed drinks weren't really on offer unless it was something like rum and coke. I had a beer. It was fine. We were there for about an hour and a half. I would definitely return. The vibes were slow paced. We moved on to The Checkered Flag. Wowza!! It was a Thursday night but the place was hopping. We were joined by another friend with plans to have a bite to eat. The menu is unbelievable. So much to choose from. We were kind of boring because 3 of us chose the same thing and the other two chose the same item. Two had the pork tenderloin. Both agreed it was excellent. Three of us had the BBQ Pork spud. It's a giant baked potato with butter, a good spread of pimento cheese, moist pulled pork, BBQ sauce, coleslaw and green onions. It was fantastic. Normally the pork can become a bit dry. This was not the case. Cooked perfectly. I was able to order the Old Fashioned. They apologized because they were out of oranges but I was fine. It was a very good drink. There happened to be two musicians performing. I was quite impressed. This tavern was very very impressive. We all agreed to return Our final stop was Herrmann. It's a small brewery tucked away off a quiet street. We were offered several tastings of the beers on offer. We were all able to find something to our liking. I had a porter. There are tables for four spread around the seating area. It's comfortable and definitely a neighborhood haunt. All three places were definitely neighborhood taverns. The Checkered Flag was hands down the best! Indy has so much to offer!

After debating venturing out into…read morewinter weather and playing the downtown parking hunger games, we decided staying in the building was the move. Convenience: 10/10. Turner's itself is a good sized establishment with a pool table and a few different seating areas, which makes it feel like a solid spot to hang out whether you're there for drinks, food, or killing time before an event. They also have a cut out window where you can order Julieta Tacos, which is a really cool option if you want to mix things up food wise without leaving the space. We grabbed seats at the bar where a bartender (didn't catch her name) greeted us and handed over menus. I mentioned we were there for the Devour menu and was told it was over... which was interesting since Turner's website was still advertising it earlier that same morning. After a quick check with a manager, they honored it, which we definitely appreciated because nothing says "Devour disappointment" like ghosted food promos. The Devour deal included a hot dog, chips, and a cocktail. I ordered the Miami Vice and honestly, no notes. Solid drink. We also got to pick snack sized chip bags hanging behind the bar, which felt a little like choosing snacks at a gas station, but hey, variety is variety. Now for the plot twist... We were told our hot dogs were ready and to grab them from the warmer. Exciting, right? Except when we opened the warmer, the foil wrapped hot dogs were... cold. Cold. Like they, too, were braving the Indiana winter. When we let staff know, there was a bit of a team huddle on how to handle it, which felt slightly awkward and unorganized. It also felt like we accidentally became "those customers," simply for wanting our hot dogs to be warm. Thankfully, another bartender, Andre, stepped in like the calm in the storm. He got fresh hot dogs warmed up and brought them out and he continued checking on us for the rest of our visit, which honestly saved the experience. Overall: Cocktails were good, the location is super convenient if you're already at The Stutz, and shoutout to Andre for turning things around! That said, I can probably check Turner's off my list and doubt I'll make a trip back unless I'm already at The Stutz & if I do return, it would likely be for drinks only!
