Signed up for their maintenance plan last fall. They checked my furnace, all good. This spring I…read morescheduled a maintenance call for my air conditioner. I told the repairman that I had turned it on once and I had no cooling. He checked inside, no problem. Went outside, took the cover off surrounding the air conditioner and immediately could see the problem. My dog had urinated on the corner repeatedly which ate away at everything and corroded the pipes that hold the refrigerant. He said he had to order the parts and it would be $3000 to fix. After 8 days I called and was scheduled for the repair. I never received a written estimate for the repair. Was never told the maintenance call was now a diagnostic call or that I would be charged. Never received a bill for this either. The repairman said it could take up to 4 hours to get it fixed. It took 2.5 hours. I paid and asked for a receipt, was told it would be emailed to me. After 4 days, I called as I had not gotten my receipt. It was promptly sent over. I was charged for 4 hours of work when it only took him 2.5 hours. I immediately called back and explained the overcharge. I was put on hold for over 15 minutes. Then I was told yes, the repair took 2.5 hours, but the additional time charged was from the earlier maintenance calll. I said that was already paid for as I was on their plan. Was told no, since it turned out to be a diagnostic call, not a maintenance call, I was being charged. I said he didnt diagnose anything, once the cover was taken off it was obvious what the problem was. She doubled down on her explanation. I had never been told this, never received a bill for this. I feel i was overcharged for the repair and they were simply making an excuse for the overcharge. I promptly cancelled any further maintenance from this company and will never use them again.

This time we had to wait several weeks for an appointment but it was not an emergency so we were ok to wait. Turns out our appointment was scheduled for the first day of the June heat wave. Shortly after Mark arrived, he showed us that our blower capacitor needed to be replaced, giving us a bunch of technical measurements that I did not understand at all! However, since our unit is somewhere between 8 and 10 years old, a replacement part did not seem out of the question and our total bill was about just over $150. What I appreciate about Greens is that you are given a time window, called when you are the next service call and called again when the tech is on the way.

My one & only critique was that I think the guy could have notified me of the price for the job a little earlier before he did too much work. The price was really fair though, $318 after tax to replace capacitor & no extra charge to come out. I looked online and they run around $60-$300. My unit is 21 years old so that price is on the low-end, but still seems very fair too me. Highly recommend!

Every year the AC fails to work until someone comes out to look at it. We try to book the free AC service from the maintenance program for late April/early May to have it ready for summer but they constantly call to push those appointments due to "high demand for service calls" and frequently don't get that free visit until we call because the AC is working, usually on the hottest day of the year to that point. This year is no different and we have not had AC since Friday July 17th. Called to set up an appointment and the earliest I was told was available is Monday (July 20) afternoon. I asked about priority scheduling with the maintenance program and they said they would put us on an emergency services waitlist. It is now Sunday afternoon and when I called to check they said nobody will be coming before tomorrow with our scheduled appointment. I cannot believe there are that many other priority customers that with all their technicians they cannot get someone out to my house within 3 days. I can only assume it is because the terms of the program also mean I don't have to pay overtime/weekend rates so they are prioritizing higher revenue customers. If I were a potential customer looking to replace an HVAC system I would not go with Schaal again. If I were a potential customer needing service I would not call Schaal either; look for a better locally owned company (Schall was bought out by private equity a few years ago). I'm giving 2 stars as the installation and service in 2021 and 2022 was as expected but fell off quickly after ownership changed in 2022.

Then, my smart thermostat was discovered to be faulty. I asked for a similar smart thermostat. Kelly said he didn't like those and recommended his favorite- a manual control programmable. Being without air on 85 degree day, I agreed. He charged me $130 for the service call and $160 for the thermostat. The "new" thermostat failed after about 3 days so I called him and requested replacement with smart thermostat again, which he said was $50 higher (now $210 for the thermostat !) In the meantime, I checked local RETAIL prices on the defective therm he installed = $44; and the RETAIL price of my replacement smart therm = $90. I felt he should make it right by replacing his bad one with the better one at no additional cost. Still giving him a $70 markup. I felt he was grossly overcharging, under serving, defensive, argumentive, and somewhat hostile when he said " you either pay me the extra $50, or I'm not coming". So much for his website saying "Our prices are always fair, and we even offer a senior citizen discount." No senior or veteran discount was even considered or offered. My lowest cost option was to accept his threat and "get it done". I've been cheated and mistreated before and usually "fight" it, but he had me over a barrel. No apology for the inconvenience, the therm failure, no senior or other discount, no consideration at all for his customer. He only wanted to rip off as much money as he could. His teenage assistant was the most helpful in resetting the smart therm app for me. I'm wondering- Should I recommend, or reuse Kelly again??? I think not, and don't recommend others to use him. Unprofessional, greedy, and "my way or the Hiway" kinda guy. Sincerely, Steve Alexander , West Des Moines
