Simple Pleasures is my favorite shop in Providence. There is always something imaginative for gift-giving--and they wrap everything beautifully, with delightful paper and ribbons. You never know what you'll find, yet you can always count on finding something fabulous. Mary has an extraordinary eye for discovering special goods from all over the world, including things you might otherwise find only in France. I was so pleased to see some of my favorite designers still here from twelve years ago, before I moved away. Candy, cards, socks, blankets, candles, tea towels, wallets, totes, beautiful things to hang and admire, and whimsical--or not-so-whimsical--spiritual and manifestation treasures. Cozy store with a ton of history. This business was recommended to me and I figured I would check out the hype! Stopped in today for small business Saturday and left with a few goodies. They did have a sign on the door asking customers to not take photos while inside- whether it is for security purposes or to ward off the use of google image. I guess you will have to visit yourself! My 3 sisters and my mother and I walked into simple pleasures after a beautiful brunch at waterman grille. My mom started walking into the store because it is her birthday and wanted to see the jewelry. Immediately upon entering we noticed how beautiful and organized the shop is. Rather small in space with only a few costumers in shop. The merchandise was from all over the world and my family (being well traveled) noticed many heritage pieces. My oldest sister had asked the store owner if she had made the jewelry herself. The woman firmly and with very rude intention responded "what?, what are you talking about NO." Afterwards we attempted to keep light conversation about the countries the items were from. The owner and her daughter are extremely rude and disconnected. They never once looked up at us or bothered to stop texting to answer our questions. On top of it they're very uneducated on their products and extremely over priced for items you can get for bulk on Amazon. I would of purchased some jewelry from this store if the woman would actually care about selling their products. Unfortunately I will never come back here. read more

I was super excited to check out Simple Pleasure on a recent trip to Providence, and in fact, made a special trip to get there. It was...ok. There was one woman working there who was very quiet, which is fine, but almost seemed bugged that a customer was in the store (I was masked). Also, there was a nice selection of gifts, clothing and home goods, but I found them to be pricier than they needed to be. Oh well! read more

Great Hidden Gem in Providence! Mother-Daughter team have such a great shop IN an old forge! How awesome is this!! This is a shop you'll want to share with your girlfriends! Beautiful seasonal linens and candles with handcrafted Mexican dishes, so easy to pick up items for your home. There's a children's corner for lovely gifts & surprises. The cowboy mouse comes in his own suitcase --how cute! Lots of linens, tea towels, throws, and textiles. Will be back for the balsom fir home fragrances. Lots of beautiful soaps, and bodycare. Crystals & gemstone collection as well as smudging sticks & palo santo incense bringin good karma. Great shop for gifts & surprises as well as for the home. This side of Providence should be explored and Simple Pleasures should be a destination. The definition of a mom and pop store, this store reminds me of Marblehead and Westport CT. We stumbled upon this place while eating at nearby Waterman Grille and we're happy to see that it was open on the cold rainy day. The outside looked so welcoming! When we got inside, it was a small but cozy little shop filled with knickknacks and other unique items that you couldn't find at your standard store. The ambiance was also nice and I enjoyed the soothing soft music in the background. Unique gloves, scarves, chocolate, candy, cards and much, much more. I loved their selection and while I did not purchase anything at the time, I would considering coming back for Christmas gift purchases. It was a bit expensive but since the items are unique, it's not surprising (especially in Providence). I will say that the Yelp hours didn't quite match up as we went on a Sunday and Yelp said it was closed so you may want to call for updated hours if you're interested in stopping by. I'll likely be back; especially if we head back to Waterman Grill. read more

I love this shop. Not only is it the cutest store around (in a sweet little house tucked away with a little garden) there are really unique items that are so fun for gifting or window shopping. I always want to stop in. Fun story- I purchased some cards online given that the recent pandemic meant less out and about shopping. I selected pick-up rather than delivery. Then a day later, Alice from the store texted me and said she'd be driving by my house (she had my address from the order) and offered to hand deliver my order. I absolutely love this little shop - especially when shopping around the holidays. They have everything from cozy sweaters, socks and scarves to tree decorations, wreathes and beautiful candles. Located right in front of The Waterman Grill, it's easy to miss as it's just off Wayland Square and you don't realize from the outside that's it's a fabulous little boutique. It's absolutely stuffed to the brim with adorable little trinkets, and I always make sure to stop here for stocking stuffers, decorations and even chocolate. What a special little shop. All kind of imported trinkets and whimsical finds: crystals, chocolates, clothing, skincare, home decor, children's toys etc. all in one quaint space. Tucked away on the east side you just might miss it passing by. Simple Pleasures it such a treat every time you walk through the door, and expect to stay awhile examining almost everything in the store in pure awe. Everything is so beautifully decorated and placed just right you'll want to take one of each and one more just in case. I love this shop. A treasure in providence. I always come here when I need something for someone hard to shop for. I also love their greeting cards. They were super helpful when I was putting together a gift for a client and willing to box/arrange/wrap the present even though most of the things I bought from other places. When I walk into Simple Pleasures, all I can hear inside my head is a little voice going, "ooh!" and "aah!" and "{gasp!}". Then I look at the prices and I'm all like, "Daaamn!" "oh my god!" "whaaa?!" But I digress. Orla Kiely, Baggu, Marimekko, Matta Clothing, Rifle Paper Co., Hannah Blount Jewelry, Hobo, etc. etc. etc. These are good names to be in the company of, don't get me wrong. Lots of accessories for the home and your body. Unfortunately, the shopowner's customer service techniques sort of bothered me.... On my most recent visit I inquired if they carried a certain item and the owner basically went off on a tangent about her personal "beef" with the company that sells the item. That is neither my business nor of any interest to me. Tell the company, don't take it out on me. And also, she dogged the $26 Blinc mascara I was buying. I felt confused and wanted me to be like, "wait, so should I not buy this then?". PS: I love the mascara, so I have no idea what her concerns were for.... Anyway, go check it out. Love, love this unique store! Despite it's small footprint I can get lost looking at the fantastic selection of interesting, beautiful, well made gifts. They fit an amazing amount of great product into an incredibly small space! It is my go-to place for inspired gifts in Providence. I had been meaning to visit this store for ages (kept walking past it when it was closed) and finally made it this weekend - and now I can't believe I haven't been buying my hostess and holiday gifts here the whole time I've lived in Providence! What a unique store. Beautiful handmade jewelry, distinctive scarves, Rifle Paper stationery, Marimekko cocktail napkins, hand-embroidered tea towels and pillows by Coral & Tusk, luxury soaps, gorgeous beeswax candles from Maine, Smartwool socks and tights, and even clothing (mostly knits)- they have it all. The building that the store is housed in is quite tiny, but somehow everything inside is laid out perfectly and it doesn't feel claustrophobic. I left with a nice bar of soap and some candles I'm going to give to a friend for hosting Thanksgiving later this week. Can't wait to return for more holiday present shopping! read more

While this shop has some interesting merchandise I cannot and will not spend money at a store where the staff is not friendly. Firstly shop is extremely small (almost claustrophobic when there are a lot of customers). So to try on a piece of jewelry you need assistance and there is just not enough space to make this easy. But what really bothered me was the person who assisted me (Mary?) hovered on top of me like I was going to steal what I was trying on!! Not a good welcoming experience so won't be back. read more

Would give zero stars if I could. It was only around 6 pm and my husband and I had just finished eating at Watermen Grille and then saw this store. We were excited to go in because it's beautiful on the outside and wanted to see the inside. The owner has a million different signs on the door and a huge one said "ask before you come in" so my husband opened the unlocked door and peaked his head in to ask. She was so rude, yelled at us that they were closed. We apologized and said we'd leave but then she was yelling at us to "just come in" anyway. We refused since she was beyond rude. That wasn't the end of it, my husbands mask was falling down as he was talking back to her and she yells to us that "everyone's dying because of people like you". I've never seen worst customer service in my life. We couldn't believe it. I am all for small businesses which is why we wanted to shop there in the first place and to be treating like that was disgusting. That women has a screw loose. read more

We saw this store on the way to our restaurant and we had to stop by it. Such a cozy little store with neat stuff inside. Some things are very expensive like some scarfs that I was looking at ($75-$250- really??) so I ended up buying some soaps that smelled amazing. I love this store! Don't make it here often, but when I do I always find just the right treat. Their wares are so distinctive and jazzy, and everything I've given as a gift gets rave reviews. The selection of jewelry has spiced up my collection and I'm always asked where I got one particular necklace - sometimes I lie and say some place exotic like Mexico, and people believe me. Hah! This is a cute shop but many of the items are extremely pricy. I have bought a few things and the young woman who works there is very helpful, however the older woman who seems to be the owner, is a raving snob and a poor salesperson. She has been less than helpful each time and the last time I shopped there she was outright ignorant. I was short of time for a gift and know my sister likes the shop, so I looked for a while. It's a very small shop ant it is hard to get a good look at things with even just a few customers. The worst part is that the owner rather have lengthy chats with individual customers, who she often seems to know, and who aren't necessarily purchasing a thing, instead of assisting even one other customer. Last visit I must have looked in one of the cases 4 -5 times, with no offer for help. I finally spoke up. When I helped my self to look at items that were out in the open on display she quite sharply said, "I will get that down to show you," as if I were a child. I am 50. The items were easily reached. Finally the young lady helped me, I spent nearly $80.00 and as I exited I could hear the older woman exclaim, "Thank God. " If she had assisted me she would not have had to have me in the shop nearly as long. If I didn't need the gift I would have demanded a refund! I had parked next to the building and was so irritated I slammed my car door shut. The nasty woman glared out the window at me in my car, which I shot right back at her. There were a few people in the shop so I didn't feel like commenting further when I heard her snipe, before I had even completed my exit. So this is my comment. The owner should attend to all of the customers and not expect everyone to be able to or want to purchase $250.00 scarves and tops that are up to $500.00. I am not unlikely to occasionally splurge, however many items are not worth the price This nasty, self impressed owner needs to get over her self. She may sell some pretty items but they are usually extremely overpriced, and her personal style is nothing about which she should feel haughty! read more

They do have some pricey things, but you can always count on witty and unusual cards, stocking stuffers, hostess gifts, even unusual magazines and cookbooks that won't break the bank. I live in San Francisco and I go to Providence periodically for alumnae events at my college. Simple Pleasures is an amazing little jewel at the end of Waterman Street near the river. What a find! The visuals are really terrific and there's a wonderful selection of home textiles-fragrance-gifts and my favorites, cool clothing and major jewelry. I have such a good time peeking into the corners and trying on everything. Mary and her daughter, Alice, are so helpful and always know what will fit and look fabulous.
