Brief Summary: - Beautiful and cozy interior - Seats inside and into a space that opens up to what looks like an apartment or warehouse space? - Coffee is slightly sour but it mellows out after a few sips - Noise level: quiet to medium Walked around the river side in the early morning, and after some time we started searching for coffee nearest here. After searching view Google Maps, this one popped up closest to us. It's located within an old brick building, and generosity the staff have by placing an entrance sign because this doorway could easily be overlooked. The interior opens up to a wide area with some seats alongside the walls, further inside there are more seats and benches. In my case, I was also looking to charge my device and I only found one spot (a bench enclosed in a small roof) that had some electrical outlets). I ordered a pastry that I don't recall the name anymore, but inside included cheese and ham. I also ordered a cup of coffee. To my surprise, the city hosts some local events and we happened to arrive when all the coffee drinks were treated by the city free of charge. The details are vague in my memory, but the time window frame is narrow and the city chooses random cafe places. Out of the many, our first coffee place in Portland happened to be the one that was free. It was a friendly surprise and a great start to the food experience to come. The coffee and the pastry arrived at the same time, soon after I paid, so I got to pick them up and take them to the table we chose to sit down and relax for a bit. The coffee was slightly sour but it mellows out after a few drinks. It didn't need a lot of milk or sugar in this case. I liked the pastry we decided to get with the coffee. I thought this was unique for its crispy and tough crust and inside it contains hot melted cheese and ham. There was a strong saltiness coming from one of these ingredients but I couldn't pinpoint which one. I would be able to eat this with a drink but on its own it might become quite salty in the mouth later. read more

The coffee is amazing and although I am grain-free and sugar-free the food offering looked amazing and She makes it in house! She also hosted a local business mixer that we crashed by accident and she comped our coffee which was an amazing way to end our Portland visit. Once we found this shop-she is the Only business in this huge building in a very quiet but visually interesting part of town. Highly recommend!!! read more

This is a great coffee place near my work. The barista here is super friendly and quick with the drinks. I really enjoyed my iced matcha tea. They have a common area that you can sit and have a conversation at. This will be my go-to spot by work for future coffee meetings. read more

Simple Local is the coffee shop I always wanted to frequent. The woman who runs it makes the pastries herself everyday and puts a lot of care into the coffee and atmosphere, even remembering the regular patrons usual orders. It's a great place to work while you enjoy your coffee in the morning, with a lot of seating and almost always very quiet. If you are in the area and need caffeine, you must visit. read more

Our barista was very friendly and welcoming as soon as we came in. The vibe was simple and very relaxing. She was actually the owner who had been in business for many years and I was very happy to support her! Huge plus that there is no extra charge for soy, oat or almond milks. 10/10 in book. Also coffee was great, we went simple and ordered an iced vanilla oat milk latte. read more

I came here for an industry related meeting (they let us host in their "atrium" area adjacent to their cafe) and I was really surprised how great the carafe of coffee was! Probably the best coffee I have had in quite some time! I also tried most of the baked goods- which are baked in-house each day!!! My favorite was the berry muffin. What a great coffee stop, I can't wait to add it to my rotation. read more

This is the best coffee shop I've found in Portland. The owner/barista is a machine, she works so fast and is so friendly. The coffee is always great. The pastries are also absolutely to die for! Particularly, the apple cheddar scone!!! Absolutely gem of a place! I refuse to go elsewhere! Even if the line is long, I've never waited for more than 7 minutes! One of the best coffee shops in Portland. They use Sterling coffee beans. The building has a really great skylight in the middle, which is a great spot to enjoy your drink. Friendly owner/barista. Came upon this coffee shop as I was venturing through downtown Portland on the hunt for some Voodoo Donuts. The first thing I noticed was the cute blue sign outside and knew I wanted to step inside to check out the coffee shop. I ordered the Honey Lavender Iced Latte and it was phenomenal. The latte had a subtle hint of lavender and perfect amount of sweetness from the honey. It was definitely a great drink to help me cool down from the heat, especially after a few hours of bike riding. I'm so glad I decided to get coffee here because I ended up liking it more than Stumptown and all the other coffee shops I visited during my Portland trip! read more

Might be my very favorite coffee shop bar none. Daughter and I arrived fairly early on a Monday morning and the line was fairly long. Worth the wait! I had an amazing specialty coffee drink made with home made syrup. We ordered three pastries to share for just the two of us. All three were great! The marionberry muffin was a standout! As we were leaving (and the line had died down) we spoke with the woman manning the counter and making all the drinks. She and her husband are the owners. She takes the morning shift because he gets up in the middle of the night and makes all the pastries fresh for day. He is a talented baker! If I lived in Portland it would be hard to keep me away from here! read more

Visited this establishment today and the server was insanely rude to myself and other customers I was with. We were on our way upstairs to set up and the person was rude to us about not immediately buying product. Which would normally be reasonable if it weren't for the fact we explained that we were going to come back down to order our beverages after we set our books down (this for a study session.) She behaved unprofessionally in front of other customers despite the fact that we calmly explained our intentions--that we were absolutely interested in purchasing a drink. She did calm down AFTER I set my armful of books down on the counter and placed my order and carried the mug upstairs (with my books in my arms) as proof we absolutely were patrons with the intention to purchase and consume goods. Absolutely will not return and I do not advise others to go. read more

The absolutely best coffee shop in all of Portland. Like... hands down I would travel a distance to go here. Not only is the coffee the best I ever had, but the woman who owns it is an absolutely amazing person. Love this quaint, local business, just a couple of blocks from Worldmark, where I was staying. Super friendly staff of one! Pastries were always warm, right out of the overnight, and different that what can be found at other shops. The stuffed bagel was amazing, and the apple cheese scone was definitely a taste of the PNW. Tried the drip coffee and salted caramel latte, which was the right bakance and not overly sweet. Can't wait for a return visit! read more

This place showed up a few years ago and has never dipped in quality. The owner is almost always running the counter, and bakes pastries fresh each morning. It is a small shop but the line moves fast. This is my go to spot when I have someone in town who wants to meet and catch up since there is always seating in the common area. You can also catch a peek into the shanghai tunnels below this building. There are a lot of alternatives in this neighborhood and I've tried them all, this is the one to beat. Good job little coffee shop. read more

Cozy. Warm. Inviting. Awesome. Some of the nicest folks in all of Portland run this awesome spot. Arrive early for gooey pastries and delicious hot cocoa + lattes with house-made syrup. They also have baguette sandwiches and soup for lunch... until they run out, which they tend to do frequently because they're so damn good. Guess I'll just have a cinnamon roll for lunch. Things could be worse, believe me :-) PS Check out the upstairs 'loft' for a nice spot to do some writing or meet a friend. Great WiFi and comfy chairs upstairs means it's easy to hang out here for a long time. read more

Loved reading at this shop when we could still go to cafes. Simple Local is open for shortened hours now (some time until noon?) and has a great set-up. You order online and she gets your order ready, then leaves it on a table just inside the main hallway of the building where she can see it but there's plenty of distance between you and her. Super cute, just like everything about Simple Local. If you haven't been here, I recommend her salted caramel late and salty chocolate chip cookies. But don't overthink it. She's using Sterling so just a simple americano is pretty baller too. Regular secret? Try on that grapefruit soda. It's ah-mazing if you have a hangover or you're just feeling low. Lauren is the shop's owner and she has one of those rarely-rewarded customer service personalities. When I had my youthful barista years, I was occasionally crunchy in the morning. Lauren is ALWAYS pleasant and real. Tip her! So she can keep offering up excellent coffee and sweets. read more

If you are close to the waterfront this is one of the best spots for great coffee and an AMAZING assortment of pastries and stuffed bagels. The owner is always friendly, quick, and knowledgeable -- there is room to work on your laptop, read a book, or just chat. Supporting local in downtown Portland is so important, you won't regret it. read more

Consistently great coffee and friendly service by Lauren ...and you gotta try their muffins made by her man who makes most if not all of their pastries. I usually get a latte and their pancetta muffin. It's a laid back, inexpensive option in a convenient part of downtown that I can say is Top 5 (maybe 3) when it comes to coffee. read more

Seriously, the best London Fog I've had. I live in San Francisco but fly up every month for work and I always have to stop in for a London Fog because they're that good. The owner is so sweet and warm every time I come in and remembers my order. Also, she has amazing hair styles which is irrelevant but true. She makes all of her pastries fresh, in house, every morning and you can tell. 100% I've become a regular from San Francisco. If you're not a coffee drinker or even if you are, try the London Fog, it will raise your standards. read more

Our group of 7 (5 adults and 2 kids) stopped in after a tour of downtown yesterday. The barista that was working was charming and helpful. She helped each of us decide what we wanted and even helped to make some of their specialty hot drinks into cooler options since it was so hot outside. My salted carmel iced latte was absolutely delicious! My kids ordered the lemonade, and I was completely blown away when the barista spend the next several minute HAND SQUEEZING lemons! Really. . . I'm serious. It was fresh squeezed. She added extra sweetener for my kids, and left my husband's tart, just how he likes it. The rest of the group ordered a mixture of iced coffee/lattes, and iced tea lattes. Every single one was delicious! read more

This place is by one of one the coolest little treasures I've ever seen. Everyone that walks in is treated like a well known friend. And the caramel and muffins... I don't know where to begin, but my mouth waters at the thought! A little extra info: Free wifi that doesn't boot you off =D, calm and quiet environment, a lot of seating (some on a loft, some below, some in a cool open area), and they have a good grilled cheese and soup for lunch! read more

When I first went in, I was in love with the high-vault ceiling and simplicity of the cafe. But I found the barista off-putting. Not genuine. Snobbish. I've gone back a few more times bringing co-workers, friends, etc. and I've experienced the same weird attitude from the same barista (blonde lady). It's a shame. I'm not expecting enthusiasm but from personally working years in the service industry (cafes, bars, restaurants), attitudes like this barista makes me not want to come back to this cafe. The Americano is okay. Fortunately, Pine Street Market is opened and I can just walk there for a great cup of coffee with easy-going people. There's also Society Hotel with a cute cafe and friendly folks. read more

One of my favorite activities is to go searching for new coffee shops in town that best my previous favorite. And god knows this town is full of absolutely incredible coffee, and I have tried a lot of lovely places. But I have to say Simple Local is my favorite. Cute shop, gorgeous ceilings and lovely atmosphere. My cappuccino is always on point and hits the spot, and there are a plethora of (all fresh and homemade!) scones, cookies, sandwiches and donuts. If you get there early enough they will be still warm and gooey! Husband and wife team, he does the baking and she is the coffee badass and is an absolute sweetheart to boot. Give this wonderful duo your business, you won't regret it! read more

Adore this place... the physical space is breath-taking: high ceilings, big windows, exposed brick walls, original harwood floors. The coffee is even better -- from Sterling Roasters, and the barista/owner (who I found absolutely charming) knows her stuff... my drinks were prepared to perfection. In the morning they have seriously divine pastries and for lunch you can get soups & sandwiches. I will be coming her again for sure -- and I'm obsessed with coffee so I don't say this lightly, highly recommend! read more

I finally had a reason to go to Old Town twice these past few weeks and everything is still delicious, and the owner&barista is still exemplary at what she does! Homemade pastries, great coffee, great cocoa. Friendly staff. Comfy and warm. What more do you need? Lauren uses local ingredients as much as possible, and you can tell when you taste her pastries and beverages. She pays attention to the little details. Her muffins, cronuts (yes, you have to try one), and other goodies are so much better than what you find at other coffee places. Oh, and a beautiful space with free wifi. Nice place to hang out away from the busy downtown bustle. Close to waterfront. read more

This is such a great little getaway in the middle of the city. I never find myself ordering any kind of flavored or altered coffee/espresso drinks but when I noticed the honey and lavender lattè I decided to go outside my comfort for coffee. Big win! Such a great and subtly done masterpiece. Everyone is so warm and friendly. I go occasionally but now a bit more often:) read more

The Pros: First off, the staff is incredibly sweet and friendly. They make you feel welcome the second you walk in. The modern, cool design of the space is top tier. It is exactly the kind of atmosphere you want when grabbing a coffee in Portland. I also love their progressive approach to dairy; they default to plant based milks and there is no upcharge for them, which is a huge win for accessibility and sustainability. The Cons: Unfortunately, the experience was completely undercut by the quality of the pour. The oat milk curdled almost immediately. I am well aware that Stumptown uses a more naturally acidic brew, which is a science experiment waiting to happen with plant milks, and I know it is technically safe to drink. However, the separation completely ruins the mouthfeel. Instead of a creamy, cohesive sip, I was left with a watery base and grainy floaties. It is disappointing to be told that this is normal when specialty cafes have the tools like barista grade buffers and temperature control to prevent this. While the ethics and the aesthetic are on point, a drink that looks and feels curdled just is not an acceptable standard to serve to customers. Summary: Great people, great space, great pricing, but the technical execution of the plant based drinks needs a serious overhaul.

I have probably spent a couple thousand dollars on their business. Not being able to pour my cup of coffee in a to-go cup when leaving is ridiculous and not standard practice. I found this out the hard way when I had ordered a drip coffee for here and, when leaving, the women kinda snapped at me when I kindly asked for an 8oz to-go cup. I'm on their bi weekly coffee subscription. I'm located in Portland and my bag of beans was routed from Portland to Detroit, then San Francisco then back to my home in Portland on my last order. How odd. I tried reaching out to them to figure out what's going on and there is no way of contacting their business. Their website has no contact information and I called multiple times and no one would pick up the phone. I finally found a personal gmail account linked to their business somewhere on their google business profile but no one ever responded to me. I find it to be very odd that they're running an online business, you can't contact them, and they don't have anyone attending customer service. That's very bad practice. If it weren't for how good the coffee is, PushXPull would be dead last on my preferred coffee shop. I'll update my review once these issues are addressed.

His hospitality set the tone for the whole evening--warm, relaxed, and full of conversation between people from all over the world. One of the highlights was watching Joe prepare traditional Egyptian coffee over hot sand, a centuries-old method that slowly heats the coffee and brings out deep, rich flavors. But the real comfort of the night came in the form of Egyptian Sahlab. Imagine a thick, creamy winter drink made from warm milk, gently sweetened and flavored with vanilla and orange blossom water. Those of you who tried it know what I am talking about! It was very nice to get a beautiful taste of Egyptian culture right here on Hawthorne. Huge thanks to Joe for the incredible hospitality and for sharing these traditions with us. I hope they expand to include a full Egyptian, Mediterranean food menu.
