Exposed materials, high ceilings, roasting equipment, and a café that feels connected to the actual work of producing coffee. There's something refreshing about seeing the machinery and craftsmanship instead of another coffee shop built around a carefully manufactured aesthetic. I've spent much of my career in the coffee industry, and I still get excited walking into places like this. Coava has been an important part of the Pacific Northwest's specialty coffee movement, and visiting the SE Grand location gives you a real appreciation for that history. What I particularly appreciate is the emphasis on coffee itself. The space invites you to pay attention to what you're drinking, but doesn't require you to know anything about processing methods or extraction to enjoy being there. Portland has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to coffee, but Coava belongs on any serious coffee itinerary. If you're interested in roasting, coffee culture, or simply seeing a beautiful space dedicated to the craft, make the stop.

The Vanilla Cloud Earl Grey Matcha is your standard matcha drink but the tea flavor stands out and compliments the strong ceremonial matcha powder, with an harmonious symphony between sweetness and herbal tea profiles. Definitely order this if you want the standard "default matcha" but with a hint of Tealoft's specialty take on Matcha. As seen in the picture, the matcha is a good green, with a dense luscious cloud topping. Inside there's small amount of seatings, enough for ~6 different party and a self serve kiosk. Overall Tealoft has great services, nice PNW aesthetics and in my opinion great twist on Matcha in Oregon. Would come back 100%.

It did end up being pretty sweet but since Stumptown coffee is bitter (for me), I figured it was the only way to mask the bitterness. My partner got the hot version with regular milk (both $8.25) and he had less coffee and more of the whipped topping. His cup was 75% coffee. Now let's talk, the artwork. The cinematography on the walls were great - such a great teaser to the movie and ode to Portland. I would not have came down to SW 3rd for Stumptown otherwise but happy we did.

We ordered a drip in a to-go cup and my partner couldn't stop talking about how great the cup of coffee was. Unfortunately, both suffered from a grind that was a little too fine, resulting in bitterness that was overwhelming in each. The single origin had some promise, with some pleasant acidity in the background, but it couldn't break through the bitter. Things were a little better in my wife's mocha, which had a deep chocolate flavor and silky smooth milk, it paired well with the cinnamon knot pastry we shared. Maybe a place to stick with the milk drinks, or at least this was my experience on this day.

We stopped in here after playing a round at the Wonderwood Mini Golf. It had been hot and cramped and we really needed a drink. The door was being held open by a line of people and usually that is a great sign. Being busy is awesome for the business and I am glad they are so popular. It was a weekday, probably around 11 am and there were just so many people in line. It was really cute inside but SO chaotic. There were tons of kids screaming and at times it was difficult to tell where the line really was. After about 5 minutes of the line not moving, I started to get a slight headache from the noise and we agreed we would have to go somewhere else. It was probably for the best as all the indoor and outdoor seating was full so there would have been nowhere for us to eat even if we had braved the line. I think when a business reaches this level of popularity, it's important to put systems in place to keep patrons from feeling crowded and overwhelmed and it's definitely something they might want to look into in the future.
