Today I forgot to bring my dr's order for my annual mammogram and I thought I was going to have to reschedule until Cynthia at the front stepped in, overrode the standard process and gave me a pass! I walked into Women's Center for Radiology, also known as Solis Mammography, feeling a little…read morenervous. Breast cancer runs in my family, so having a screening mammogram is already an uncomfortable and emotional experience for me. After checking in, one of the receptionists asked if I had an appointment and requested my prescription. I handed it to her, and she immediately said something under her breath in Spanish to another receptionist while pointing at my prescription. Naturally, I asked, "Is there something wrong?" The other receptionist then asked me how old I was. I remember thinking, Why is my age relevant? I'm there for a screening mammogram, I'm already nervous, and my prescription clearly had my information on it. I told her I was 33 and asked why my age was important. She immediately responded that I was "not old enough" for a mammogram and that my insurance wasn't going to cover it. I asked if they had actually contacted my insurance company to verify that. How could they know what my insurance would or would not cover without checking? As it turns out, my insurance does cover screening mammograms. But at that point, the issue was much bigger than insurance coverage. What really bothered me was the lack of sensitivity and professionalism shown by both receptionists. Breast cancer does not discriminate based on age, race, gender, or background. And neither receptionist knew whether I was paying through insurance, paying out of pocket, or had another reason for having the screening at my age. Patients should not feel judged, dismissed, or made to feel like they don't belong when seeking medical care--especially when they are already nervous about a potentially serious health concern. This was my first experience with Solis, and unfortunately, it will be my last. I hope the staff receives additional training on professionalism, communication, and treating every patient with empathy and respect.

The Rad tech was very polite and calm with her and they played some music to drowned out the noise (something she was looking forward to since her last MRI was a poor experience elsewhere). The seat used during the MRI was surprisingly comfortable, and one of the biggest positives for me was that I never felt claustrophobic at any point. If you're someone who gets nervous about traditional MRI machines, the stand-up MRI is definitely a great option. Unfortunately, the CD with my images wasn't available right away due to an issue with their equipment, but they mailed it to me fairly quickly afterward. Overall, I had a positive experience and would recommend Stand Up MRI, especially for anyone who is concerned about feeling confined or claustrophobic during an MRI.

Nonetheless, the $15 or $20 that you save is not worth it. They are completely disorganized; they will schedule with you and cancel at the last minute; their staff is ill trained; their pre-exam questionnaire is very burdensome; I think I'll stop there, otherwise I'll never finish. My strong recommendation to anybody is to steer away from them. Go somewhere else. Try AdventHealth or Orlando health, even if they charge a little more on co-pays.
