The customer service here sucks!! I walked in to inquire about getting my dress tailored and was not greeted or acknowledged. Yes, the woman was helping another customer but a simplistic "hello I'll be right with you" would have been fitting.. No pun intended. In addition, when I finally was assisted she was very dismissive and stated there was nothing she could do because of the material and lining. This place was originally recommended by a friend and when I read the reviews, seeing 3.9 stars (October 2022) was a bit startling and I read through all the reviews and despite several past customers stating Silvia was "rude", and "arrogant", I thought I'll still give her shot as someone who frequently shops at and supports small local businesses. I assumed her personality might be misperceived and was really a firm professional mindset being that many people tend to overlook the knowledge and skills of tailors - I was wrong. I had come in for several items, one was adding a zipper to my white Calvin Klein coat my SO gifted me. A white coat that I have put SO MANY HOURS into cleaning (scrubbing stains and all) and care and received so many compliments on. I'm far from a materialistic person but I LOVED my coat - it was the perfect style of white coat - especially its fur. I asked to have it cleaned professionally too, was promptly told it would be a dry clean. I agreed to whatever was available and appropriate. When I came to pick it up the faux fur was DESTROYED. No one gave a call to come pick it up nor did anyone give me a heads up the fur was destroyed. Want to know what Silvia said? She didn't know it was damaged beforehand. That the material was CHEAP that certain types of FAUX fur are known to have their fur destroyed, that the tags said DRY CLEAN ONLY. That it was the manufacturer's FAULT. That I should call the manufacturer to see if it could be swapped and fixed... SHE DID NOT TAKE THE FAULT until I opened up the jacket and pointed out the tags did not say it was dry cleanable. Regardless of what was dropped off, any reputable and decent tailor checks this and warns customers as it's not uncommon for this to happen. The body of the coat was fine but the faux fur which I previously adored being that it was the perfectly colored, fluffy, light and long fur was no more. After I voiced my disappointment she offered to replace it with whatever fur she had on hand that would be a close match. WHAT A JOKE when I finally came by to pick it up. Agai with her arrogance, she denied it didn't look like the original and she even claimed it was better quality than what I had. This ugly colored fur that had a pattern to it opposed to a more flowed color like mine had. Only after I demanded my money back for the dry cleaning did she return my money. Silvia is EXTREMELY arrogant, bitter, and COLD. I would NEVER come back here and I implore anyone from this part of NJ to avoid! This is a very overdue review but Silvia's Tailoring is a seamstress magician. Two years ago, I brought my wedding gown to her to get altered. My dress felt like a second skin after she tailored it. She genuinely cared that it would fit perfectly after all my weight loss, so she personally wanted me to come in for an additional 3rd fitting appointment to make sure it was still a perfect fit. She is a legit expert. She also sewed in clear snaps so that my veil cape would attach to my straps. Again, SHE IS A MAGICIAN. My dress was extra stunning all thanks to her. read more

Awful! Awful! I brought in two dress pants to have waist taken in and tailor took the easy and lazy technique. The seams in the back of the pants was unfinished and the pants looked like they had an extra pocket in the back. I was charged 60.00 for both pants. I didn't go back for a refund nor for her to fix instead I leave this review as a warning to future customers. read more

I took my daughter's prom dress to be altered and she did magnificent professional work. We wanted to have a change to the dress but she advised against it because of how it would affect the fit and she was spot on. She did something else instead and dress fit beautifully. She's experienced and professional and on time. Even gave us free matching mask from left over material. Don't expect super warm and chatty. But for great work definitely recommend. read more

The phone service alone of Elaina/Elena (Not sure of the spelling, but her attitude made me not care one way or another) made me not want to even attempt to call back. First, she cut me off because I didn't understand she said "Hi, this is Silvia's, instead of "Hi, this is Silvia", so I said "Hi Silvia" since that's what I heard on my end of the line, and she proceeds to cut me off with an unwelcoming, "let me stop you right there, first of all, I'm not Silvia." and proceeds to ask "Is this a sales call?" Which it indeed was not. In fact it was an inquiry, but that's neither here nor there. She proceeded to ask Silvia, which I'm assuming said no, and Elena/Elaina then hung up in my face. Although other reviews deemed this place as great, the phone service and therefore customer service turned me completely off. Won't ever do business here. read more

TL;DR: The dress was torn at the tailor's. Silvia didn't take responsibility, and was highly unprofessional and rude. I was referred to Silvia by a bridal boutique in Princeton. The initial interaction with Silvia was positive and professional (even though she isn't the warmest person, that wasn't a deal breaker initially). The dress was in pristine condition and just needed to have some minor adjustments and a bustle placed. During the second fitting, I noticed that there was a tear at the bottom of the dress in the fine silk fabric. I had re-checked the dress multiple times myself, along with the boutique sales rep, my parents, and Silvia herself (the initial fitting appointment is meant to identify any alterations and fixes that need to be made, including torn fabric). It stands to reason that the tear most likely occurred while the dress was in the possession of the tailor. When courteously asked how this happened, Silvia became incredibly defensive and rude, accusing me of not noticing it before, and refusing to acknowledge even the possibility that it could be her or her staff's fault. Mistakes happen all the time -- it's human to err, and no quality control process is ever perfect. But it's all about how you respond when things go awry. The right and honorable thing to do as a service professional (and human being) would be to trust the customer, and offer an apology and some sort of compensation (even if partial). Instead, what I got was an earful from Silvia, and a stressful confrontation that left me almost in tears. I had already paid the alteration fee, so there was no way for me to withhold payment, and Silvia refused to provide even a partial refund. The work was fine, but it's not nearly worth the negative experience. Wedding planning is hard enough -- I'd rather work with professionals who will treat me with respect and not add more stress to my life. read more

Silva is an absolute genius in her sewing artistry. I bought in a dress, at least 2 sizes too small from many years ago and she reworked the dress and added a material to it in such a way that it fit me better all of these years later than when I first purchased it. AND she expedited it for me so it was done in time for a cruise THE VERY NEXT DAY at a reasonable price!! She is an absolute dream and I will always come to her for all of my tailoring needs. I brought my dress to Silvia's far in advance of an event to have alterations done to a dress. She was recommended by a friend. I made the mistake of not trying it on again before the week of my brothers wedding. It was still too long . My mistake for not trying it on right after it was altered. Another bridesmaid in the party informed me she also brought her dress to Silvia for alterations. Her dress was too long after alterations , she came back but was told it was fine. This young lady accepted that ( I don't know why!) and went out and bought bigger heels. I spent the night holding my dress up, otherwise I would've stepped on it , which happened a few times. We have gone to this tailor a few times for gown alterations for weddings and they are always spot on! I recently had a gown alteration nightmare with another seamstress and Silvia's fixed everything that was wrong in one afternoon (day before we were leaving for the wedding) that the original seamstress could not seem to fix after 4 fittings! I felt it was necessary to write a review here because I see so many negative reviews. I brought my wedding dress to Silvia for alterations and she did an amazing job. She is very personal, professional and she knows what she is doing. I wanted her to alter the top part of my dress as it showed to much cleavage, by the time she was finished you honestly couldn't tell she made such an adjustment. It was stunning! She also hemmed the bottom and added bustles to the dress.I would highly recommend Silvia for any alterations. Notes to Brides: Bring your dress in advanced 4-6 months, have your wedding shoes ready for fittings. My wife and I brought a bunch of dry cleaning here all at once. A couple weeks later, I went to put on my suit for a wedding, and noticed that they had matched my suit jacket with one of my wife's pairs of pants. Granted, both were charcoal pinstripe, but the pinstripes are very different styles; the jacket is clearly a men's coat, and the pants are clearly women's pants. When we went back to the store, the owner said she'd look for the pants at the plant, and then would give us a call back in a few days. A week later, no phone call. We called the store and left a message, but never received a response. We returned to the store, and were told (somewhat rudely) that she didn't have them yet, but anyway, she would need the jacket to be able to match it to the pants and make sure she got the right ones and she would call us back in a few days. I naively turned over the coat to her, and awaited her call. Still nothing. Once again, we called the store and left a message, but never received a response. We returned to the store yet again, and the owner's husband was there. He was aware of the issue, told us the owner was out and wouldn't be back for a few days, but he would relay our concern to her and she would call us back. Right. We asked what would happen if they now couldn't find the pants OR the jacket, and he said something to the effect of, "we'd pay to replace the suit." Waited for the phone call that was of course never coming, and it of course never came. Since then, we've tried calling the store multiple times and left messages but never received a response. A year or so later, still no phone call, still no suit, still no make-good. I will not be returning. read more

Great experiences with Silvia. My first visit I needed a rush alteration on a formal gown for a black tie event. The dress was done, correctly, and on time. I just visited Silvia again today to pick up my Halloween costume. When I went in, it was at least 6 sizes too small. I left a yard of fabric with the dress. When I dropped off, I put the dress on - Silvia took one look and said ok, we'll call you when it's done. I was a little nervous since she hadn't made any marks or taken measurements, but the dress fits *perfectly* - even for a hideous costume. Both garments were done in a very timely manner and at a reasonable price. Very impressed with this shop!! Would recommend to anyone. read more

I've gone to Silvia's several times for tailoring. Her staff does a great job. However, I wonder if it is worth the trip. I live in a town near Metuchen. The owner, Silvia, is rude beyond belief. The last 2 times I went there she told me that my bathing suits would not be ready in 1 week and that I should know better. I'm a grown adult and do not need a lecture from her. The first time I took my suits there (same time of year); they were done in 3 days. Whether they were going to be ready in time for my trip is NOT the point. It's her attitude. The final straw for me was when my daughter (who lives in Metuchen) picked up her clothes. Upon pick up, she asked Silvia a question. Silvia responded with a nasty, "I don't have time for this!". Why people continue to go there is beyond me. A sign in her store should read; Come in for Very Good Tailoring but Beware of My Nasty Comments !!! read more

I'm thrown off by the negative Yelp reviews for Silvia's. So far I have been there for 2 fittings on my bridal gown, and I have been very happy with both Silvia and her work thus far. She clearly knows what she's doing and had great advice & suggestions for some of the finer details. I don't find her rude at all, rather she is up front and to the point which I like. Her pricing is also better than what was offered in the bridal shop where I purchased my gown. She did the alterations on my sister-in-law's bridal gown and my mom's mother-of-the-groom gown as well, and both came out beautiful. Overall, great experience with Silvia's! read more
