If you wanna avoid crowds at the other beaches in San Diego, you ought to check this beach out. You pay $10 to get in for parking but it's nice in that there isn't much people here. Another great thing that I like about this beach is that after you find a spot to park your car, you don't have to walk far before you're at the beach. So you don't have to carry all of your beach stuff and walk forever to find you a good spot to camp out. Definitely a hidden gem in San Diego. read more

Do yourself the favor and try Carlsbad. This place is not worth the price. The camp host are rude, not very helpful and definitely fit the persona of "state worker". Might as well set up a reservation at the DMV. You'll get the same customer service. As far as the campsites, they're very compact and you're in a highly crowded area on a black top parking lot. Also, this system for reservations is poor and this place makes people wait in line for a "first-come, first-served" opportunity to stay more than one night. If you're lucky, they'll make you wait three hours until they're "ready to deal with customers" to let you know there is no availability. Ultimately, the main reason for this review is the poor customer service. The elderly staff talk to you as if you're an idiot and are not interested in helping. They only seem to be interested telling you no for everything. Yes, this is a "place of "no". Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this place to anyone with a nice RV/Trailer. It is not worth the exorbitant cost. Also be prepared to spend $10-$20 for dumping your holding tanks. You will not be allowed to stay if your trailer is not equipped with a holding tank. We didn't even bother hooking up, there are bathrooms, but no shower. Also, the bathrooms are not lit with any light in the evening. So, ladies, be careful. I've seen some pretty sketchy people lurking around when we were there. Take a pass on Silver Strand. The view of the beautiful Pacific can be gleaned elsewhere. I recommend Carlsbad. Our last glamping trip...NOT EVER...but the last one we took! We love Coronado and it's one of the best beaches in San Diego, not to mention published in top ten ratings across the nation. This was our first time to Silver Strand. It is a clean and expansive beach and the campground spaces are right on the ocean, there were lots of beach games and kites due to families and good winds and it's dog friendly (never saw more dogs than here) These are the pluses! The spaces are VERY close together. It is quite NOISY from morning until night. On our trip someone had a drone that seemed to be hovering most of the time...not sure if I like this or not. Drones are novel, but I fear a sky filled with them one day! These are the minuses. We wanted to pick up some beer and took an Uber into town! It's kind of amusing being picked up at a campground by Uber, another novel experience. read more

I would usually go during sunset, wouldn't be staying there all day. We have been camping for years in State parks. As a rule the people who volunteer are helpful and kind. Not at this park. They have a draconian attitude which does not accomplish much except make the individual feel powerful. Puts a damper on the beginning of your vacation. I'm downgrading from a 5 to 3 based on our stay this past week. This is our 3rd year here and apparently there was a management or ownership change in the last 12 months. Our friends had a spot in the last section, the 400's and on their 3rd day their row lost power. Of course you take your complaints to the camp host who argued with our friends that they were made aware that power was lost when they checked in which was so not the case. Camp host continued arguing and was not remotely willing to help to find any solutions. Discount for the inconvenience? Ya NO. We saw other glampers who had extension cords connect to power towers not in use as the alternative was to move spots EVERY DAY. Our other friends had to work the day of check in and were unable go check in until the following morning. The camp host had the nerve to tell them that they were "lucky" their spot wasnt given away as they apparently reserve the right to sell your spot if you fail to check in. Ummm...isnt this why we pay ahead to RESERVE your spot? The camp hosts ride around in their golf carts in the mornings with scouls on their faces. I say "good morning" and they look at me as if I flipped them off. They're busy looking for offenders so if your tow vehicle is slightly over the dividing line... The large street lights are turned off around 9:30 pm and it gets super dark and the only lights are from the power towers which are useless. All you can hear is the ocean breeze so someone sneaking up on you is a real fear. It's so dark out and if you're inside your camper with the AC on you cant hear or see anyone coming into your site. Of course, our friends forgot to lock their bikes which were stolen. We also heard that someone in another site had their bbq stolen so lock EVERYTHING!! read more

I hadn't been here since I was a kid and was so excited to finally take my own trailer here. It looked exactly the same as I remembered (a big parking lot) but now they have hooks up which I thought was a nice addition. Unfortunately, my love for this place was quickly replaced. The campsites are super tiny, so if you're not in the front row, you feel like you're right on top of your neighbors, all four of them. Also, beware of the hook ups. We were threatened by a ranger that we had to fix our drip or we would be kicked out. When we hooked up to fresh water, there was a SLIGHT drip where the hose connected to the tank. We ended up filling up with fresh water and just disconnecting the hose, however, upon looking around, 3 out of every 5 rv's were dripping from their hookup, or air conditioner, but we were the only ones that were told we had to fix or leave. Also, they are super strict about the 10 o'clock quiet time, my two friends and I were standing next to their rv (while they were packing up cuz they had to leave super early in the morning) and a camp host came out in her pajamas to tell us we were too loud. Guess that meant it was bed time. As others mentioned, if your tow vehicle isn't physically attached to your rv when you pull in, you will pay an extra $10 even if it will fit in your spot that you already paid for. Needless to say, by the last day of our trip i could not wait to get out of there. So, if you're looking to sit on the beach and read a book while you're here, great, its probably the place for you, but if you wanna enjoy your time by letting your hair down, drinking some cocktails and listening to some tunes, try another campground! read more

Lock your stuff up at night. Transients stroll through and steal bikes. My mountain bike was stolen from inside my camp last night. When I reported it, the park employees and Ranger said this happens often and the thieves are known to even cut locks off. We actually had a great time camping at this park the last four nights, but unfortunately it was ruined by theft on our last night. The park should at a minimum let people know about this theft problem so they can put their valuables away at night. read more

Uptight and rude staff. Overnight camping spaces are WAY too small. Tank pump service for campers costs $20 and they like to pump your neighbors shit right during breakfast time. Lady at the front check in "I'll insert name here later" lost her shit in the first minute during check in because my fully registered, California DMV plated and inspected golf cart was missing its windshield. Started yelling at me about the laws and I better not drive it. It's obvious they hate any type of vehicle here that is not a car or truck. 1. Get a beach front space and register 4 months in advance. 2. Tell the lady up front to take her morning medications or find a new job that she actually likes. 3. Even if you are experienced at backing. You need 2 loud people to help you park. 4. Positives. Free waste dump when you leave. 5. Was told you cannot put any fresh water on the ground????? Not sure if they tarp the place when it rains. But I guess they don't want you using your camper outside faucet. read more

This is a large beach located right across from Loews Coronado. Yes, there's the tunnel which you can drive across. If you are traveling Northbound, that's pretty much how you can get off. If not, then you'll have to travel another mile and make a U E. How I usually rank my beaches, I consider the parking fees (Or ways to get out of one), how gorgeous the view is, and how clean the beach is, and how clean the bathrooms are. Since I don't really swim out in the water, I don't consider the showers, even though they have a spray outside by the bathrooms here. Parking: No ways to get around it, there is nothing near by. As others have said, you'll have to pay (I believe $15) or unless you're a guest at the Loews. View: Not drop dead gorgeous, but the sunset was nice here. Clean: Not the cleanest nor the dirtiest I've seen. Bathrooms: There was toilet paper, it didn't smell and fared better than most other beaches. (There are also just changing stalls with no toilets and sinks) However, there wasn't too many of these unisex stalls available. I was here for the Ragnar San Diego Celebration that ended here. I've been to Loews awhile back but never visited this beach but it was sure nice to finally sink my toes here past weekend. read more

Love Silver Strand State Beach, but this past week there was very disappointing. There where 4 e-bikes stolen, including one of our e-bikes and someone else's generator. We had two e-bikes locked to our RV and at 4am I heard the snap of the bolt cutters and they took one of our e-bikes. Talking with the local police, it is happening more and more and every night. The volunteers where no help and said we needed to wait until the state park employee comes in at 830am, then the local police came to us about 11am. I should have known something was questionable when I walked by the camp host area and the park golf cart that the volunteers ride around in was chained by all tires and the steering wheel at 7am. They should have cameras and someone who patrols all night to keep it safe for all. read more

This is my go-to bike path for the last 7 years. San Diego is in desperate need of a bike path with some length. You get a mix of tourists, families, weekend warriors to time trial triathletes riding here. It's kept up well with some nice scenery. A few nice places to stop. It's a gamble here most days. It could be over saturated by casuals not paying attention not keeping in the lane to some heavy winds from both sides. I just ride out about 10 miles where you have to cut over on some streets for a little while. The South Bay Salt Works at the end is visually stunning. The beach is pretty nice too. You have to pay to park. Lots of RV campers here. Can get overrun in the summer. Some nice sunsets with a cool breeze. Plan ahead and have fun! read more

It's tightly packed but the location is amazing. Definitely bring a bike to get around. Also, there are no fire pits on the sea side, only bay side. Bring a fire pit. We were staying at the Loews Resort directly across the street. They made it really easy to reach the beach with a tunnel beneath the street. If you drive there is a large parking lot as well as an RV lot. It's your average beach with sand and ocean waves. The resort has a stand with complimentary beach chairs and towels for guests. It's a nice convenience. The naval training area is right next to it. We didn't see the sign during our nice morning beach walk. Luckily the lady was very pleasant with us pointing out the fact we were on military grounds. Oops! When you don't live near the ocean, a walk with the sand in your toes puts a smile on my face. read more

We have a state parking pass for parks so you're able to use that here at Silver Strand. The beach is beautiful and it's kind of a trek of you take the Coronado Bridge to come here. Traffic thru downtown Coronado is miserable especially during the summer. Friends drove their RV down and stayed for a few nights in the RV park here at Silver Strand. I forgot the parking pass the first day so I had to pay the $10 fee. No biggie. If you stay overnight though I believe the fee is more. The RV park is large but I agree with others that the spaces are kinda close together. Friends strategically reserved a corner space so that there was more room (no one to the right or to the back). It was a great space as there was a decent view of the ocean from that space. My one gripe was on the 2nd visit. I contemplated spending the night as friend said it would be an additional $10 (even with a parking pass). When you drive into the RV park, there's a small office run by rangers/volunteers (?). The first visit no one stopped me as I knew the parking space # my friends were at. The 2nd visit an older gentleman rudely stopped me like a cop pulling someone over for a citation. He asked if I was spending the night and I said I wasn't sure. He said it would be $35 dollars. I showed him my parking pass and he said that wouldn't work whatsoever for an overnight stay. I said I was still thinking about the overnight and he badgered me that I should pay the $35 up front or they will put a ticket on my car. I asked how long I could stay without violation and he said 9p BUT they are closed before then so I'll probably get a ticket anyways. I politely declined and drove to my friends space. My friends were confused about the $35. They were told $10 for a car that would be just parked in front of their RV. Long story short, we walked to the office later that day and saw $10 for additional car on their price sign. Friend walked up to a nice lady behind the window and sure as heck, she said yup, it's $10 which she charged to friend's account. So be careful. I liked the many RV neighbors that would stop by to say hello to us and our dogs. People seemed generally pleasant and happy. We found many sand dollars at the beach. Others would wake up early morning to go hunting for these shells and it was fun watching the excitement of kids/adults. NOTE: we stumbled across TWO sting rays on the beach. I didn't realize how big these things get and a fisherman told us to always SHUFFLE when we go into the water. Overall, it's a nice beach with lots of parking. I'd return if friends were back with the RV or if I was in the area. read more

Silver strand state beach is awesome water is always warm if you book a campsite you should know winner hours close the gates at 7 pm, and summer time it closes gates at 8pm. Do you will not be able to get in or out after. The people who camp at this side are always very friendly and willing to help each other they have Fire pits so that you can have campfire for making smores for the kids. The dump site for RV's is on a timer so make sure You are ready to go but it does give enough time if you have done it before. They do allow dogs but not actually on the beach part so feel free to bring Fido along. But make sure to bring a 6'ft leash this is their requirements and there is a dog beach about a mile and a 1/2 away where they do not have to have a leash and it is awesome. read more

Gorgeous beach connecting Imperial Beach to Coronado Island. The views are amazing, all the way to mexico on one side and up to La Jolla on the other. It is a long skinny strip of beach on the side of the highway and more for a quick stop then spending a day at. CYCLING DOWN THE COAST TO NOWHERE Okay, not really "nowhere", but when you see nothing but a stretch of water and sand it definitely feels like "nowhere". This beach is a bit windier but much quieter. Sand is soft, waters are wavy, and the air is fresh but salty. There's usually a lot of people riding bikes, walking, and strolling the 25-mile loop. Love cycling In the area. I've been here a few times, to get away from the busy beach crowds. This place still can get packed with locals from South Bay or Coronado but there's plenty of beach property to spread out. This place is also the finish line for SoCal Ragner. It's an open space! Followers, have you ever had one of those days you just want to clear your mind?! I did. Last week was a tough week for me - awkward crossings with the X that you still love. And I wanted to start the 4-day weekend on a good one instead of a sad one. Friday early afternoon nobody was around, just me and my bike, and the sunshine. What better place to cycle on a bike with 27 gears and speed without limitations or fear of hitting anything. The goal was to cycle the 25 mile loop but it was scorching hot and humid AND in spandex and a helmet, it was not the business! Don't forget to take in the view! read more

I've got no idea how Silver Strand is for camping, but for running, it's fabulous. This is a long, flat, sandy beach. Think Florida panhandle. It runs from Navy Seal Training facilities in Coronado all the way down to the Imperial Beach pier. And the sand is the whitest I've seen in California. And if you get there early enough on a Saturday or Sunday, there are no people. It's the closest to a deserted beach I've found in San Diego. More deserted than Black's Beach in La Jolla. No joggers. No surfers. And until the RV crowd starts moving around, no body. Just you and the sand. And the sand dollars. The only downside is the admission fee. read more

Warning, they close the gates and then chain and padlock them at 7p, 8p or 9p depending on the time of year. You will be locked in or out for the rest of the evening. I did not feel safe with it, I do not understand how this is even legal. If you come through the website you will eventually find this information printed there. This information should be given in the same spot on the website that they say check in is at 2 p.m. but it's not. Of course the beach is beautiful and worth 5 Stars. This Campground is little more than a blacktop parking lot in the middle of nowhere. The strip of beach is right on the highway so you will listen to traffic day and night. For as expensive as it is to stay here, combined with the limited accomodations and isolation, there are other places to camp that are way better. This campground has overly controlling elderly hosts, one guy named Mike was very full of hostility for some reason. He was barking at the people next to us about their fire pit being too close to the sand. Your fire pit must be on the blacktop at all times. There is very limited space if you have a big rig, you might not be able to put out your awning out and you definitely will not see the beach unless you have beachfront site in the summer. This campground is not very dog friendly; Mike told the people across from us dogs must stay on the blacktop at all times. Once it gets dark there are no lights anywhere, not even in the bathrooms or showers. This area is a pitch black and scary at night. I did ask Mike, which is how I got his name, why did they lock the gates at night and instead of just explaining in a normal tone, his face got beet-red, and he angrily barked at me, spitting on my face as he did so. Also, he never actually answered the question, so I am still not sure why people need to be locked in all night long. We are out there camping on vacation, to have FUN and there is no call for someone to get this upset over a simple question, it doesn't even make sense! read more

Review is for RV Campground. This is basically a parking lot with pretty large spots and hook ups. All RVs are supposed to be backed in but we saw a lot that weren't. We have a 38 foot toy hauler and very large truck. There was enough room for two of us and two dogs to sit outside but any more and it would have been cramped. Fire pits allowed in your site which is great since the beach pits are snagged pretty early in the morning. Lots of kids of all ages here so it's great for families. Bring bikes to use around campground or bike path on the bayside. There is an underground tunnel to the bayside which leads to a bike path that goes to Coronado (north) or Imperial Beach (south). Our dogs were bored since they are not used to being tied up and just 6ft at that. However, there is an off leash dog beach about 3 miles north in Coronado by Hotel Del Coronado. Spots 139, 237 or 333 appear to have the largest space available (non handicapped). read more

Me and my wife have been camping over32 years shortly after the campsite was established, in the early days there was no reservations, first come first served. They had no hookups for water or power. Fast forward, the campground was reconstructed, water and power added and a new dump station added. Reserve America too over reservations. All major holidays are a sellout and booking out 7 months is very competitive. A great bunch of SoCal folks frequent so much long time friendships are made. read more

Oh, I could go on and on! We were there December 3rd-6th, tractor work was going on to prepare for the winter rains, front row view was being blocked. Not the best time of the year to go there. Driving around Coronado to find a less crowded beach and we stumbled upon Silver Strand State Beach. It was way less crowded than others we drove past so we decided to post up here for the afternoon. My goal of being at a beach in SD/Coronado? To veg the F out, and that's exactly what I did. Sure, I walked down to the shore, stuck my feet in the water, but that was it. I wanted to relax! My last day of vacation and I just wanted to chill. So back to my beach blanket I went, and laid out for the couple hours we were there and even got a good nap in. The weather was perfect. Yes, it was windy but it felt good. My friend and their kids got lots of ocean time in and I was able to relax. Nothing like laying out on a nice beach and just listening to the sound of the ocean. Stopped here since we all thought this was the meet up for the Silver Strand run. Well it was for the half mara and not the 5K. The parking entrance is right off the freeway and there were several lots available. We ended up asking this lady for info and she advised us to park. I went to use the restroom and there were a couple of unisex stalls and some bathrooms on the opposite side. To me, with the amount of parking spaces and as long as this beach is - just wasn't adequate. I did notice that there wasn't any shade or grassy areas, but we were only in one part of the parking lot. We ended up leaving since it wasn't the right place for our run. Would love to come back to actually walk around and see the beach in its entirety. read more
