After a long day of laying out on a beach on the shores of Silver Lake, we were headed back to the Silver Lake State Park campground when my friends and I decided that we could really go for some ice cream! Two of my friends in the group are vegan, so we decided on Silver Scoops because we had seen that they had vegan options and - bonus! - it was on our way back! The Silver Scoops establishment is located in a street filled with touristy shops and entertainment, with a little amusement park right down the street too, which was very interesting! The line wasn't too bad when we showed up and it gave us time to peruse the menu while we waited. There are so many delicious options here - for both food and ice cream! It was a shame we had just eaten while on the beach, so I wasn't hungry enough to try any of their yummy-looking food, but ice cream was the perfect thing to round out my meal and this relaxing, hot day! I was getting a little stressed trying to narrow down what I wanted to get in terms of ice cream, since there were so many delicious options, when I saw they had a sign at the ordering counter for DOLE WHIP! Listen, I know that might've been anticlimactic, because instead of trying one of their many ice cream offerings, I instead go with one that is more universally made?? But if you're like me and live in Michigan, you know that there aren't THAT many places to get Dole Whip, so if you love it as much as I do, you order it everywhere it's offered, no ifs ands or buts! As a compromise though, I got BOTH the Dole Whip and a Boston Cooler shake (Vernors and vegan vanilla ice cream blended together) and BOTH WERE ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! If I'm ever in the Silver Lake area again, I will definitely be hitting up Silver Scoops again to try one of their many other flavors (plus another scoop of Dole Whip of course...:P)! read more

Barely survived an ambush at the Fox Farm. I wasn't checking my 6 and five mouth breathers all without masks flanked us. After slaying them with our extensive CDC buzzfacts, we built a simple yet mandatory shrine to Whitmer The All Knowing, praising Her majesty for another swift victory against the evil orange man and his infected hordes. Moving on, Bubs scouted a place for the night, and we made our way into downtown Silver Lake to replenish our N95 supplies and restock on food and gear. "Think they got any decent ice cream around here?", Bubs asked me, quickly kissing and then stowing away a picture of Anthony Fauci he kept in his wallet at all times, a neurotic luck charm of some sort. "Fat chance," I scoffed "everything dairy from here to Muskegon has the COVID my friend. You'd be lucky to find a gallon of -" I was abruptly cut off by a blinding, shimmering light in the black of the night piercing at us. Shielding my eyes, I made out the slick metal words "SILVER SCOOPS" reflecting the lights of the strip in my glimmering eye. The less good news is, I ordered only the fried pickles for lunch (hey, it's vacation) and they were way too salty. Secondly, the ranch wasn't nearly as worthy as "the" accompaniment for this... horseradish sauce. Even so, the ranch tasted bottled. This place looks like just a Dairy Queen knockoff from the road, and the ice cream is fantastic (try the flurries - they have some amazing ones!) but it actually has really great food! The coconut shrimp is a must try, and the lake perch is right up there with a good sit-down restaurant. Outdoor seating is a bit iffy because of the weather, but if you go around dinner hour, you get to watch all of the ORVs coming on and off the dunes as you eat, and that is a lot of fun. Makes for interesting viewing during a meal. The wait can be a little while, but it is definitely worth it! read more

A great walk up place with outstanding service and menu. The emphasis is in ice cream, treats, slushies and smoothies, but also has some non-dairy options. Other snacks include corn dog bites, veggie wraps, sandwiches, and you have to try the local cuisine which is deep fried asparagus. We went here because we got some free scoops with our hotel package--and I am glad we did. First the service was very friendly. Young kids but were very respectful. Second, the ice cream was delicious. But the real winner here: FRIED ASPARAGUS. you must get this! The asparagus was tender but not mealy, the batter was homemade and tasty. Fantastic food! Before Silver Scoops opened there were no other good options in town. SLSD is not know for its food but Silver Scoops is a game changer! Great menu with fresh and tasty options. Any sandwich can be turned into a beautiful salad. Everything is made with love and the friendly owners work very hard alongside the seasonal help. Wanted water to drink, the only option was a $3 bottle of water and spoken 'at me' like I was a criminal for requesting water. Overall not worth the prices or time. The croissant sandwiches were a perfect breakfast, the veggie sandwich was absolutely amazing, and they have a giant selection of ice cream that can't be beat! My husband and I stopped to grab lunch here because we saw that they had some vegan options (for ice cream, too!). We were very disappointed with the service from start to finish. The girl who took our order seemed really disoriented and did not take our order correctly, so we had to return and ask for someone else's help. All of their employees were high school students -- they did not seem to have any rhyme or rhythm to how they were preparing orders and delivering to customers. Each of our items came out one at a time, yet my sundae was already melting when I received it, our "veg out" sandwiches were a mess, and the onion rings were cold and salty. The food was grossly overpriced (esp. the sandwiches) and did not uphold any standard. I'm giving two stars because I'm so happy that a little town like this opens its arms to offer vegan options, but our experience was a total bust. read more

We really like this place and the ice cream is wonderful, it's clean, and the owners are really nice. The only downsides ate that they only have a port-a-potty for restrooms and the last few times we've been here, the ice cream has been so soft and melted that it's been a mess to eat and takes away from the enjoyment of the experience. If they were to fix these two things, it would definitely be a four or 5 star rating! read more

Terrible Terrible Terrible! I learned more about this place than I wanted. The owner was there for the 1st time and the high school kids he had working there were annoyed with him and being disrespectful as he tried to run a register and take orders. One of us ordered a tin roof sundae or something like that straight from the menu. A heated discussion occurred between the employees as to how to make it. After we left one of my sons asked us, "so was that uncomfortable or was it just me?" We all agreed it was very odd. I couldn't find them on the internet to get an address so I think they are probably new. Bad service and bad product, go quick if you want to because I don't think they'll be around long. read more
