I really enjoyed dining here with my family. The elderly gentleman who served us was incredibly sweet and attentive. This may be his business, which would explain the pride he seemed to take in making sure we had a great experience. We ordered the Mongolian beef, shrimp egg foo young, and shrimp fried rice, and everything was delicious. The portions were generous, the food was flavorful, and the prices were very reasonable. Great food, excellent service, a cozy atmosphere, and prices that don't break the bank, what more could you ask for? We'll definitely be back! read more

As an Asian and lifelong lover of Chinese food, and as a once-frequent (now former) customer of Silver Lake, I experienced an absolute failure of service. I placed a takeout order, only to discover when I arrived that it had been prepared incorrectly. When I called to explain, the manager Kevin insisted the mistake was mine and hesitated to correct it. After driving back to have it fixed, I was met with a cold reception, handed my dish without apology, and left with no acknowledgment of the inconvenience. From what I was told, Kevin reports to Jason and Florence (the actual owners, who were on vacation). Still, I can't imagine this is the standard of service they would condone. For a customer who has supported this restaurant for years, this was a disappointing and dismissive experience. Silver Lake has lost someone who was once a loyal regular. read more

Everything was drenched in oil and the meat was fatty and gross. Also, we ordered orange chicken and pretty sure they gave us pork instead. Tried this place tonight and instantly regretted it. The BBQ pork pineapple fried rice came with a mystery odor and a flavor so strange it should've come with a warning label. Totally inedible. The garlic green beans? More like onions with a side of green beans. I thought I was playing it safe with simple dishes--turns out the real safe choice would've been eating at home. No wonton in the carryout yang chow wonton soup tonight. If they're out of a key ingredient, they shouldn't take the order

We were long time customers, at least 15 years, but not anymore after tonight. We ordered 1 boba tea with our meal and they sent and charged us for 12. We called and they said they'd credit it us for the extra 11. Simple enough. Of course, we opened a couple more over the next hour for other's in the house to try and stored the rest of the fridge, planning to send some home with a friend and keep another couple for tomorrow. THEN, as we were finishing up our meal, the manager/boss called back asking us to pack up the drinks so their driver could come pick them up. Bizarre and rude, no? Will they trash the drinks? Try to resell them? Have they sold us pre-sold food? As I said, we've been customers for 15 years so they should know we weren't trying to dupe them for free drinks. Anyway, it felt like they were punishing us for their mistake. Seems like they could've let well enough alone. It was just an hour ago, we haven't received our refund yet. AND: as I write this they called a third time to say we only returned 8 so they wanted to refund only four. Really disappointing and frustrating, especially because my mother with stage 4 cancer is the one fielding these calls. Not classy, Silver Lake. The food was only ever just fine, so it's a good enough reason for us to shop around for a new place to eat when we're looking to treat ourselves on a Friday night. read more

I usually order to-go and love their food! It is hard to find a Chinese restaurant with celiac-safe food that actually tastes delicious! My husband orders off the regular menu and has a few favorites, including the Mongolian Beef, while I order from the Healthy/gluten-free section. I am glad they are in our neighborhood. read more

Customer service with the host was okay at best. He seemed like a high school student. Ordered carry out in person and waited about 15 minutes. While waiting that staff member was laughing and passing gas, which we were underwhelmed by since call-in/mobile orders were just a few feet away. It brought some relief he wasn't in the kitchen. Our food came from the back and included two fortune cookies and some soy sauce. Be sure to ask for napkins, utensils and such if you need it. Anywho, the sesame chicken was good and came with a side of white rice. There are no substitutes for fried rice so we ordered a small spicy fried rice. For 1. It was not spicy, it was basic fried rice, with chicken and shrimp. The only thing spicy on there was the label they put on the lid. The rice was hot and some pieces of the shrimp were cold. As if the meal was reheated in a microwave. It was 30 minutes before closing, so I figured I'd call in the morning to advise. An older gentleman answered and was unnerved. I started by telling him my order was incorrect. He said there's nothing they could do about it not being spicy and wont warrant a credit. That's fine. I began to tell him about the shrimp. I was shocked at how he reacted. He was upset as if I would call him and make these accusations up. He said ask for hot sauce next time. Having ordered this meal before, I know it was not "spicy fried rice". We didn't end up taking another bite of the rice because of the shrimp. He hung up the phone on me and told me to bring the rice in. Now why would I do that? I can't get a credit and he didn't want to remake it so what's the point? I wish my shrimp was as hot and rice was as spicy as his attitude. I guess I got what I asked for and should clarify that I want my food hot and spicy. ABSOLUTELY the worst excuse for Chinese/Cantonese food I have ever had. Fried rice that was bland and soaked in grease. Egg rolls greasy and with no taste. Potstickers that were as if someone wrapped mystery meat (honestly, I couldn't place it) in a pancake. Not the thin wrapping, just heavy dough. So salty and the wonton itself was weird tasting. Then today and my last visit. I've asked for SPICY fried rice. Both times I am getting normal fried rice... hopefully there isn't a p4ice difference? But I am 100% eating normal fried rice which is frustrating me. Their dining still isn't open either which is lame. If I have one more bad visit here I'll be done with it honestly. I ordered the sesame chicken for take-out. It was horrible! It came with 2 pieces of what resembles broccoli and a sliver of what I am assuming is a carrot. I just ordered chicken chop suey which I have ordered here numerous times. Unfortunately tonight's order was inedible. It was more like a soup that had been prepared two days earlier. I never new that sprouts could be turned into mush along with the napa. Plenty of chicken but very few pe, pods, carrots, celery and not a single water chestnut to at least give some chrunch. I pulled up to the spot after ordering online for the first time ever... and the service was nice they were friendly. I order the orange chicken with chicken fried rice lunch combo, first of all in my opinion the rice had little to no chicken in it, the rice had no flavor at all, the orange chicken had no orange taste to it and was not spicy at all... besides the price i guess you do get for what you pay. We've gotten food from here (Elgin location) for years & it's always been good!Tonight (12/06) was definitely an anomaly for parts of it. Both the egg rolls & teriyaki chicken sticks were burnt beyond eating! Most unlike them. Will try there again as we've always enjoyed it. The folks who run this place are nice people, and they have a really good waitstaff. The menu is a mixed bag. It's aimed at a purely occidental clientele with few traditional recipes, but lots of American favorites from the 1960's. It took me some time to find the handful of dishes they do well. But they do a respectable shrimp and lobster sauce, and a few other solid savory dishes. I often find myself there when the staff is having their meal well before the evening rush. The staff food looks so much better and more authentic than what's on the menu. I wish I could eat with the staff, because these guys obviously can cook. Avoid the BBQ-Pork appetizer. The candy sugar sauce will instantly cause diabetes, and isn't particularly tasty. The pork would be infinitely better without the sauce or with just a hint of Hoisin instead. read more

Silver Lake - Elgin has gone down hill, chicken with pea pods had brown carrots and the chicken was grey and white rice was not delivered - uneatable! Pan Fried Noodles had at least 1/4 cup oil. As I was walking in the door, the waiter is picking his nose ! I stated to him that "You should not do that," and he laughs . I was happy that I was placing a To-Go order. I started to place my order, and the telephone begins to ring. The cashier asked me to hold on, and I am thinking that he is going to ask the caller to hold and continue with my order. Not at all, he starts to take the caller's request. I simply turned around and walked out of the restaurant.
