I ordered the Smashburger because the server told me it was the best burger in town. It may have been the best burger in town because I have nothing to compare it to, but it was not good. It was the special for the day. It was $15 for the burger and fries. I ordered it without onions. It came with a lot of shredded lettuce and sauce between the bottom bun and the burger. I was not a fan of the amount of sauce that came with this burger. The burger itself did not have any flavor. It looked like there was some pepper in the meat, but I could not taste anything. The brioche bun disintegrated in my mouth after each bite. My experience with a bun like this is it was either frozen or it is stale. Not sure why the bun was bad since it was their special that day. I chose poorly with a burger. Every other time I went, I got the Yakisoba noodles with short rib ribs. The noodles with the short ribs are the best in town and probably the best in Northwest Indiana.

I had always wanted to go there and am very happy to say that I totally enjoyed the visit. While there, we visited a lot of places and ate most meals out. Ironwood was one of them. Most of you know that I have serious OCD when it comes to craft beer. I like to try new breweries, always rate my suds on Untappd, and rarely drink beers that I have already had, unless there are no other options. So, of course I was going to try the breweries in Valparaiso. This one just happened to be owned by one of my wife's college friends. The brewery is in a nice little building. I'm sure it was probably a home before the remodel. It has ample parking in the back next to a small little patch of woods, probably about the size of a normal backyard. There were birds all over the trees, reminding me that I had made the stupid decision to leave my camera in San Antonio. My eyes immediately fell on the flight boards. They are set up with 9 spaces so that they can easily match the beer to a number, as they had nine choices to choose from. I asked for all nine to be on one, and she let me have them half-filled. I love beer, but never want to feel buzzed, if I plan to drive. In this situation, I just wanted to taste them. I liked all of the beers here. My two favorites were the Triple XXX Belgian Triple and the Cricket IPA. I also really liked Goliath's Demise barleywine. Barleywines in general are not my favorites, usually because they are not fresh. This one was fresh and not cloyingly sweet. My wife, as most of you know, is not a beer drinker- AT ALL. For that reason, we left after I finished the flight and a couple of small glasses of my two favorites. The atmosphere was very cozy. The local patrons who came in were all very friendly. One lady at the bar spoke with us as if we were there with her every day. The owner's husband came in and placed a plate with smoked salmon and crackers on the bar for everyone. And, most notably, there was not a TV in sight! Imagine, a place to cozily sit and converse with fellow beer drinkers without sports blasting in your ears!

Friends! You have to stop in and have a meal at this very nice spot!…read more It has been in Mokena, IL for 2 years. We went early afternoon on a weekday, so there was no wait, and the place was almost empty. The water came in an adorable carafe, with 6 oz "shot glasses". I found it to be so cute! And it was just enough water for sipping. It was iced cold. I believe we were just thirst and drank it all, lol. Free to the table- House Chips and Salsa. Simple and straight to the point. Ok, to the good stuff! Starters/App: We ordered a "Salsa Flight". It is just what it sounds like, a flight of assorted salsas. There were 6. Great for sharing, not big portions. It ranged from sweet, smokey, fruity, savory, to spicy baby! Of course it came with tortilla chips. So, so good! We also ordered Birria Egg Rolls. Friends!!! Delightfully yummers! Crisp on the outside, cheesy and meaty inside. The cooks were creating magical bites for me this day. lol Very good bites. I ordered a Pina-Colada Margarita. This sip was DELICIOUSNESS. Omg! Like....fresh, and powerful, yet well balanced. TASTY SIPS FRIENDS! I ordered what was like a Taco/loaded steak potato with all the trimmings (cheese, steak pico, sour cream). That is what came on it. There were other option of meats. Because I was so focused, I don't even recall what my date ate. HA! But I will say that my potato was not the best. It was over and under cooked. You are probably wondering like "HOW IS THAT"? Well, the potato was not cooked all the way through(hard pieces), but it was burnt at the bottom of the potato (images to come). That was disappointing. The starters/apps were so tasty, I ended up not finishing the potato, but I was saddened that they served the potato knowing the shape it was in. The meat and cheese and such couldn't even hide it once you moved the toppings to the side. Now, don't let my unhappy potato stop you from checking this place out. I am looking forward to bring my family back, and a few friends. If off sips and chips alone, its a place to get familiar with. Finally had a chance, and I will return. As always, you don't have to take my word for it, go get you some!

However, the service was sub par as our waitress seemed to steer clear of our table yet she mad sure to check on all of her other tables frequently. We even had to ask other servers and busser if they could track her down for us. The icing on the cake was that they ran out of water cups and so now 6 of us are drinking out of the water pitcher that they left at the table. When we asked if we could have more cups we were told that they were out of them, yet drinks continued to be made at the bar (in cups). We would have even taken paper cups instead of drinking from the same water pitcher. It was just an overall disappointing experience for it to be my first time. The only positives were the women and gentleman in the front greeting and seating and the young men who brought the food out to the table and cleared the table. I really want to change my rating for just the food and certain individuals but I just cannot get around 6 different peoples lips on the same water pitcher and nor form of compensation for the inconvenience (not looking for money off but at least a complimentary bottle of water or something). But because of the service and lack of awareness of your customers all sharing a single water pitcher and not even checking in to see if we needed anything or if we were even enjoying the food is just unacceptable.

So I've been hanging out a bit in small town America lately. Luckily I've been able to discover…read moresome really good eats in some of these small towns. The Hangar is in a town of about 550 people. I have that many in my condo building. But what they lack in people they do pretty dam good in good places to grab a good bite. The Hangar is one of them. It looks like they poured a few bucks in this place. the decor is pretty nice and very rural. They know their demographic. Even the bathroom are pretty cool and interesting looking with keg urinals. Now I know that sounds nasty but I usually look for cleanliness and detail like quality of napkins etc. Anyone who is concerned with their restrooms is concerned with the details. The dining area is really nice and spacious wood on metal with an old bank vault for a kitchen door. There is also a pretty spacious patio to eat and drink on. Parking! Yes I never get used to that. But being a a small town i suppose they have plenty for which I am grateful. When they serve you get get your utensil set-up in this cools little paper bag sleeve. It's clean and likely pretty hygienic. The all around quality of non-food items is pretty good. The service is excellent. The staff very friendly and our server a good looking woman was on point and sincerely friendly. I am remiss I did not get her name as she deserves a shout out! The grub? Pretty damn good. My buddy had their burger and believe me he is a critic in a good way, he knows his stuff. Their fries are thick cut steak fries, the best kind. He really enjoyed the burger and that's saying something as he is in the business. I had an excellent hand-breaded pork tenderloin sandwich which was fried just right not too crisp and not soggy. A damn good sandy. A side of their BBQ I was good to go. My side of potato salad was righteous too. It seems more and more I run across small town America that has upped their game comparable to any big city in quality and atmosphere. They also have an edge on the price points. With general lower overhead they can be more reasonable I suppose. That said, people still have to make a living so please tip graciously when you can. I would definitely take a ride back here from the city. I may have to try a weekend which i bet is jamming'.
