Silo City Boom Day April 6, 2013

We went for the April 2013 Boom Day Party - when the ice boom gets taken down. They had opened the entire place up, you can walk freely there, go most anywhere, see whats inside many of the buildings etc. It was great. Relaxed environment, nice people, nice history lesson, great party. Band, Beer, Food Trucks (I think all Bflo Food Trucks made a showing). Make a plan now to put this in your Bucket List for 2014. Its worth it. Especially if you have as nice a day as today!

Silo City vertical tour

Took the silo city vertical tour last night and it was great. For 2.5 hours we learned everything about the silos and some other interesting Buffalo history for our excellent guide Larry who was not only very knowledgeable but very passionate about the campus and our city. There are lots of stairs, rust and dust so if you have dust issues, don't like climbing stairs or are afraid of heights then maybe take the ground tour instead but it was great.

Did the silo city vertical tour which had us going to the tippy top of the American and Perot silos. The tour guides (from Explore Buffalo) were absolutely brilliant. You can tell their passion (heck they are volunteers) for the local area is huge by how they speak about it. You start learning about the history of the silos and why they were even built in the first place, then you make the climb up to the top. The views are phenomenal (I bet even on a miserable day it would be excellent for moody photos) and the guides never make you feel rushed. Yes there is one point where you have to go backwards down some stairs, but it's about 10 or so and again--- there is no "hurry hurry hurry" vibe at all. Put it this way, I would not be worried about my mom doing it! Highly recommend this tour-- Buffalo born and learned so many new things about my hometown. Makes me even prouder to be from here.

We came by with some lifelong locals for poetry, art installations, and live music one evening and had a good time, even if we feared parts of the structure could fall at any time. Only restroom for is a single portapotty and there aren't many signs, just a caretaker.

You need to check this place out if you are into iconic or historic Buffalo sites. I recently took the Silo City Grounded Tour through explorebuffalo.com to first get myself acquainted with the basics of Silo City. It is a really cool area to just walk around and explore. If you want to just stop by the site and walk around a little bit they hold Silo City Fleas on many (but not all) Sunday afternoons during warmer months. The Flea Market is free to enter and is held right in the middle of the Silo City. While the Flea Market itself is small and is nothing special it is still really cool to come here and walk around to explore a bit. Honestly, when you are here you can feel the history all around you. Ever since taking the Silo City Grounded Tour I've been anticipating doing the Silo City Vertical Tour where you actually go right up into the grain elevators. There are lots of other cool events that are held here as well. Our tour guide kept alluding to a popular summer night time art festival held here called City of Night. This event sounded like a really cool experience, though I've yet to experience it myself. On our tour we also checked out the Silo City Rocks project. Silo City Rocks is an indoor and outdoor rock climbing gym currently being constructed in one of the grain elevator structures. That was really cool to see and the rock climbing wall on the side of a grain elevator is pretty awesome.

Cool to see for the first time

Not so, this April 4/15/2026... as we (best husband ever and me) had the utmost, gold star, VIP experience at Ironworks for the, "How Does If Feel? Classy in a welcoming, hometown, feel-good kind of way! We loved the performance and tribute to some of the best music of all-time. The keyboard player - Jody Bagley - was exceptional! We are now massive fans and followers! This review of one of Buffalo's prized music venues would not be complete without a 10-Star rating for Gracie Vesneske. Every customer service entity, venue, and business wishes and prays for someone like Gracie on their team! Outstanding communication, brilliant attention to detail, and over the top follow through - makes Gracie the Great irreplaceable. Oh, what a night!

I am amazed that the space was an old Sears. The space was beautifully designed, well thought out and is now a destination instead of turning into another abandoned building. In addition to the event center attached is the BFLO store, a hair salon, Chruscicki Bakery, Simply Pierogi and Sto Lat. The space itself is perfect for a wedding or your next big event. It is a large open and airy room with darker wood floors, light walls and furniture and gorgeous crystal chandelier and snowflake accent lighting. The interior design is very modern and elegant with touches of Buffalo subtly added in. Great lighting, tons of parking and a huge bar. To the back of the room are doors which take you to a hallway that connects to the other businesses in the complex. The hallway is large enough to accommodate mingling of overflow guests from the event center.

They rent out small spaces as incubators and offer classes and guidance for growing businesses. If you have ideas of a thing you want to make, chances are there is somebody here who can teach you how to make it. The organization is very much based around community and sharing knowledge. I recently attended the holiday market where a number of the vendors that make the Foundry home were open and many visiting crafters. So far I've taken 3 and I can tell you these classes are small, intimate and really give you a hands on experience that really makes the class worth it. Some of these resident creators include a company that makes pucks and baseballs into bottle openers, a metal worker, glass blower, jewelry maker, a wooden frame bicycle maker and a man that makes bird feeders that resemble Frank Lloyd Wright windows. Most of them have etsy or other stores to browse what is available for purchase. For me, The Foundry is about creation, creativity and the access to be able to taken part in it. To work with skilled craftsmen, hear their stories, get tips while making something in the process. So check out a class or 10, it's worth it!

The wait staff was great, replenishing the various platters and serving trays of tasty mini-potato pancakes and boneless chicken wing bites throughout the evening. This also added to the event, making the room more attractive.
