If you're anything like me you're skeptically researching LASIK rewiews, scrolling over the good ones and looking for ANY negative comments or reasons as to why you shouldn't have the procedure done. With Dr. Mauro of North Shore Eye Care you wont find any. Trust me, i've looked!! On the first consult it was easy to see how he gained such great customer satisfaction ratings. He was very thorough with his answers and had a great sense of humor which makes it that much easier to ask some of the "silly" ones you plan to google lol. As I researched further I found he served as cheif resident of ophthalmology at Stonybrook University. This eased my mind a bit of all the general internet warnings about "finding the right surgeon." I went on 3 different consults, none of which compared to the staff and setting of North Shore Eye Care. On the day of the dialated exam I observed quite a few other patients in the waiting room there for a post-op exam with Dr. Mauro, all of which had nothing but excellent things to say about their experiences. Although this helped I knew their experiences had no way of determining the outcome of mine so still I was a bit anxious. On the day of surgery my boyfriend and I entered the LASIK suite which appeared more like a spa setting than a surgical center. After I was prepped for surgery I met with Dr. Mauro. From the moment I walked into the OR to when I sat down in the post-op chair, Dr. Mauro was by my side along with the surgical nurses to answer any questions and address any concerns. The procedure was completely painless and took less time than it did to prep me. After going over last minute instructions with eye drops and safety precautions I went home anticipating the worst of symptoms to occur over the next few hours. While it is true everyone's degree of symptoms will vary, I can honestly say I dont feel I expereinced any! I went to sleep and 4 hours later woke up absolutely AMAZED at how clear my vision was. I know by now you've probably read a million reviews reading "Best decision i;ve ever made!" and "Wish I had done this sooner.." well I remember anxiously reading those and praying for the day I can say that, and now I can! :) Couldn't be happier while typing this review ( it sorta looks like my computer is HD compared to when I used it to research lol) and if you're considering lasik I HIGHLY recommend Dr. John Mauro and North Shore Eye Care. At first I was a little skeptical upon receiving LASIK. Sure, it's proposed to improve your nearsightedness so you can throw out those thick framed glasses and countless pairs of contacts, but what about all the horror stories on google? After researching, what I've concluded is that there are so many individuals that ONLY take time to share their story if it's a bad one, so you never hear the millions of stories from people ecstatic of their outcome. Well here's one for you. LASIK changed my life. As a medical professional I had an idea of what I was getting myself into, but Dr. Jeffrey Martin really took the time to make sure I understand the risks and benefits of such a minor procedure. All office diagnostic testing was thoroughly performed upon two separate examinations to check that all measurements were precise, which was very reassuring. Throughout the whole 16 minutes of the surgery Dr. Martin played my favorite Pandora station, talking me through every step of the way. Sure, I was awake but I didn't feel a thing. I was even able to read the second hand on a clock ten feet away right when I sat up. Two days later and I was seeing 20/15 in both eyes (that's beyond perfect!). It's been six months since my procedure and the only side effect I have is not being used to opening my eyes in the morning and seeing better than I could have ever imagined. So if you are skeptical like I was, save yourself the anxiety from reading poorly written forums and get your facts from a physician - and if you want to hear it from the top rated team of ophthalmologists in Long Island, it might just be worth sitting in a waiting room for an extra half hour. read more

I have needed to wear glasses or contacts since the age of 5. I also have Crohns and was told by other ophthalmologists that I was not a candidate for LASIK. I came in contact with SightMD in January and decided to have a free LASIK consultation with Dr. Martin for another opinion. Him and the staff in Smithtown were excellent during the consultation process. They answered all my questions, as well as thoroughly reviewed and discussed my medical history before letting me know if I was a candidate for LASIK. I trusted his knowledge and "verdict" that it would be OK to move ahead with the procedure. I had it done earlier this week and was grateful that my husband and two kids could be in the room to watch the entire procedure. They were amazed how quickly I was done. My biggest fear wasn't the actual surgery, as I had seen it done before, but the healing and maintenance afterwards. However, Dr. Martin and the team were once again fabulous during the surgery and post-op process. It is amazing what a difference a day makes, as my one-day post-op I was able to drive and work (on a computer) without the use of any corrective lenses. Day 2 felt even better and I have faith it will keep going that way when I have my one-week post-op next week. I highly recommend that people get a second (or third) opinion when looking to get LASIK done, as if I never went to SightMD, I would have thought my lens free life would be possible. I had considered LASIK for sometime. I knew it was not something I could rush in to. So after getting more comfortable with the idea, I started to do my research. I inquired into all of the major offices on Long Island. Some were better than others, yet none had the reputation, convenience, and quality that North Shore had. Before I signed on the dotted line, they did exhaustive tests to make sure I was a good candidate, and really made me fully aware of the procedure in detail. By the time it got to the day of the surgery, I felt so comfortable and was excited! Dr. Mauro was the one who did my surgery, and I can't give him enough praise. The ease I felt around him was impressive, and his knowledge and technical proficiency really stood out. He talked me through exactly what he was doing every step of the way, and before I knew it, about ten or fifteen minutes later, I could see. Truly one of the most unusual and amazing experiences in my life. There are several offices, so it makes it easy for future follow up appointments. Everyone who works there is very friendly, helpful and professional. The one complaint, and I suppose this is a good thing in a way, is that the office is always very busy, and sometimes the waiting time is long. That does reinforce that clearly they are doing something right as far as the quality of their doctors, and technology, etc. that patients keep coming back. Dr Mauro did my LASIK surgery this past March and it was the BEST decision of my life!! I literally could not even see my watch unless it was a few inches from my nose prior to LASIK. I knew I wanted it but my mom was skeptical because "you only get one set of eyes"... Well these eyes are now 20/13 and I'm seeing clearer than ever. Dr Mauro was great with comforting my mom so she felt less anxious about ME getting the surgery. During the procedure Dr Mauro was wonderful; extremely professional and comforting...continuously assessing how I was doing throughout the procedure (which by the way is less than a minute per eye)!! I sat up from surgery and could instantly read the clock on the wall. THAT made my whole life. I very seriously was on cloud 9 and vividly remember telling my parents "that's it! I recently had LASIK surgery exactly one month ago and my vision has been better than it has ever been in my entire life! Within hours after my LASIK surgery I was already seeing close to 20/20 vision. I've worn glasses since the age of 5 and without them it made it difficult to work, go to school, drive and even perform any daily activities. Since my LASIK surgery, I can see street signs from a mile away. LASIK has been the best decision I have ever made!! Dr. Mauro is one of the most compassionate and caring doctors I have met and guided me step by step through the pre-op, surgery, and post op period. Dr. Mauro and the staff at North Shore Eye Care were extremely helpful and really cared more about my vision and my results after the surgery. This made me feel much more comfortable and at ease about having the surgery. The surgery was finished in less than 10 minutes and within minutes I was on my way to having perfect vision. I am now a few weeks out from my lasik surgery and I have ZERO complaints. (I was 20/300 and now im 20/20!!!) This was an incredibly easy procedure, took no more than 20 minutes but it changed my life forever. I have to admit that I was very nervous for the procedure but the incredible staff at North Shore Eye Care and Dr. Mauro really made me feel comfortable and explained every step to me. They are an incredibly welcoming office and didn't push me at all to have the surgery. The risks and benefits were extensively explained and the decision was left up to me. The surgery team and Dr. Mauro were wonderful, I remember during the procedure they played some music (low volume, and my choice) to help keep me relaxed which really helped and was very enjoyable. Also, the surgery center was a little bit chilly so one of the technicians actually went, got me a blanket and tucked me in which was not only a nice gesture but we all had a pretty good laugh over it. Have been thinking about having my son go for Lasik Surgery for a very long time. He has been wearing glasses since he was 2 1/2 years old. He could not see the big E on the eye chart without glasses/contacts. For his 30th birthday I decided that I would give him this "gift". We made an appointment with Dr. Jeffery Martin, who was recommended by our internist. My son fears doctors and will pass out from the shear fear, which he has done multiple times. Dr. Martin and his staff were highly professional and made him feel so comfortable. He had the initial consultation and booked within 3 weeks. He had to be without contacts for at least 2 weeks so he worn his glasses. The day of the surgery, he was a bit nervous, but looked forward to the outcome and was comfortable with Dr. Martins ability to have him "really see for the first time in his life". The entire procedure took less than 20 minutes, both eyes were done. He walked out of the office and was amazed that he could see the elevator sign. Took him home, he laid down for 3 hours on his back, which they advised. When he got up put in the antibiotic drops and unbelieveably he could see perfectly. Went to work the very next day with no problems. I thank Dr. Martin and his entire staff for giving my son such an unbelieveable experience and the gift of true sight. I was seen at North Shore Eye Care after being referred from STAT Health because of sudden vision problems in my right eye. Dr. Mauro got on the phone with the doctor from STAT Health and after hearing of my symptoms and instructed my doctor to send me right down even though the office was closing in half an hour. I was not even a patient at North Shore Eye previously. Once I came to the office, I was unbelievably impressed with every aspect of the office. From the front desk staff, to the support staff, and with Dr. John Mauro himself. They were all kind, caring, and extremely professional. I was diagnosed with a retinal tear and Dr. Mauro set me up with VRC in Hauppauge for laser repair the next morning. In less than 24 hours time the issue was resolved due to the expertise and efforts of Dr. Mauro and North Shore Eye Care. The doctor at VRC in Hauppauge even commented how impressed he was with Dr. Mauro's expertise at being able to visualize the tear because it was so small. It was so refreshing to actually deal with a specialty practice that is run so efficiently, yet is so compassionate. I cannot express my gratitude towards Dr. Martin and North Shore Eye Care for my amazing experience with LASIK surgery. I had LASIK done back in June and even though I knew exactly what to expect during the procedure, I was still extremely nervous. The staff did their best to make sure I was comfortable. They greeted me with excitement and even had my favorite Pandora station playing in the background. Dr. Martin talked me through the entire surgery and explained to me exactly what he was doing step-by-step. I was done with the surgery in less than 15 minutes and was able to see everyone's smiling faces, waiting for my reaction. I was so happy with my vision that I burst into tears. That evening, I received a very nice phone call from one of the surgical coordinators making sure I was recovering okay. She even shared her experience with the surgery, which really showed me that North Shore Eye Care truly cares about their patients. BEWARE of additional charges they don't tell you about. My father went for a checkup and paid his copay at the time of the visit. Then he gets a bill for $50-something additional. Turns out they charged for some eye test (each eye was $26 & change). My father was not told there would be an additional charge so it was shocking to get an additional bill that was even more than what his copay is. Completely unethical business practice to perform any service that is not included in the copay and then demand payment. NO! Tell people beforehand. If my father had known, he would have declined the test. AND - they apparently do not know how to properly either check eyes or write eyeglass prescriptions. My father took the prescription to get glasses made. He sees better with his old pair. When he went to the eyeglass place to complain, they said they made them according to the doctor's script. My father then went back to NSEC and they confirmed the glasses were made according to the script. A lot of good that does since my father still needs to use his old glasses! read more

I had LASIK and PRK performed by Dr. Martin on June 21 and I cannot say enough good things about him and the team at North Shore Eye Care. I had to have two different procedures done due to scarring from an old eye infection and Dr. Martin was so great about explaining the differences between LASIK and PRK and what I could expect from each surgery. The healing time for PRK is much longer than for LASIK and I am so thankful that Dr. Martin was willing to do different procedures so that I didn't have to go through the longer and more intense healing process for both eyes if I didn't need to. The surgery itself took less than 10 minutes and the team really does everything they can to make you feel as comfortable as possible. The wait times to get in for your appointment time can definitely be a little long (though I feel every doctors office is like that these days) but the staff is so professional and knowledgeable. The Smithtown office is also super nice and they always seem to have HGTV playing which was a welcome distraction for me! read more

I had my LASIK procedure just over 2 months ago with Dr. Mauro. The procedure itself took less than 10 minutes in total, and the atmosphere in the room really calmed my nerves. Within 4 hours of the procedure I already had crystal clear vision. I was also back at work the very next morning, without any pain or discomfort. I have been wearing glasses since I was 10 years old, and I have better vision now than I ever did with any pair glasses. My vision is a perfect 20/20, colors are more vibrant, objects at a distance are clearer, and I can see and read street signs from a distance. My vision has only gotten better over time. Having LASIK was the best decision I have ever made in my life. Dr. Mauro is the most amazing doctor- he cares for each of his patients individually and genuinely makes you feel like you are more than just a patient to him. Last week, I visited Sight MD, and I was initially hesitant to go because of my father's experience. He had a disability and required assistance with mobility, which can make navigating the clinic challenging. However, my friend Dorothy had a successful cataract surgery at Sight MD and expressed her willingness to return. This positive experience prompted me to reconsider my reservations and ultimately decided to give them a try. During my visit, I encountered a minor issue with the machine. I had requested that it be cleaned in front of me, and they promptly addressed my concern. Interestingly, I had the same test conducted at a Vision company in Smithtown as I did at Sight MD. The clinic had a relatively new doctor who joined in early November. She was exceptional and ensured that all my concerns were thoroughly explained in simple terms. Overall, I highly recommend Sight MD. They are attentive to patient needs and provide excellent service. read more

When I first walked into North Shore Eye Care, the receptionist greeted me with a great attitude and answered all of my questions. Then I met Dr Mauro, the guy was down to earth and fixed the irritation I had caused by fish guts. When I came back for a follow up visit, he told me I was a candidate for LASIK surgery. I had been told by other Dr's I could not due to astigmatisms in both eyes. We'll with the help of Dr Mauro along with his awesome staff they had me take some tests and found that I would be able to have PRK. I had the surgery and had some rough patches only due to my outgoing life style. I can finally say that not only do I not need contacts or glasses but my eye sight is improving everyday. I was lucky to walk into Citifield for a Met game with my friends and family and their was a North Shore Eye Care kiosk, I figured that I would go over and find out some information about it. I never had really thought about having lasik, I always thought my glasses were a part of my personality. By the time I left the table they had changed my mind. That Monday I made my consultation appt and i n the blink of an eye I am now three days post operation from the surgery and it is AWESOME! Someone told me today I looked llike a teenager, and I am so not..lol. Dr. Zweibel and his staff were all wonderful and made me feel so comfortable, there was never a doubt in my mind that I ended up at the right place for me at the right time. Being patient of this med. group, in June of 2013 I have called to make an appointment with Dr. Martin for my yearly evaluation. At that time I mentioned to the scheduling clerk that my eye site is changed and I need to see the doctor ASAP. They scheduled me for month of November of 2013. When later I complained about my eye site problem they rescheduled for October of 2013. But in September they called me and informed me that my visit is rescheduled for January of 2014. I called and I spoke with office manager, who sound very unfriendly and aggressive. She offered to reschedule my visit for December of 2013. And all that was for routine eye examination, which takes 5 minutes of doctor's time. The conclusion: this med. office is run unprofessionally, with very bad attitude. I wouldn't ever recommend this doctor to any of my friends because of his office management. read more

I would definitely recommend getting the LASIK procedure with North Shore Eye Care. They were very informative and caring when it came to my questions or concerns about LASIK. They were very accomodating to my schedule, when it came to making appointments. Dr. Mauro is great and helped to calm my nerves through the whole process. He provides his patients with his personal cell phone number for after surgery if you have any questions or need him. The LASIK procedure itself was a lot easier than I thought. Before surgery, Dr. Mauro asks what music you like to listen to, and makes sure it's on during the procedure. For each step of the procedure, they count down until each part is over which helped a lot! You honestly feel nothing! It's just a really weird experience, but it's over before you even know it. P.S. I had Lasik surgery with Dr. Ellant on Tuesday the 17th. I was beyond nervous, but the staff and doctor did everything they could to make me feel at ease. I knew it was a quick procedure, but it was over before I knew what had even happened! My only job was to relax, stare at a blinking light and trust Dr. Ellant to do his job. He was excellent, and didn't make me feel ashamed for feeling so anxious. I went in for my follow-up the next day, and Dr. Martin was able to make a minor adjustment to make my healing process easier. I am so, so thankful to both doctors and the amazing staff who were in the procedure room with me. They kept talking to me to make sure I was doing okay.
