This is a must visit store! Not only do they have an adorable array of beautiful yarn and quilting fabrics, the owner has a line of hand, stitching, felted, and fabric patterns. I loved this small but mighty yarn store! I am partial to summer yarns and this shop had me covered. It had plenty of great winter yarns too! It was right off the Main Street so it was an easy stop on the way to Mammoth. The two main stand outs at this shop was its coloring station and its scraps station. You donate and buy scraps from a little section in the shop and there was a coloring section by the window that my sister enjoyed. read more

Barri is the nicest woman! Everytime I come in she complements my work and we trade techniques or ideas. Its such a truly wonderful experience each and every visit! She will do anything she can to help out, weather it be brainstorm an idea, troubleshoot a problem or even just help pick the next endeavour. I try to make SCW the first stop every time im in Bishop and always look forward to it. It's amazing that even during tough times a small business like hers is still giving so much to help protect the community! Hands down my favorite quilt shop EVER! PS. This very charming yarn and fabric store moved to Bishop recently from June Lake. What a nice addition to one of my favorite towns. The yarn selection is not huge, but it is a very good selection of colors and types all the same. There is also a fabric portion of the store for quilters. A big draw here is the very nice and helpful owner, Barri. She is quite talented (has her own book on embroidery projects) and is a cheery person to chat with. If you like hand crafts, make this a stop. read more

I stumbled upon Sierra Cottons & Wools before a flight out of Bishop and it was one of the best parts of my vacation up to Mammoth! It's a bright, lovely shop that has almost anything you'd need when you're feeling inspired to be creative. I went in hoping to get some knitting ideas and I met the owner, Barri, who was so sweet, helpful, engaged and talented!! She sat with me to get me going on knitting (which I'd completely forgotten) and helped me pick out the perfect kit for my daughters upcoming graduation. coming from a city where you have to make a reservation weeks in advance for ANYONES help, what a delightful experience. I'm going to order some of her kits that she puts together for birthdays and holidays. Whether it's needle point, knitting, or anything else along those lines, This little gem of a store is worth a visit! It's wonderful to see these types of businesses still around and the craft doing well. read more

The yarn selection may look small but it is indeed mighty with a great selection and range of fibers and prices in a limited space. My visit on August 15 this year was a delight. I met the owner (wearing a mask) and we had a lovely conversation. The fabric is also beautifully displayed but alas I don't sew but seeing it made me wish I did. read more

This shop is neat, well stocked and inspiring! I was passing through town on vacation, and had run out of embroidery floss. They helped me make the selections for my needle work. I enjoyed the artfully displayed offerings and demonstration pieces that are eye candy all over the store. They have flosses, yarns, bolts of cottons, felts, a wide variety of hard to find notions as well quilt patterns and kits and projects for purchase. If my husband had not been waiting in the car I would have dawdled even longer, as it is he came in after me. Thankfully I had already made my spontaneous purchase of a hooked rug tool and monk cloth. HA! If you are near Mammoth or June Lake it is totally worth your time to pop in and take a look around, weather you are vacationing or a local. I had a desire to knit while on vacation at June Lake. A quick search for yarn while stopping for gas brought me to this lovely shop. With great customer service, I was in and out with beautiful yarn and a pattern to knit a winter hat. The project came together in no time. Just wish I had purchased more yarn. my husband was traveling through Bishop when he saw this store. I sew and Quilt almost everyday. They were just going to close the shop and they opened it back for him. He asked them for a row by row but they let him know that doesn't start for another month. He bought me a beautiful pattern and kit to make a wool pillow that has a mountain scene. He said they were very helpful and kind. I called the following week to thank them for opening the shop for him. The lady proceeded to tell me that she remember my husband. On a whim my daughter and I stopped by Sierra Cottons and Wools at their new location on E. Line. We drive by here daily and the shop has always caught my eye, my little one takes embroidery through the local 4H, so I thought, why not? I am so glad we did! The lady behind the counter is very sweet and very informative and the stores selection of projects is extensive, with everything being very cool and well thought out. I was surprised to learn that they had previously been located out off 395 near Rite Aid as I had never noticed the shop. We will be back to purchase more projects soon and I have already recommended Sierra Cottons and Wools to my grandmother. She stopped by and picked up an embroidery project to give to her hair dresser for Christmas. read more

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this store!!! Barri Sue's so sweet and her shop is the cutest. Love her handwork and she's always coming out with new adorable patterns. She has a wide variety of themes including sewing, seasons, and the outdoors to name a few. She also has different size projects ranging from 4x6" up to quilt size and all kits have different options for the same pattern. Barri Sue's a great teacher too and is willing to help out with any questions. I live 2 hours away and always make an effort to stop by when I can. read more

My friend and I just visited this store a couple weeks ago. We live in Apple Valley and drove 4 hours each way just to see this store. We absolutely LOVED it!!!!!!!! we cannot wait to go back up!!! I just wish I could have got to do the BOM, but it was already full...maybe the next one! the lady working that day was fabulous and was so knowledgeable..we had a great time and went back again before we left to go home. and yes of course we had lunch at Schats! we will be back up again...very soon! read more
