Carson City JAC - Monday, March 25, 2019: front counter.

On Thursday, April 11 and Friday, April 12 of 2018 I rode Carson City JAC (Jump Around Carson), the…read morebus service for the city, a number of times. My car was past its best days, and I needed to use this service to get around before I bought another car. I also had gone to their main office on Butti Way to pick-up a discount card back in 2015, I believe it was. I am mostly pleased with the bus service, with a few complaints on how it is administered. The buses are all clean; the bus drivers are nice; and the clientele (other bus riders) is friendly and pleasant. They also run on time and are not crowded. The bus shelter I waited at was clean. They have signs at most locations marking the stops, so you know where to wait. When I called them a few times, they answered right away and were helpful. When I emailed once, the person responded in a timely manner with an offer to call him so he could answer my complaints. There is also a free app they offer that I used on my phone to track the location of the buses in real time, so I was kept always informed. The app is available for both Apple and Google Android phones. Fares are $1.00, with free transfers. The price has been stable for at least the past four years I have been here. There are also monthly and 10-ride discount passes available. Seniors (age 60+), disabled people, and youth (5-18) get reduced $0.50 fares. Children 4 and under ride free. In addition, senior citizens, age 60+, can get free, unlimited bus service, through a grant from the Nevada Aging and Disability Services Division. The service runs weekdays from 6:30 AM to 7:30 PM, and on Saturdays from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. They do not run Sundays and six major holidays. There are three routes They say there are four routes, but two of the routes are the same, except one goes in a clockwise circular direction, and the other goes counter-clockwise. All buses meet at the Downtown Transfer Plaza every hour for 10 minutes to allow riders to make transfers. There you can also transfer to DART for Gardnerville, Minden, and South Lake Tahoe, or to RTC for Reno and Sparks. They also offer a paratransit service for people who are more disabled. My only complaints are: 1) The buses often take the side streets, behind the major shopping centers (like on both sides of South Carson street), and avoid some of the retail stores all together, like on East William Street or to the car dealers on South Carson Street. So people have to walk farther. This is probably better for automobile traffic, as the buses do not clog up the streets. 2) There is no service to the two major shopping plazas on Topsy Lane in Douglas County (Clear Creek Plaza and Carson Valley Plaza) right past the Carson City line on South Carson Street, or to the plaza one mile down the road at Jack Valley Road. These plazas mainly service Carson City residents, as the population center for Douglas County is more than 10 miles away. Sure, you can transfer to the DART, but that entails a hassle as the ride is much longer and more expensive ride. It would be much easier if JAC just extended their service one-half mile into the next county. It is also true you could walk from the Costco, which JAC does service, on the back road of Vista Grand Boulevard, by Fuji Park, but this entails a 0.7 mile walk (or more) and you would have to go through the back of Clear Creek Plaza, with no sidewalk and where the trucks are. Many older or disabled people cannot walk that far, or the weather could be bad. 3) My driver also made me wait outside the bus at the Downtown Transfer Station while she got out to use the restroom. In cold weather, this is a problem, as riders would prefer to wait on a warm bus. 4) The system does not have service on Sundays or holidays, and the last rides are at 6:30 PM on weekdays and 3:30 PM on Saturdays. 5) The schedule can be hard to read at first, as it is confusing to know were the various stops are, as they are not on the same locations on each side of the street. It depends on which direction the bus is going. It took me three or four times and a call to the operation center to understand this. For my review of their main office on Butti Way, when I went in 2015, I was pleased. It's a small, older office, with a desk. There isn't much of a waiting or standing area. There they offer the discount card, sell passes, and have schedules available. It was located out of the way, in the outskirts of the city, but I can understand that, as there has to be an area to park all the buses and it has to be close to the maintenance yards. They probably do not have a lot of customers go there. So, all in all, I am happy. It's a small city, so I understand they have to have limited bus service and they want to keep their fares low. At the same time, I like small, as that usually means better, more personal service and clean.

She had very little experience in this and she ended up getting a seat on a local. The tickets said it had two stops, however this is a misnomer. There are two stations where you can get out, But the bus stops many times on the way to pick up travelers. So a normal 4 Hour drive ended up it up taking her about 8 hours to get here. The workers and the drivers were friendly. She had no issues with any of the patrons. The bus was completely packed. The only real issue was the drop off in Sparks. The Sparks bus stop has no place for someone to wait out of the weather. There's an overhang. When my mother-in-law asked where she was to wait, one of the workers told her to go across the street to a small kiosk/café. Luckily she didn't have to wait too long, but it was freezing cold. I have not been on a Greyhound bus since I was a teenager, it is how are you right to Reno. They had a nice bus station in Bakersfield where I left with the café. I do remember it was a little expensive back then, and when I arrive to Reno, it was also a bus station with lots of indoor seating and a restaurant/café. I am not sure if these types of bus stations exist anymore? The online process is quite easy. They even have a greyhound app if you are a frequent traveler. Their website is quite nice and they also provide runaways and children free rides if needed. And of course budget friendly. The bus was definitely clean. So yeah, I wouldn't hesitate to use Greyhound bus system if there was a need.

For the past 6 years, I have been taking the 170 to Sacramento for work. I pay $135 for a monthly…read morepass every month even though I only need $72 to get to work for the whole month. I purposely buy the monthly pass because my pass is 100% reimbursable so I try to supplement my county by buying more than I need. During some months the auto reload doesn't work or is lagging, the morning drivers are kind enough to understand and always let me and the other riders on as our passes are being processed and because we have been loyal to the transit for many years. Recently, the other riders and my pass have not been auto reloading and is causing a lot of issues with the evening driver on the 270. Because of this, I am forced to pay out of pocket every time even though I purchased a monthly pass that will not process after 24-48 hours, which is unfair because if I buy a pass the day of I should immediately be able to ride the bus that very moment. I tried to reason and show the driver my receipt that I paid $135 for a bus pass 5 hours ago, but she was not having it and said, "I'm just the driver" and insisted I ask someone to pay for my fee if I don't have it. Hesitantly, I ended up paying the $5 to cover the $4.50 bus ride with no change given. After this incident, it has left a lasting impression on me that I can supplement my county by buying more than I need, but they do not care about me. After this incident, I will not be purchasing a monthly pass, will be asking for a refund since my pass was never used and activated, and only spend the $72 that gets me to work. Props to the drivers who allowed me to ride in the morning when my pass has not processed yet. I commend you for your kindness and treating me with respect and dignity for the pass 6 years. Shame on the evening driver lady for just being a driver and not having the compassion to listen and understand people's problems with the transit line.

Not only is the train one of the only ways to see the routes through and over ground semi familiar you have not seen before but it is a safe and fast and comfortable ride. A couple years ago I took a three day ride to Chicago out of San Francisco called the California Zephyr. It was so relaxing and the views so beautiful I got hooked. Now i take a couple rides a year and use the train for bay area day trips or just an overnight ride to Seattle or the like. The staff os always great, never a rude or pushy person have i met in am Amtrak uniform. The seats have a ton of room even in coach even the snacks and drinks are affordable. I travel a-lot it is what i do. Buses trains plains and even the occasional boat. Of them all the train is by far my favorite way to travel. Cars give you freedom the train doesn't but the train is much cheaper and with rides shares and parking fees, gas prices, and traffic, you loose very little mobility and gain so much more in the ease of the trip. That translates to relaxed passengers who are unguarded and happy on board. If you like me enjoy talking to strangers, you gotta take-a weekend trip. Rent a sleeping room or even sleep in the coach seats and by the end of the ride you will be at your destination at the pace a fast car trip, but ready to adventure on the other end. For solid and even great value try Amtrak. It is a very honest and straight forward well run company as well. The employees seem to love their jobs witch means managers do to. It seems as a customer to be a company who gets it from top to bottom. Embracing who they are and what they offer and are perfectly oaky with that. All those moving parts make the rails and Amtrak an American tradition worth connecting to and ensuring your grandchildren get a chance one day with their own grandchildren to take a ride through time and see the land as it was 100 years ago. Support Amtrak and ride the train short trip or long, it is a way to connect to kids to relax and to just be as you rocket through this second to none landscape of our beautiful country. So hit your reset button and spend a weekend with Amtrak, I promise you will not be disappointed even if you don't fall head over heels as I did my first ride and each and everyone since!

It was closed when I got here at 12:30am to catch my 2:20am train, the #11 Coast Starlight to L.A. it was quite and peaceful after the 140 mile drive to get here. There is a security person on duty during the early morning hours at this station. Which sits back off the road a bit and is located between Court and California streets on Yuba, downtown. The parking lot for both short and long term is well lit, patrolled and there is plenty of parking. My vehicle was there for a week just fine. A great little station that's busy in the early morning hours, would have been nice if it was open. 00067
