But I do remember many summers when my Mom and Grandma would pack up a canteen filled with hard-boiled eggs, plums, grapes and cheese and off we would go to Orchard Beach, a public beach available to low income homes. Great memories of sitting on the sand with my family, swimming in the Atlantic ocean and watching my Grandma peel an egg for me with love. So, it's no surprise when I moved to North Carolina that I was aching to have a little place by the water. In the recession of 2009 my dream came true and I bought a little 900 ft cabin on Oak island, a 10 minute walk from the ocean. During the pandemic this has been a lifesaver. Being able to jump in my car, drive directly to my place as I enjoy the beauty of Oak Island's ocean and Southport's Marina is heavenly and COVID safe!. When Mom was alive we used to love to drive to Southport to Asian Taste and order the egg foo young combo special. For less than $10 you get this huge portion that comes with fried rice and egg roll. So delicious, so scrumptious, so appetizing and so affordable! In honor of Mom and out of recognition of their delicious food, a trip down to my place in Oak Island rarely happens without me stopping by Asian Taste in Southport to get my Brunswick County fix!. I appreciate their sensitivity during COVID in that they are not allowing any indoor dining since the space is small. The counter is pretty much wrapped in plastic so there is not much interaction or fear of passing or catching anything. I always grab a few soy sauce packets on my way out. I continue to order the egg foo young special and also enjoy their egg drop soup. I try not to eat all the fried noodles on the way back to my house but I'm not always successful! LOL But nothing beats getting back to my cozy little place, sitting out on my screen porch and opening up all my goodies as I hear the ocean in the distance. I honestly cannot tell you about the other dishes and many combo specials that they have although friends and family have ordered them and were always very satisfied. Being a creature of habit, I keep going back to egg foo young and whether it's vegetable, shrimp or pork, it always hits the spot. I feel just like a kid of 10 when my grandparents took us out for Chinese food, and I coldn't wait until the end of the meal for that delicious little fortune cookie and finding out what my future holds! So here's the deal folks... COVID or not, get in the car and head to the beach. It's one of the few places today where we can walk free and have little fear of the pandemic. It's so easy to be socially distant on the beach and no chance of catching anything eating a big bowl of egg drop soup and a heaping portion of Chinese food on my porch other than a full belly. As I finished my takeout the other day and walked along the beach during sunset I was so taken back by the beauty of it all and the irony that the world can still look so breathtaking and yet the deadly pandemic looms over us. I'm counting on us all getting through this and having a big party of Asian Taste on the beach and celebrating...with a fortune cookie of course!!!

You can tell they stay busy during the height of vacation season as people kept coming in and out picking up bundles. We started off with some gyoza and honestly, it was delicious. Both the dumplings themselves and the sauce they came with. We could have downed four orders of them alone. I ordered an udon noodle based dish which right now I can't remember the exact name of, and it was a little plain for me. Adding sriracha helped significantly, but on it's own, it did not excite me to eat. The sauce was thin and didn't real absorb into anything or stick to anything. Very watery. I think I'd go in a different direction next time, maybe try a curry. Overall, solid enough for the price, but I really wish Indochine still had their outpost nearby in Southport.

Drunken noodles were really good, well seasoned and had a nice bit of heat. Tom Kha soup was very flavorful and satisfying. I was just ok with the Larb Gai. My husband and I are huge foodies, so exploring different restaurants and finding good food is basically one of our favorite things to do. We shared the duck tacos, shrimp & grits, and cheesesteak, and every single thing was delicious. The shrimp & grits were my favorite. The flavor was genuinely otherworldly. My husband's favorite was the duck tacos, which were incredible. And the cheesesteak deserves its own paragraph because this is officially the best cheesesteak we've had in the entire Wilmington and greater Wilmington area. We've tried quite a few, and this one absolutely takes the cake. The restaurant itself is really cute and has such a cozy, local feel. We went during locals season and it was perfect because it wasn't busy at all. We got to sit back, enjoy our food, and actually take our time (although it was so good we just shoveled everything in). We've tried a lot of restaurants since moving to North Carolina, and this is easily one of our favorite meals so far. Everything was flavorful, fresh, and just really well done. We'll absolutely be back. Although next time, I'm getting my own shrimp & grits because I will not share next time

"Delicious dive on Lake Park Blvd in Carolina Beach"…read more Came here for lunch on a Sunday at right around noon. The place is dark and kind-of makes you feel like you're in the bowels of a wooden ship. There's a large bar in the center, and a few tables around it, as well as a few tables outside in the back. We were seated right away. I ordered the hot honey shrimp wrap as well as the pickled veggies appetizer. My dining partner got the quinoa grain and greens bowl with blackened tuna. Our food came out in around 10 minutes. The hot honey shrimp wrap came with french fries, to my surprise (didn't see that mentioned on the menu), which were fine. The wrap itself was DELICIOUS. MAN, that hot honey was SO tasty, and the greens and corn batter on the shrimp really complemented it well. It is a very, very messy dish to eat with your hands, so be prepared, but it's well worth the sacrifice. The pickled veggies were local and very tasty-- also a very good value for $5. My dining partner really liked her bowl and the tuna in it as well. The staff were quite attentive, regularly checking in, filling drinks, and clearing dirty plates. Only caution is that a lot of the batters are corn-based, so be careful if you have that allergy. Overall, would very happily come back-- great in all respects. I recommend highly!
