We ventured outside our usual breakfast spot to try Fixins one morning. They were really nice and brewed some decaf coffee for me which I appreciated. The folks working in there were great and super friendly. The food unfortunately was a little underwhelming. The gravy and the grits were SO runny and the gravy was not only watery but totally lacked flavor. Adding salt and pepper only helped some. The breakfast potatoes were just frozen potato wedges. The waffle I really enjoyed because I don't eat waffles very often. If we go back, we would steer clear of the grits and gravy. We spent our holiday at Oak Island, and on our last day, we were searching for a spot to enjoy breakfast before hitting the road. With a large group of about 15 adults and 3 children, we called Fixins to check if they could accommodate us. They let us know about a small room perfect for our group, which was such a relief. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly greeted, and the hospitality was outstanding. Our waitress was not only kind but also helpful in recommending dishes. I ordered the chicken biscuit and loaded grits--both were delicious, though I personally prefer my biscuits a bit softer. However, the grits were exceptional and truly stood out. Everyone in our group enjoyed their meals, and it even passed the ultimate test, the toddlers loved it too! The customer service was absolutely top-tier. The prices were decent and not too expensive. Had a great brunch on a rainy week at the beach at Fixins! If you're looking for a place on Oak Island that kicks your standard breakfast up a notch, this is the place to go. They have all sorts of choices, from build your own breakfast bowls, grit bowls, and chicken n waffles platters. There definitely seems to be a focus on the fried chicken here, and I can see why! I went with the chicken and waffles breakfast personally, and it was picture perfect. Crispy breading with a nice seasoning, tender juicy chicken, all paired really nicely with the sweetness of the syrup and hearty waffles. The chef came around checking on the happiness of people with his food which is always nice to see. As the day wears on, they shift more toward lunch (though it appears you can order breakfast all day), and there are bone in chicken options and platters available. It's not a big place, so during peak season you can probably expect a wait. We happened to be there during a storm that ran a lot of people off their vacations, so we actually did not have to wait at all. The ingredients are always fresh and perfectly prepared, and it's clear the owner and chef takes great pride in his work. We ate breakfast at Fixins while spending a week at Oak Island. It was good. My breakfast burrito was solid; it was served hot with the eggs properly cooked and plenty of meat and other fillings. The accompanying breakfast potatoes, also known as frozen potato wedges, were served warm and had a starchy consistency indicating that they could have used more time in the fryer. The breakfast bowl my dining companion tried was also good. The eggs were over easy as requested. It featured fresh spinach and she thought the yellow grits were especially good. She mentioned that she would order it again. Service was fantastic. Our server was efficient, very friendly, and extremely helpful, all without being intrusive. The restaurant, which is not very big, is mostly separated into booths which provide a bit of privacy. It was clean and pleasant. Not sure how we've missed this spot until now. We've lived in the area 3 years and this was our first visit. It's a small spot on Oak Island Dr, kind of catty-corner across from Swains. We were in Oak Island for an appointment and decided to stop in for brunch. Cute decor inside and the staff were super friendly. We were welcomed in and seated immediately. Our server brought coffee and gave us some suggestions and a few minutes to decide. They have a big selection to choose from. I ordered a scramble dish with sausage that you could choose the veggies for - I had it with sweet potato, mushrooms, peppers, onions, tomato, spinach and cheddar. My husband ordered his usual - an omelette that was loaded with meat and cheese and breakfast potatoes. The food came out pretty quickly and the chef actually came out and asked how everything was. I couldn't finish mine, so took a box home for the next day. (It was just as tasty the second day.). I'm sure this place is packed full during tourist season, so if you're local - now's your chance! I had a late breakfast there with friends. Food was great and the service was top notch. We couldn't ask for anything better.

We arrived before 9 and had to wait maybe 5-10 minutes sitting on the benches outside. (I was told after 9 it's MUCH more crowded. Our server was delightful and promptly took our order. The made to order customizable Breakfast Bowl was something new to me but I enjoyed it (grits, scrambled eggs, bacon, spinach mushrooms cheese and a couple of potatoes, but you can change any of that up to suit your taste. The hubs had biscuits and gravy that he enjoyed. The gravy hit all the poins: flavor, color, consistency and amount of sausage were all on point but he DID get a side of sausage because ya never know what you're going to get. The portions were plentiful and the staff frequently checked on us and filled drinks as needed. We will definitely come back on our next trip through town. read more

Attended a cooking class this week. Enjoyed the food tremendously but also the community. Highly recommend. We divided into teams and cooked our food. We started with a panzinilla salad, chicken flaunts with cilantro cauliflower rice, chimichurri steak and bread pudding. The bread pudding needed a sauce. Everything else was spot on. Went to lunch yesterday to try their new fried chicken. It was good. Seasonings could use a little change. The Mac n cheese is perfect, and I enjoyed the sidewinder fries. The biscuit texture is just off. If you are a breakfast restaurant you have to fix that. Also, homemade jelly is needed versus the smuckers' packets. Overall, it's not a bad lunch. For dessert, my husband had the banana pudding. He really enjoyed it. I had the 1/2 waffle and berries. It needed a sauce. The waffle smells delicious. read more

Didn't give us silverware, or straws until we asked or got them ourselves. No refills. "What do you want?" Didn't bother bringing us our food or asking if we needed anything. Let's start with the restaurant building. It was evidently a house converted to a restaurant. Small rooms tight with benches and tables so that conversations are a shared item with the table next to you. Moving on, the menu is breakfast and lunch. I had a breakfast egg white omelet, with peppers spinach, onion and cheese. Also grits and pork sausage patties. Omelet was ok, the sausage was an extremely thin patty and they were dry. Grits were bland and I suspect instant. The chicken salad wrap was ok but the bacon was not done enough. Plus the wrap comes without chips or fries. All in all a really mediocre experience. On a final note the waiter spent way to much time at the table explaining the menu and what HE liked. read more

My plate consisted 2 stuffed peppers, macaroni and cheese, and a small mixed greens salad. I highly recommend the macaroni and cheese and salad. I was not a fan of the stuffed peppers. They were bland and tasteless. In my opinion, more tomato sauce and seasonings would have helped them. Great price $12 for blue plate which included drink or dessert. I had the pimento cheese omelette which was served hot with the ideal ratio of ham, cheese & green onion. Breakfast potatoes were the real deal, crispy outside with tender hot inside. Dining partner had the blueberry pancakes with bacon. Good quality Bacon was cooked to perfection. The dining area was bright, cheerful and clean. No sticky table or menus! As soon as we walked in, We were immediately greeted by the host and a server. The host immediately sat our party of 5 in a booth next to the window. Our male server greeted us on his was to drop off a delicious looking berry French toast to the couple near us. He came back to our table to take our drink orders and we were able to order our children's plate at the same time. This was important to us because our children get cranky when they wait too long. Our server was extremely accommodating! In addition, he was welcoming, friendly, informative and polite. Definitely saw the southern hospitality all throughout the entire staff and we absolutely enjoyed it! We were informed that all orders are made to order which is awesome because we knew that it would be fresh! Another server came by to give my husband and I coffee, which tasted great by the way. Our drink orders came out quick and so did our children's meal (they shared). We were surprised to see that our last 3 orders came out Not too long after that! At one point, the chef came out and made his way around to each table to say hello and hoped we were having a great time and enjoying our food, which we absolutely were! The food was absolutely delicious and each plate is enough to fill you up even past lunch time! We truly enjoyed this restaurant and all of its charm. I have a severe allergy to alpha gal due to a lone star tick bite. That means no mammal or any mammal ingredients or derivatives which makes it difficult to eat out. I've always come to this establishment with my family so they can enjoy the food. I just bring a protein bar and a deer park water (deer park uses reverse osmosis rather than bone char filters). However today I was told that because they serve alcohol I could not bring in my sealed, unopened bottle of water . This really makes no sense as it was 9am and no alcohol was being ordered. Additionally the bottle again was sealed. We left and went to rubys coffee house where they were much more friendly. read more
