Side Street is right by the Mordialloc metro station so it's convenient to get to, plus there is ample parking outside. There's not much ambience in the general vicinity though, compared to other suburban 'main' streets, so when I drove in late on a Saturday night, and it was super quiet and dark, I actually wondered if I was lost as there couldn't possibly be a bar here.
Once I parked and got over the initial "have I entered the twilight zone?" moment, I saw that Side Street did have customers chilling in the outdoor seating area at the front, and I was comforted (and relieved) to know that there were people around.
There's actually 2 entrances, one to the cafe/restaurant and another to the bar. My friend and I hung out at the cafe part first as there was a private function next door. I thought the cafe was cute... I liked the exposed brick and general decor. There is a doorway inside by the toilets that leads to the bar (we discovered this after we had gone out and then back in again through the other entrance!) so there's a tip for you to save an extra 60 seconds that could be better spent ordering your next drink!
The bar itself was trendy and had a great covered courtyard that was still busy from the function. I'd say the crowd was a bit more mature in age, not sure if this changes depending on the night, but it didn't strike me as the type of venue that would attract teeny boppers with fake ID, thank goodness! It was a bit more low key, and I don't think there was a strict dress code or anything (it is the 'burbs after all). The music didn't quite tickle my fancy, as it was a range of retro and rock with a bit of pop, but if you're just going for a chat and drink, you'll barely notice it. I usually only go to cbd or inner city bars, so it was interesting to know that there was one out this way, but I imagine the locals appreciate it, so why not check it out if you're in the area! read more
