I'm a big fan of the JCC--the facility is great, the crowd is vibrant and diverse, there's great programs, and the staff is smart and genuinely helpful. So why only four stars? I joined to swim, and the pool itself is excellent. The problem is what happens right before people get in: no one showers. I've seen people go straight from the basketball court, still schvitzing, into the jacuzzi (ew!). I've even seen lifeguards hop in without rinsing off. When even the referees aren't following the rules, as stated on the sign there, it's not a great sign. All this isn't exactly appetizing. I've lived abroad and traveled quite a bit, and there's a cultural aspect to this. In France, skipping the pre-swim shower is unthinkable. In Iceland, someone actually supervises your scrub-down before you're allowed into the hot pots. In Mexico City, where I swim in a private gym akin to the JCC, it's definitely enforced. In Japan--forget about it. I've raised this three times with Steve Miller, the director of health and wellness. His view is that they add enough chlorine to kill the germs and that people should know better, but there's no real way to enforce it--lifeguards need to watch the pool, not police showering. (Though they do other distracted things like testing the water.) His proposed solution has been new signage--but who knows when? And I'm skeptical a sign will succeed where social norms have failed. It comes down to education. Most people in the pool where caps, for instance. Why? That's what they were told. So, why not tell them to shower? It's simply a matter of priorities, which this doesn't seem to be. Maybe I'm the only one who cares--based on the evidence, that might be true. But for a place that does so many things right, this one issue, for me, is hard to ignore. read more

The facilities are well take care of and clean. The pool and basketball court is in great conditioned and looks to me like it has been remodeled not that long ago. The lap pool also has a small splash and zero entry area for little ones and a square shaped hot tub. read more

Do not join JCC as during the current health pandemic they continued to charge customers and will not offer refunds or credits moving forward. In my 45 years on this earth I never had a business take my money and not provide a service. A "charity" running as a business doesn't even have enough brains or heart to credit its paying customers during this devastating time. And get this, 3 JCCs in NY received between 3-6million in SBA loans during the CV pandemic yet they still won't provide a credit or refund. Karma is a real thing read more

My son attened the Summerstreeters camp this past summer. Though I was a bit late to sign up Debra, the director, worked her magic and was able to have my son join for the summer. He had a great time at all the activities and on the trips. He loved the counselors and I was happy with the staff to camper ratio. The camp was very flexible with choosing the days and weeks to attend. I would recommend this camp to everyone! It had a great variety of activities, trips and special days/events. read more

My kids have been attending SummerStreeters Day Camp for several years now and LOVE it! When I first met Debra Kessler, the Director, she was very welcoming and thorough with her explanation of what the camp offers. I found her to be kind, caring and nurturing to the kids. Debra goes above and beyond and is very hands on with helping the kids and addressing any issues. Their camp experience is better and better with each passing year! They love being a part of the SummerStreeters trips, talent show and swimming in the new pool. The only complaint my kids have is that they wish camp was longer lol The counselors were caring and took excellent care of my kids. I would highly recommend this camp!! read more

Sid Jacobs Y Beauty and the Beast Performance February 1, 2, 8 and 9th 2020. As before for a previous performance, there was so much good stuff. The acting, the singing, the dancing and of course the band for this musical along with lights camera and action, wonderful costumes and precision danced routines. Remember while much was professionally done, many are congregants with a whole lot of multiple talents, and they are not Broadway performers. When you hear them sing, play and act and you see the creative costumes and stage sets, it's remarkable how they put it all together and bring the story alive. Ed in the back was video/filming not one but two cameras from different angles for the cast and crew. He gave me a tip on how to capture the pictures on stage for that "Kodak" moment (of course, without a flash*) and no videotaping. (see photos) Ah the But - 4 stars only, as again for the second show I have seen here, there were problems with the mics, this time, causing some in the audience not to be able to hear conversation and or song words. The band/orchestra; count of what looked like 9 were spot on and a must for a musical, as they sat off to the side to play. I was not sure if they were aware that the mics were not working and if they were softening the sounds to the singers or not. However, many of us know the soundtrack and songs to the story and it did not lose in translation to follow along. The show known for Disney's version as well as the movie and other stage show productions is a classic family production with virtue and values story. The seats were mostly full and there was a variety of people of different ages. When I asked one young girl what she liked the best, she replied "Belle". (Jacklyn Lisi) Another young lady in the audience, was dressed for the performance in the "formal yellow gown". My favorites: Lumiere,(John Watts) who had excellent comedic timing, but needed to work on his French accent, along with his sidekick Cogsworth the clock (Phil Essex), and the young lady who played the little boy cup "Chip" (Lillian Hamilton). My friend Carol Wilkinson played in the ensemble. After the show with a quick meet, she said it was really a lot of fun. Some people gave light up roses as gift to the performers, this was so appropriate that I felt it worth mentioning. The show included a brief intermission running about 3 hours total. There was a small snack bar to purchase drinks and food in the back down the hall. The building itself was easier to find this time with GPS and signs on the way. On the walls were some for sale pictures of "The Cat In The Hat", out of my budget but enjoyable to view. Also, near the ladies' room were some formal pictures of the cast for this presentation. There was plenty of parking space outside and a bit of a roundabout to and from the main road. A building that said JCC on the right entering, was fenced off and the actual location of the show with the auditorium was the building on the left. One lady, sitting at a table upon entering, was volunteering for a donate food cans project. But I did not see any inclusions in the advertising of it and there were no signs directing people to it. Nor, were there any notable signs for the production outside. They are playing through the next week. If you have time and are looking for a nice activity add this to your list. Students and Seniors are $22.00 a ticket and the rest are $25.00. They can be purchased at the door. read more

Great place for families and individuals for gym, pool, workout classes, and cultural activities. It has a very welcoming vibe and everyone is very friendly. Found out about this place through my neighbor. I never would've known about it otherwise. It is very hidden. It's closer than my previous gym so much more convenient to get to. Wish the Friday hours were later but I understand since it's a Jewish center. Great workout classes and instructors. Can't wait to try more of them. Def would recommend. read more

The JCC East Hills SummerStreeters camp is a very poorly managed/negligent camp. The counselors are inexperienced, but for the price they charge, you would expect better training and diligence from the director and camp management. Kids are almost losing fingers while the counselors are in the room. Kids are bullied and when the director is informed, no action is taken. The parents are talked down to, for raising their concerns. I am not sure if race is a part of the issue but it seems quite evident. Health protocols are not followed, even during covid. Counselors are not trained well enough to recognize children who are sick and they are left unattended all day and not even sent to the director to check if something is wrong. Debra the director is not fit to run the camp. When asked about sickness spreading through the camp, she outwardly denied it is happening while children were getting sick. She yells at you like you are crazy for questioning her lies and does not follow-through. She will also blame the counselors when something happens even though she should be monitoring or staying on top of the situation. Children in the camp are not treated equally and even the children themselves can tell the difference. Escalating to the JCC Senior Management is useless. They do not even care to respond. The facilities itself is nice but I would stay away from the camp! It is a lawsuit waiting to happen! Children's safety is not the top priority, making money is. STAY AWAY if you care about your child's safety and well-being! read more

After highly being recommended for SummerStreeters camp this past summer I couldn't be more pleased I made the choice to send my son there. From the director Debra (sweetheart) to one of the counselors Aneesa (so caring) made the experience amazing for my son. The day trips to daily activities were always great where my son would come home and brag about what he did for the day. He always had fun and the camp was always responsive and helpful to any questions or concerns. What pleased me the most about the camp was the safety procedures they had in place always and that was a big decision of mine before I sent him there ! Group of 5-7 senior citizen women, most are members and those that aren't do pay for a day pass. The jcc has been more and more rude about allowing them to play games. They eat the food at the cafe, get kicked out, and not any other place has been accommodating. They tried the theater, library, lounge, and keep getting kicked out. Empty rooms and classrooms abound. One lady has been a member for over 36yrs. but these widows have not been accommodated and got yelled at. Apparently if there's no additional fee involved or if you are old, you are not welcome. During this covid period this "community center" is holding a drive- in concert series. My daughter is in a wonderful band of kids ages 15-18 that have played in many places all over Long Island and some well known places in NYC Pre-covid. They were asked by the JCC to play at the drive-in concert series- they would play for free and were happy to do it and be a part of helping the community. This "community" organization then turned around and told this group that they had to have a 45 car minimum at $30 a car in order to play. Shame on them for trying to rob a group of very talented teens that were willing to help a community center bring in funding for free! read more

Definitely not a place for single seniors. Full of toddlers daytime programs b/c it is a JCC. Fitness area extremely noisy due to openness poor acoustics. Equipment not so up to date. They do have a walking track and pool, sauna. Locker room is clean. Seniorcize class is nice. Cancer Wellness Program is good. Would rather be in a regular gym w/o so many kids. read more

Great facility in my opinion! It's pretty clean and has a good range of things to do inside the gym. The pool, jacuzzi, sauna, and steam room are a huge plus! The group classes are great too, but they do become over crowded a lot of the time and you have to squeeze in wherever you can. Unfortunately the parking lot does become a hassle. The lot seems a little too small for as many people that go to this center, but they do have valet parking as well. overall its a nice center! read more

This is a beautiful facility, very nice and clean. The younger adults and teenagers that work / volunteer there are friendly. The huge issue are the employees there, starting with the front desk to the ladies in the back by the pool entrance. This so called "Community Center" doesn't welcome minorities at all. From the moment you walk in you will get the stare down like you have walked into the wrong building. You ask a simple question and they will give you the attitude and the facial expression that makes you just want to leave. I have never felt so out of place ever. And in this day and age to still have this kind of racial profiling is ridiculous. Never will I step foot into this place again. Just sad such a beautiful place wasted with bad management. read more

Also, the indoor children's play area are for DAYCARE children only (unless) the weather is good, then all children's can play, but that defeats the purpose of taking your kids to the play area when it is too cold or raining/snowing(inclement weather). Also, the surrounding area brings high net worth families meaning, expect to deal with entitled stay home mothers with sugar daddy's ranger rover hustling the parking lot. The JCC is a warm and loving environment for everyone in the community from babies to the elderly. They run programs that are cutting-edge and much needed by many people. One such program is an amazing camp for special needs children called Camp Kehilla. I recently took a tour of Kehilla and was very moved to see how the camp positively impacts the campers and their families. It really is a gift for these families that the JCC offers such an amazing summer program with such a dedicated staff. read more
