Since moving out of the area we don't get to visit SB as much as we used to, so it was great to get a chance to stop in for Dr. Nyce's Christmas performance on Sunday. Our visit was great as usual! The service and employees are friendly and professional, making sure our drinks are topped off all evening. The large selection of beer has something for everyone from dark stoudts to juicy IPAs. They also have a great selection of cocktails for the non-beer drinkers.  The menu offered a variety to choose from and still reflects Shy Bear's commitment to serving  quality cuisine. The crab egg rolls were very flavorful and the Rueben was amazing. My burger was cooked perfectly and served with quality french fries.  The live music was great and provided a fun atmosphere for all.  Two words-- Jay Bird. 5 - I'd try to convince my wife to drive an hour just to come here. Skip to the end to see my rating scale. Shy Bear is a top-five brewery for this kid. The three things I look for in a brewery are an inviting outdoor space, accessibility to some good grub, and (of course) some quality beers. Big bonus if a place is dog friendly. Shy Bear easily accomplishes all three and earns a double bonus for welcoming our Doodle. The staff was great - they were packed but our hostess and waitress both made sure we were taken care of without being up-in-your-face. They understood both the food and beer menus and were able to make good suggestions. The overall atmosphere of the place was fun too - trivia night was going on while we were there and even the people who weren't playing along were obviously engaged. We had lunch not too much earlier, but we couldn't pass up trying one of the flatbreads that the waitress recommended. We were very happy that we did - just the right size and very tasty. We each got a flight of five so we got to sample a good chunk of their offerings. They had some unique variations like a cookies n cream sour and they also had some truer to original styles that I prefer - and I walked out with a four pack of their West Coast IPA to prove it. For sure I intend to try to convince Mama to go back again, get a room nearby, and sip on a few drinks outside when it's warmer - even though it's about a two hour trip! Shy Bear is a must for anyone near the Lewistown, PA area that likes beer. It's a microbrew that focuses on traditional and non-traditional brews served up in the proper glass. It's located just outside of town on a wooded hillside and has a pretty great vibe for inside or outside seating. Its small parking lot can be packed depending on the day or if they have live music. They have an outside stage and seating area that's really fun when the weather cooperates. They've expanded their interior to also accomodate live music during the colder months. They typically have over +15 beers/ciders on tap and they love to experiment. We go to taste whats new from sours, stouts, wheats, to various european varieties, etc. I don't always love everything but I am a fan of what they are doing. In general - I like their beer more often than not. Food has been hit or miss but lately we've really enjoyed it. It's an interesting and elevated take on the traditional bar food with sandwiches, burgers, tacos, etc. A must is the "Big Freakin' Pretzel" with 4 dipping sauces. Pricing varies but most food is $15-$25 and they offer a variety of beer sizes or flights for sampling. The cost is higher than most but so is the experience. I love it! read more

The food and beer at Shy Bear is top notch! We went here at lunchtime on Saturday and had a great experience. Between the large selection of beer and choices of cocktails and wine, there were plenty of adult drink options to choose from. We also ordered the cheese curds, cheeseburger, tacos and kids chicken finger basket and the food was fantastic. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and provided excellent suggestions. My Ahi Tuna Crisps were decent. I wanted cheesesteak eggrolls, but they ran out. My wife has a seafood allergy, so there was nothing for her to eat there. We were told they have a very small kitchen and there is too big of a chance of cross contamination. read more

Yesterday, my family and I went for drinks and apps. We had a great experience. I got the maple cream soda to drink and we split French fries, a pretzel, and the meatball flatbread which were all delicious. The pretzel was huge, and the layout was cool too. They made their own beer, and my family members said it was good. The only complaints I can make is the Korean bbq was not a hit, and the flatbread seemed like you could make it yourself with Pillsberry. All in all it was a good experience read more

This place is worth the trip! There is a big sign along the main road so you can't miss the turn. Pets are allowed outside and under the patio. The food was okay, but I didn't try much! I got the Philly smoked sausages got a great cook on the exterior but the inside of the sausage was off. Ground up too much like it was a fine meatball meat texture almost, which made it difficult to eat in a way and a bit of a let down. Thankfully, the Mac and cheese was choose on the smoker too - those noodles soaked up the smoke smell and flavor and was delicious. I would've liked more gooey cheese, but the cheese was definitely there. My favorite beer was Astral Events which is their Melonberry Wheat / 6% ABV. Shy Bear is a fine establishment slightly off the beaten path in Lewistown PA. They offer a variety of beers brewed on-site with styles to match nearly any taste. The food is tasty and portions are enormous. During our recent vist, my companion and I each ordered an appetizer because we wanted to eat light. The appetizers were priced around $12-14, which didn't seem particularly excessive since 1) This is a small business, less volume and 2) inflation has made restaurant prices crazy everywhere. She ordered the stacked nachos with chorizo, and we immediately realized the serving could feed four adults. Seriously. I got an equally intimidating serving of fried cheese curds with a most impressive side of marinara. Both appetizers were excellent and a great value for the price read more

The person I dined with liked most of the beers, and they're a bit of a beer snob, so that's a plus. For me, it was a mixed bag: good cocktail, and I wish I had been able to try more, as several on the menu looked absolutely delicious. The food menu was a letdown, however, for me as a gluten-sensitive person. Only 3 items on the whole menu were gluten-free--all tacos that could be converted into bowls, except maybe not, because one of them said online that the bowl version had breaded shrimp. They were happy to do burgers/sandwiches without a bun (I was nervous to ask about any accommodations beyond that because of a detailed warning at the bottom of the menu that they absolutely don't do substitution requests; only some elimination requests). My meal was good but not amazing, and I don't plan to come again because of the lack of food options. The atmosphere was fine, nothing bothersome, nothing to write home about. Growing up in Mifflin county I wouldn't have believed that one day there were be a brewery like Shy Bear just a bit off the beaten path of 322 tucked away on top of a hill next to a coffee wholesale (rich coast). I finally visited Shy Bear during a trip to visit family and we were pleasantly surprised of the atmosphere, the food, the brews and the owners (who were onsite). This little gem may be the talk of the town but outsiders could definitely miss the exit on 322 to get here if you didn't put it in your GPS. Everything we had was great. I love this amazing spot that's boosting the local economy in a much needed way. If you're visiting PSU, go here on your way in our your way out. You won't regret it. read more

Wonderful combination of food, beer, and atmosphere. This is our go to anytime we are in the area. And we travel to central PA every few months to visit family and friends. We have yet to have anything that disappoints. I tend to favor pilsners and IPA's and ShyBear does both of these really well. In the times we have stopped I have tried most of the variations available and enjoyed them. The atmosphere is a combination of beer garden and pub. Very clean and relaxed a wonderful place to visit. And the best part is they are very pet friendly. Since when traveling we usually have our dog. The beers are spot on, actually for me the first time in awhile I have been to a brew pub that the beers tasted like the their description. The food was also very good, the Brussel sprout app was flavorful and a nice serving. My fiancee's Burnt End Sliders were yummy. My ribs had a good smoke on them and a delicious sauce. The reason for a 3 is two fold, not being able to get another side with my meal, in this case cornbread, and if it wasn't for sitting next to the owners of the restaurant I wouldn't have been able to get additional sauce for my ribs. I felt the younger barmaid had an attitude about going up and above for service. I'm not sure how either offering to get a piece of cornbread and or a side of sauce was so much effort? 3 star ! -2 star for the fact that food is just entirely not good at all! And on top of that they are trying to be creative with the food such as kimchi hotdog ! It's hard to imagine what that would taste like. We got nachos ( horrible ... probably one of the worst nachos I've ever had ) the meat was clump up together and the cheese was drizzled in random places, the salsa was not fresh and avocados and jalapeño were also not fresh:(. I also got the boneless wings ... it was very small more like bite size chicken breast... super salty ( for the medium Buffalo sauce ) and fries were okay! I mean it's sad that the only thing that was even OK was the fries. Anyways the beer is nice and the ambiance is definitely pretty sweet:) but dang don't go for the food !!! What delightful, surprising find in my hometown; a great addition to the area for anyone who craves elevated casual/bar-type food and quality craft brews--they have both. Everything about this place seems thoughtful, from the beer offerings to the food menu to the decor, even down to the logo and the names of the beers. They serve the kid's meals with a spiral-cut apple, for heaven's sake. That kind of attention to detail really engages a customer. No doubt the menu changes periodically, but from a visit in late August I can vouch for the tacos (pork, shrimp, and chicken in that order), the garden salad with chicken, the fries, and the soft pretzel sticks. All delicious. I sampled several beers which ranged from C to A-. I can't recall the names of my favorites except for the Paddy O'Furniture, an Irish-style stout (har!). Service was so-so. The main woman taking care of us was very cheerful; however, there were at least a couple others helping, and they kind of botched some of the nuts and bolts of taking orders and paying the check. Not earth-shattering stuff, just unfortunately not smooth in ways that .should be easily avoidable. They feature both indoor and outdoor seating, plus an outside area that lends itself well to modestly sized events. I will most definitely return! read more

Great beer 2. Large outdoor seating are with stage and games 3. VERY kid and dog friendly (we have both) 4. This was our first visit to Shy Bear and my wife and I were pleased with the entire experience. I had a flight of beer focused on their IPAs, all of which were good but I especially enjoyed the Hoochie Kookaburra double IPA. We had a big freaking pretzel as an appetizer and would order this again but only if we had more than two people; it's clearly a 4-6 person appetizer. We each ordered tacos and traded between us. Korean pork was my favorite, but a little spicy for my wife. She loved the ahi tuna, which I enjoyed also. Young adult locals rave about the food and drink here, especially the beer. I have gone here a couple times now at different times of day and week day vs weekend with live music. If you want a semblance of food diversity and taste in the area, Shybear is the only place (not including state college). Ambiance 5/5 There's no place like this in the area at all. So, this is your only option really for a nice outdoor/ indoor venue that serves food and serves their own beer. Their outside patio serves as a great place to listen to live music and to even bring pets (though I'd ask) with friends and a nice cold beer. Overall, I love their layout with options of fully inside, patio (outside but coverage), and fully outdoors. FYI when they have a live band, the sound will carry, so if you want to hear people talk rather than enjoy live music I would opt inside first to be able to hear at all and patio for semi being able to hear. Drinks 5/5 They have a varied selection of liquors in their cocktails along with an extensive drink menu. I like that they try to support PA centric alcohol business where possible! They have fun flavors and a menu for cocktails, so I recommend this place for that. I know when I come here the drinks will be good. As far as beer, it is on point as well. There have IPAs, light, heavy etc and I genuinely enjoy their beers. Bring a growler with you if you're here and I recommend their flights! Service 3/5 I really have mixed feelings about this. The service is spotty and I'm not sure if its because people are spread really thin or if its just a large space with x number of servers. When I say service, I do not mean they don't have kind servers. All our servers we've ever had were kind, polite, amazing, and attentive when you have their attention but at the end of the day they are beholden to the kitchen and the number of customers they have. If you are hungry, we really suggest just ordering appetizers with your drink immediately because you'll finish your drink by the time you either get another server to come by or get any food since the wait for food is long. As soon as you get your appetizers, put your food order immediately if you can help it. It's got to the point where we look at the menu ahead, figure out what we want to order and just literally order then and there to make sure we get to eat. I want to say that this has been a singular experience, but I've talked to multiple people at different age ranges and when they go and this is a similar experience. We recommend not coming too hungry or build in time for your dining experience or you'll be late for your other appointments - tack on an extra 30-40 min potentially depending on peak dining times. Food 3/5 For the area, I like that they are trying to bring new life to the central PA with the types of food available on the menu and the diversity of flavors. We need more places like this in the area and I think it is wonderful despite being a brewery. It seems their menu changes from time to time with the season which is good. They have fun with their menu which I love - food is art and the menu reflects the fun they have with it. I will say because they have so many options with the types of food - from ramen, cheesesteaks, cheese curds, to tacos - it can be hard to execute effectively. The menu lacks focus as a tradeoff to diversity. Because it lacks focus, it's hard to specialize or get good at one thing and its hard to probably train someone too on this. I come here knowing that it could be a mixed bag with how my food will taste both flavor profile and seasoning. And that's ok but I want to set that expectation. Sometimes it's been good and some days are lackluster (i.e. extremely salty, dry, soggy, or the flavor completely misses the mark it advertises for). For lackluster days, I wouldn't want to send it back to the kitchen because I've typically already waited 30 min+ to eat or won't find my waiter in sight. Their appetizers and burgers so far have held up to the test of time. The tacos are a mixed bag - but I'd try them because the menu always changes on those so why not? Recently the Korean ones I just had did not taste Korean and were extremely salty. I think it must have been who was in the kitchen that day because even our cheesesteak and fries came out extremely salty. That's ok; it happens. Went at 5 today and was told the kitchen was backed up 30 minutes. No big deal but then told we couldn't be seated or order drinks until then because it is "too confusing". I'm so glad I finally tried Shy Bear! Its about a 40 minute drive for me, but the food, beer and atmosphere are well worth it! I came with a group of 7 on a Friday night and we sat at a nice big table outside under the awning. The food was delicious. My friends got the poutine and I tried it and instantly wished I'd ordered it. I got the hotdog trio and they were a little greasy (buttered buns like for a lobster roll), but everything else made up for it. We all shared the smore's platter for dessert and they were so good! It was fun that we got to roast our own marshmellows too. I got the seabreezy beer and it was great, a little sour but super refreshing! I tried the sandal weather and it was really nice too. All of my friends liked the beers they got as well. Our server was super nice and accomodating and the other ladies that brought out beer and food items were great as well! Shy Bear has been a favorite of ours since they opened, and we often enjoyed sharing that experience with friends whenever they were visiting as well. Typically I'm not one to complain on these reviews but I feel this was warranted. We brought friends here on a Saturday around 1 and wanted to sit inside as it was a hot/humid day. Our server didn't even make it to our table before the air conditioner started dripping on a guest we brought to shy bear for their first visit. When asking the bar tender if we could move down to the other empty table, we were immediately met with an aggressive, brush, and embarrassing response. "That's how it is when it's humid out, it's condensation there's nothing I can do about it" and "well great now we can't sit anyone there" We weren't asking for her to work a miracle, but to reassure us that we could move and the server would know where we went. Once we moved to a new table (which is directly across from the bar), all was fine and our server was friendly, and attentive. However, it was more than uncomfortable when the bar tender continued to harp on the fact that we requested a new seat to every person that sat down at the bar....yes, within ear shot of our table we could hear her. Not long after, another family was seated at our original table, and the bar tender turned to a customer at the bar and said, "I guess we'll see what happens". There's just really no words when you hype up a place to your friends, and bring them there to experience it, and before they've hardly had the chance to sit down, a situation like the one we had ensues. I've worked in F&B for a number of years, I know right now is a tough time and people are short staffed. Understanding and kindness however should never be lacking. Our guests that we brought, remained to stay uncomfortable the entire time we had lunch & drinks, and it's really just unfortunate that was their first impression of Shy Bear. Side note: our food has usually always been good, with the exception of once before (which you will not find a review of, because everyone has bad days, I get it), but our appetizers were cold. We also have noticed that many of the original flagship beers that put Shy Beer on the map, haven't been reintroduced in awhile, which we found to be underwhelming in contrast to their current line up.
