That said...we've seen the ups and downs. The live music is always great, fantastic, really, with small but nationally noted acts. The beer is outstanding (and I write about drinks for a living), though you will NOT find anything fruited, or sour, or trendy; OTOH, the standards are finely-honed perfection. The service is... eccentric, but loving. The food has had some rough patches, but the current chef is great. The menu has been revamped, with solid regular items, and inventive specials. We'd still move here for the Elk Creek.

Our visit was great as usual! The service and employees are friendly and professional, making sure our drinks are topped off all evening. The large selection of beer has something for everyone from dark stoudts to juicy IPAs. They also have a great selection of cocktails for the non-beer drinkers.  The menu offered a variety to choose from and still reflects Shy Bear's commitment to serving  quality cuisine. The crab egg rolls were very flavorful and the Rueben was amazing. My burger was cooked perfectly and served with quality french fries.  The live music was great and provided a fun atmosphere for all.  Two words-- Jay Bird. Still the standard for all other IPAs!

The three things I look for in a brewery are an inviting outdoor space, accessibility to some good grub, and (of course) some quality beers. Big bonus if a place is dog friendly. Shy Bear easily accomplishes all three and earns a double bonus for welcoming our Doodle. The staff was great - they were packed but our hostess and waitress both made sure we were taken care of without being up-in-your-face. They understood both the food and beer menus and were able to make good suggestions. The overall atmosphere of the place was fun too - trivia night was going on while we were there and even the people who weren't playing along were obviously engaged. We had lunch not too much earlier, but we couldn't pass up trying one of the flatbreads that the waitress recommended. We were very happy that we did - just the right size and very tasty. We each got a flight of five so we got to sample a good chunk of their offerings. They had some unique variations like a cookies n cream sour and they also had some truer to original styles that I prefer - and I walked out with a four pack of their West Coast IPA to prove it. For sure I intend to try to convince Mama to go back again, get a room nearby, and sip on a few drinks outside when it's warmer - even though it's about a two hour trip! My rating scale: 1 - Just don't 2 - You'll survive, but there are better choices close by 3 - Good choice if you're in the area 4 - I'd drive 30 minutes out of my way just to come here 5 - I'd try to convince my wife to drive an hour just to come here

We walked in expecting a typical dining experience with a menu but found out things had changed…read moredramatically. Our hostess, who we later found out was the owner, explained to us that if we wanted food, we could order it from outside where there was a traveling chef with a pizza oven. This was a big change from the usual menu and what we had expected. We decided to go with the flow, take a seat at the Ouija board table, place our drink orders, and go outside to order food. This week the chef had a woodfired pizza oven. Keep in mind, cider is the focus here. So, my husband's old fashioned was made with cider. Hearing this, I asked for my cider on the side rather than in my cosmo. We learned that the owner's background is movie set design and that she worked on movies like Harry Potter, so the decor was a combination of old industrial plant and haunted house. The bar had "potions" with smoke oozing out. There were also skeletons and skulls throughout the restaurant along with spooky photos that changed from normal to scary. She even allowed us to explore the different back rooms one of which she called the "swamp room." The pizza was good, and we enjoyed listening to the live music which wasn't overwhelmingly loud. Overall, everyone was kind and made us feel welcome. We later ordered the blueberry cobbler for dessert which was warm and tasty.

For an area with slim vegan pickings, this felt like a gold mine. We ended up trying a few menu items and they were all delicious and tasted quite fresh. My biggest gripe was that the risotto was made with a medium grain rice rather than a traditional Arborio, and that the prices for food were on the higher end given the portion sizes. The cider flight was delicious. There is plenty of seating, include extensive outdoor seating that looks out to the forests surrounding. Indoors is filled with spooky, eclectic industrial decor. The staff were friendly and thoughtful. It's a gem of a spot!

We started with a flight of whisky's for me, a cab sav for my wife and a cocktail for my daughter. All good! We had some maple bacon Brussels to kick things off and they were legit! I got the coconut curry salmon - DANG. So good! Crispy skin, perfect rice and the snow peas! My wife got the Delmonico (I had to help her, oh darn!) and it was perfectly cooked and very nicely seasoned. Daughter got the short rib and oxtail over noodles and they were perfect. Everything was exactly prepared and delicious! After dinner we went to their distillery tasting room and tried a few more of their distilled offerings, bought several bottles but the star of the show was the Limoncello! This was not your Italian, tastes like Pine-Sol limoncello - this was perfectly balanced and exceptional! Definitely put this place on your list if you're in the State College area. We are!
