The only place I go out and eat hot dogs. I love the gravy fries. No cheese. Cool counter and nice people

Great place for lunch! Shorty's has been in business for over 90 years. Don't expect any frills, just a good classic lunch. The service is quick and friendly. The inside hasn't changed in 90 years, but that's what people love about it! read more

We stopped by this place after hearing that it was a local favorite. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. Our order came out so fast, we waited less than 3 minutes. The food was fresh and delicious. I had to knock off a star because they don't offer any cheese and I like cheese on my chili dog. They only accept cash but do have an ATM on site. It's run down looking but it is old and has a lot of history to it. read more

Stopped by Shorty's on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. I had three hot dogs with chilli and mustard a drink a small fry. Fries were hot and delicious. The hot dogs were really good too. My only complaint is that they have no cheese but that seems to be their thing and everything tasted great regardless. Our waitress was so fast and kind, she stopped by regularly to make sure we were taken care of. The building looks like it is stuck in the past and to me, that's a good thing! Clean booths and a bar top to sit if that's your thing. read more

Many people say they love it here. It must be due to the history but I thought the hot dog was not good at all.

I put this restaurant into one of three groups - a place people love, a place people hate, or a place people go to just to say they've been there. I'm in the last group. Took a friend there. Only went there because the Southern Yank Smokehouse down the street was closed due to a water problem. Visited in December 2020, when COVID was still being a raging witch with a capital "B." First, during our visit, none of the workers were wearing a mask. Ordered a chili dog and some fries. Chili dog was OK; it was a "cheap meat" dog, not 100% beef. The chili saved it but it was a sloppy mess. The fries had absolutely no seasoning on them whatsoever. The food is cheap. The workers were nice, but being maskless didn't make the best impression back then especially when the vaccine was not available at the time. Would I go back? Let me put it this way,...I wouldn't go out of my way to say "Hey, I know a place." If I'm in town and offer a dare to whomever I'm with, maybe. read more

We have found the downtown location to be more consistent in taste and quality than the Wolfdale location. This is one of those acquired tastes that the locals seem to love. Quick service and a somewhat shabby ambience. A good wiener (alberts I would guess) with a watery beef chili heavily tasting of cumin. Most people get them with onion which seems to be a rehydrated onion. Fries and gravy are ok with a salty beef gravy. I have tried the burgers and have not found them to even be worth mentioning. My wife grew up with this Washington landmark and is a big fan. She has also introduced our kids and grandkids so we usually pick a few up when passing through. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped at one of his favorite lunch places when he was in college at W&J. Shorty's is a great pit stop for lunch when you're driving through Washington. The staff was very hospitable and took our orders right away. We both got two hot dogs with chili & onions. Overall I'd give the hot dogs a 3/5. The bun was too soft for my liking, but the chili and onions were very tasty. We couldn't help but notice how friendly everyone was and although we weren't regular customers they treated us as such. I would definitely stop here again when looking for a quick bite passing through Washington. read more

I grew up eating Shorty's Hot Dogs so maybe I'm biased. A dog with everything is simple...mustard, onions, chili. Still inexpensive and still well worth the visit when in Washpa. read more

Great environment and even better food. Bathrooms are not tended to. They smelled bad and were out of paper towels. The floors were very slick from the rain that day. Not having mats to dry your feet on is just asking for an accident. Very unsafe. read more

5 stars for hot dogs and atmosphere 4 stars for chili sauce 3 stars for fries It's very crowded despite being in a rather run-down town. Washington PA isn't exactly a tourist hub, so it's fun local atmosphere etc, they have their craft down and an appropriately limited menu. Hot dogs had a good snap, I wish they'd put on a bit more chili since it was too mild for me to clearly taste in the bun and all. Fries were hot but not that tasty, didn't seem fresh-cut like the O in Oakland or anything. I'd return if in the area. read more

Great small, down to earth restaurant to eat at. Absolutely love their hot beef dinners. The fries, gravy and hot dogs are amazing as well. Highly recommend! read more

Shorty's is an old school tradition. They are known for their hot dogs. You walk in and see that it's never been remodeled. It's old but mostly clean. I ordered two hot dogs with chili-no cheese on the menu. The menu is actually pretty simple-hotdogs, fries, and roast beef sandwiches. We ordered a large fry with gravy. My hubby ordered a roast beef sandwich. The hotdogs are just cheap hot dogs on cheap but fresh hot dog buns. They are $1.90 each. What made my dog so good was the chili on top. Again, basic but good. The fries were cooked perfectly and the gravy wasn't overly salty (which I thought they might be). The roast beef sandwich was plain. Just a simple hamburger bun with a slice of roast beef on it. The roast beef was tender. They also serve beer which surprised me bits is cheap beer-Coors Light, PBR kind of stuff. The best part of this is not really the food but watching the dude making hot dogs. The waitresses shout out the orders and he stacks hot dogs up his arm over and over putting on the toppings. (I'm pretty sure that the Board of Health would approve but it's fascinating to watch.). read more

Best hotdogs in town. Fast friendly service if you're looking for a quick lunch it's a good place to go.

This place is a staple in washpa. Very limited menu: hamburger, hot dog, roast beef, I think one or two other things and fries. My go to (and I think the only thing anyone should stop in for) is 2 with everything (that's 2 hot dogs with chili, onion, and mustard) and fries with gravy. This is my favorite chili. It's simply and thick (pretty much meat and cumin). read more

Shorty's Lunch - Gotta love Shorty's in Washington! - Hot Dogs Near Me - Washington, Pennsylvania

I'm going to keep this review Shorty's and sweet. See what I did there? Let me start by saying that a good friend has talked about Shorty's Lunch for years because she used to go there all the time as a kid. But seeing as it's a solid 40 minute drive away from my home, I just couldn't commit. Even for hot dogs and gravy fries. But Shorty's has been on my list of places to try for awhile. Cut to last weekend when I happened to be in the Washington area for a wedding. Shorty's was not too far away so I decided to finally make the stop for a quick lunch. Quick would be an understatement. Inside Shorty's Lunch is not that spacious with just a few booths and a counter. I sat at the counter, ordered two hot dogs with everything (mustard, chili, onions), gravy fries and an orange soda. The staff has their service down to a science. My waitress yelled to the front window to the guy manning the hot dog grill that she needed two with everything and then yelled to the kitchen that she needed a small gravy fry. (I heard the same order placed several times in my brief stay so this seems to be the more popular meal.) My food was in front of me within two minutes. The gravy fries were just what I wanted, not overly salted but generously covered with gravy. The hot dogs hit the spot. And while I've seen some people complain about the onions, I liked that they were smaller diced and added more texture than onion flavor (I don't like when the onion overpowers the taste of the other toppings). I was in and out of Shorty's within 15 minutes and my bill was around $7. My waitress was sure to ask if I wanted anything else (including a refill before my cup was empty) before leaving my check. No, this is not the place for a leisurely, romantic or gourmet meal. That's not why people come back. Shorty's Lunch is simply a well established hot dog joint with a limited menu that they've been executing the same way successfully for decades. It's easy for me to see why this is a neighborhood favorite. read more

After ready the reviews and looking for a quick lunch, thought Shorty's would be good. Was disappointed in everything! You walk in and the hot dogs are on a grill by the door and window so that looks good. Shorty's has a very limited menu and very limited toppings for your sandwich or dog. 4 items to chose from, hot dog, hamburger, fish and something else and fries are available. The pricing is very low so that is a plus. We sat at the counter since all the tables were full. You get your hot dog in about 60 seconds flat and fries came close behind. No cheese for you dog, just mustard, ketchup, relish, onions and chili. My dog was salty, not sure why, and the onions are small little mashed pieces that had a strange taste and no onion flavor. My fries were hot and good. The do have gravy for the fries. Our server never looked at us when we ordered, never came back except to put down the check and stood in the corner with other servers to chat. read more

An institution in Washington! Classic, reliable hot dogs and delicious fries with gravy. Service is the fastest around! Seat yourself and be ready to order. I typically get two (hot dogs - but you don't have to say this when ordering, it's assumed) with just ketchup and my husband gets two with everything plus ketchup. Sometimes we split a large order of fries with gravy - add salt and pepper to these for the perfect balance. Best lunch in town! read more

I remember this place from when I was a kid. It is simple yet good. It isn't about the dog, but the sauce. Gravy fries are very well done as well. It is truly something from memory lane. Screw all these new fancy fusion crap places. Bring back classic Americana!!! read more

Curt, but somewhat friendly and attentive service at a table today. Food, not so hot ... hot dogs are waaayyy too salty, there wasn't enough chili on them (the chili I did have wasn't very flavorful) and the onions were cut so small it was hard to tell they were even there -- what stood out most to me was SALT. I found the fries to be flavorless. My father-in-law didn't like his fish sandwich either -- had to slather it in tartar sauce. The place is dingy and dirty too ... floor tiles coming up, sticky tables, food crusted floor mats in the doorway, dirty workspaces behind the counter ... makes me wonder what the kitchen looks like ... I understand this place is an institution but I wouldn't go back despite how cheap the eats are ... and, I like a good dive as long as the food is good and it's clean. read more

Even though the menu is small & simple. This is the perfect pit stop for hot dogs & freedom fries. If you're in the Washington area with a few dollars to spare, come here for a snack or meal. This review is for the W. Chestnut Street location only. Dollar for dollar, this can't be beat. Sure, this isn't where you go for fine dining, but it's the best food for the price. Just order a hamburger and/or hotdog "with everything". I used to crave this place when I lived in good 'ol WashPA, but since I moved away, I make at least one stop every time I come home. read more

Classic joint. If you're from or around WashPa, you already know! Cheap, fast lunch w quality food!

Great service. Great food. Great prices. My hotdogs were awesome. This is definitely the place to go for some great hotdogs.

I've been hearing a lot about this place from some locals to the area. Today I had the chance to swing by and see what the hype is all about. Parking was a breeze today but there's no a lot of parking spaces on the street so I'm assuming it fills up quick. On entering it was semi crowded in the booths so I sat at the counter. Sadly I was not greeted on entering. The place felt like nothing has changed since they opened. A very old school vibe keeping things neat and simple. I decided to order a hot dog with chili and onions and a order of fries with gravy. I wanna point out that my food was ready in no longer than two minutes super fast and was hot. The dog it's self was not very snappy but had a good taste. The bun was warm fresh and soft. The chili was tasteful not hearty very soupy like. The fries you could tell where frozen but cooked to perfection. The gravy was a great topping not salty like you would expect. One thing I wanna note is there is no cheese here and that was a bummer to me cause who doesn't love cheese on there hot dog or fries? The prices are great coming in around $2 bucks a dog and $2 bucks for fries. If you drink sodapop your charged by the refill. The waiter was friendly and attentive refilling my water and making sure everything was ok. Overall I'll definitely be returning next time I'm in the area. read more
