Stopped by Shorty's on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. I had three hot dogs with chilli and mustard a drink a small fry. Fries were hot and delicious. The hot dogs were really good too. My only complaint is that they have no cheese but that seems to be their thing and everything tasted great regardless. Our waitress was so fast and kind, she stopped by regularly to make sure we were taken care of. The building looks like it is stuck in the past and to me, that's a good thing! We have found the downtown location to be more consistent in taste and quality than the Wolfdale location. This is one of those acquired tastes that the locals seem to love. Quick service and a somewhat shabby ambience. A good wiener (alberts I would guess) with a watery beef chili heavily tasting of cumin. Most people get them with onion which seems to be a rehydrated onion. Fries and gravy are ok with a salty beef gravy. I have tried the burgers and have not found them to even be worth mentioning. My wife grew up with this Washington landmark and is a big fan. She has also introduced our kids and grandkids so we usually pick a few up when passing through. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped at one of his favorite lunch places when he was in college at W&J. Shorty's is a great pit stop for lunch when you're driving through Washington. The staff was very hospitable and took our orders right away. We both got two hot dogs with chili & onions. Overall I'd give the hot dogs a 3/5. The bun was too soft for my liking, but the chili and onions were very tasty. We couldn't help but notice how friendly everyone was and although we weren't regular customers they treated us as such. I put this restaurant into one of three groups - a place people love, a place people hate, or a place people go to just to say they've been there. I'm in the last group. Took a friend there. Only went there because the Southern Yank Smokehouse down the street was closed due to a water problem. Visited in December 2020, when COVID was still being a raging witch with a capital "B." First, during our visit, none of the workers were wearing a mask. Ordered a chili dog and some fries. Chili dog was OK; it was a "cheap meat" dog, not 100% beef. The chili saved it but it was a sloppy mess. The fries had absolutely no seasoning on them whatsoever. The food is cheap. The workers were nice, but being maskless didn't make the best impression back then especially when the vaccine was not available at the time. Would I go back? Let me put it this way,...I wouldn't go out of my way to say "Hey, I know a place." If I'm in town and offer a dare to whomever I'm with, maybe. read more

My hubby ordered a roast beef sandwich. The hotdogs are just cheap hot dogs on cheap but fresh hot dog buns. They are $1.90 each. What made my dog so good was the chili on top. Again, basic but good. The fries were cooked perfectly and the gravy wasn't overly salty (which I thought they might be). The roast beef sandwich was plain. Just a simple hamburger bun with a slice of roast beef on it. The roast beef was tender. They also serve beer which surprised me bits is cheap beer-Coors Light, PBR kind of stuff. The best part of this is not really the food but watching the dude making hot dogs. The waitresses shout out the orders and he stacks hot dogs up his arm over and over putting on the toppings. My waitress yelled to the front window to the guy manning the hot dog grill that she needed two with everything and then yelled to the kitchen that she needed a small gravy fry. (I heard the same order placed several times in my brief stay so this seems to be the more popular meal.) My food was in front of me within two minutes. The gravy fries were just what I wanted, not overly salted but generously covered with gravy. The hot dogs hit the spot. And while I've seen some people complain about the onions, I liked that they were smaller diced and added more texture than onion flavor (I don't like when the onion overpowers the taste of the other toppings). I was in and out of Shorty's within 15 minutes and my bill was around $7. My waitress was sure to ask if I wanted anything else (including a refill before my cup was empty) before leaving my check. The pricing is very low so that is a plus. We sat at the counter since all the tables were full. You get your hot dog in about 60 seconds flat and fries came close behind. No cheese for you dog, just mustard, ketchup, relish, onions and chili. My dog was salty, not sure why, and the onions are small little mashed pieces that had a strange taste and no onion flavor. My fries were hot and good. The do have gravy for the fries. Food, not so hot ... hot dogs are waaayyy too salty, there wasn't enough chili on them (the chili I did have wasn't very flavorful) and the onions were cut so small it was hard to tell they were even there -- what stood out most to me was SALT. I found the fries to be flavorless. My father-in-law didn't like his fish sandwich either -- had to slather it in tartar sauce. The place is dingy and dirty too ... floor tiles coming up, sticky tables, food crusted floor mats in the doorway, dirty workspaces behind the counter ... makes me wonder what the kitchen looks like ... Parking was a breeze today but there's no a lot of parking spaces on the street so I'm assuming it fills up quick. On entering it was semi crowded in the booths so I sat at the counter. Sadly I was not greeted on entering. The place felt like nothing has changed since they opened. A very old school vibe keeping things neat and simple. I decided to order a hot dog with chili and onions and a order of fries with gravy. I wanna point out that my food was ready in no longer than two minutes super fast and was hot. The dog it's self was not very snappy but had a good taste. The bun was warm fresh and soft. The chili was tasteful not hearty very soupy like. The fries you could tell where frozen but cooked to perfection. The gravy was a great topping not salty like you would expect. One thing I wanna note is there is no cheese here and that was a bummer to me cause who doesn't love cheese on there hot dog or fries? The prices are great coming in around $2 bucks a dog and $2 bucks for fries. If you drink sodapop your charged by the refill. The waiter was friendly and attentive refilling my water and making sure everything was ok. Overall I'll definitely be returning next time I'm in the area. read more

His dad worked at the courthouse & would take my husband to work & they would eat lunch there.
