This is a great autoshop. The team clearly explains the problem and solution. They don't try to add services and only do what is needed. I've taken my car here for 1/2 to cost quotes elsewhere. They answer quickly and thoroughly. The shop in clean and they give a student and healthcare discount ! I've recommended to many friends. read more

I got in my car today and realized I had a flat tire. I was parked less than a block away so I stopped by and the staff was so incredibly kind to me and was able to plug my tire in less than 5 minutes. I highly recommend! read more

I've been bringing my vehicles to Star Motors for over 3 years now, and trust them to take care of any range of problem or repair I have. I bought in to Star Motors being my preferred shop in Cincinnati when we had a transmission issue in my wife's car a few years back. The dealership and a handful of transmission shops told us the transmission was blown, and we needed to replace it (5grand+ by their estimates). The team at Star Motors was able to properly diagnose the issue, and got us back on the road the same day I brought the vehicle in. I've had services from an oil change up to major engine work done by their team and their work and skill has always been consistent. read more

My son goes to UC. He took his car to this establishment because he had had two occurrences where he had trouble getting his car started. After having my son's car for about two hours someone called to tell my son he needed a new timing chain & it would cost $1298.00 plus tax. I told my son to go get his car & hope it started and drive it an hour north where our longtime mechanic is located. After checking the car our mechanic said the timing chain was fine & the car needed a new starter. A little less than $300 later our son was on his way & his car has been running just fine. We will never let our son take his car here again. read more

These guys have shown me a lot of grace when I've been gaslighted by other repair shops. They're good at what they do, and they're honest. What more can you ask for? read more

This place is a scam. We took in our car to get a air conditioning hose replaced after it broke. They wanted almost three hundred dollars for a one hundred dollar part and one hundred fifty dollars to recharge the AC refrigerant... And another two hundred fifty for labor. They refused to give a ball park before seeing it and then when we found a place to do it for 300 dollars, they charged 60 dollars for opening the hood. On top of that, they would not even honor their own student discount. I recommend that you stay away from this place as they are price gouging. Their excuse for the high price is that they called another place and it was even more expensive. Seems they already make payroll for giving a ball park estimate. Good luck if you deal with them as they mostly do not answer the phone or call you back if you do an online booking. Students beware!!! Everyone can do better than this place. read more

I have a horrible experience with mechanics being unreasonably overpriced and sometimes not even completing their jobs. With that being said I was uneasy about going to this local mechanic shop through a recommendation of a friend, but after my short and very pleasant time at Star Motors I can assure you that I'm going back there for all my car problems. The owner Matt was fun to talk to and even let me bring in my own parts for the job to save some cash on my end. I had to replace my struts and I found a pair on sale for Black Friday. Matt was cool with using them and in 2 hours after I dropped my car off, I was back on the road no problem! It's rare that I spend money at a mechanics shop and not only drive away more confident than before but leave knowing my money is supporting a good mechanic. 5/5 thank you Matt! read more

I've dealt with Star for over 20 yrs. They are always fair dealing, smart, willing to help with any problem. I brought them VWs, Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Triumph, and a Chrysler with a Mitsubishi engine. They did them all. Barry Rubenstein is a straight up honest guy, as is everyone who works with him. Convenient to UC. On Upper Vine across from post office. But he would not work on my 1968 Olds 98 455 Rocket convertible. (They know their limits?) read more

I brought my son's new-to-him car to Star Motors for a good going-over once we'd bought the thing. I'll readily admit to not doing my due diligence in getting it to a mechanic BEFORE buying, but figured we'd been in for some amount of repair regardless. I've been going to Star for several years now, and have been happy with their care and advice over the course of 3 cars. Matt and Gabe let me know there were suspension issues, but overall the car looked good. Those issues were a bigger expense than I was hoping for, but their pricing for the work was quite fair. Once we had the car back, we started to notice some odd sounds and behaviors. Long story short, it seemed like the transmission was having issues. There had been no hint of this when we test drove the car or before we dropped it off with Star. We flatbedded the car back to Star, and once they'd confirmed it was indeed a bad transmission, they let me know that the entire repair would be on them because they felt they should have caught it the first time the car was in their hands. I was stunned. Things do go wrong on cars without warning, and had they found the issue the first time, we would have just paid for the repair, period. Matt felt that had they caught the issue, we might've had grounds to go back to the seller. I offered to split the cost. No. I offered to buy them lunch. No. They totally owned the whole thing. They are smart, honest, responsible people, and they have my business forever. You should seriously consider giving them yours. read more

I just had the 60,000 mile service performed on my Subaru by Star Motors. I usually go to a dealership for service but I was over due and traveling so elected to use Star. I felt that I received personalized service from Barry R., the owner. Everything was explained to me clearly and the charges broken down in an understandable manner. The work was finished on time as promised. I know that the 60,000 mile service is costly and found their costs reasonable. On another note while at the shop I watched the owner work with what I would term a "challenging" customer. The lady required a great deal of attention and time. Barry dealt with her in a most gracious manner. He was patient and went out of his way to provide her with the explanations and service that she required (demanded). It was impressive. read more

I came in for my brakes, but was told that I didn't need them replaced yet and was at no charge. Really nice guys, would recommend.

During the holidays my car battery died and despite jumping it, it kept losing charge. I called Star Motors on a Friday night at 4:00pm and after a quick check on my car model, they said yeah, they could accommodate me. It actually was more involved because the battery had leaked out all over the hook-ups and had to be cleaned and the battery needed special stuff to fit properly. It's been so long and I feel bad I have forgotten the guys name, it was the best, friendly service. read more

These fellows officially have my business for life. Most at ease I've ever felt leaving my truck somewhere to get worked on. They did an amazing job and are all around great guys. Very informative. Many moons ago I used star motors exclusively. I was fortunate and started buying new cars and haven't had any mechanical problems for ages. Well those new cars are getting old and my truck started acting up. I'm so glad I went back to star motors instead of the dealership. Prompt, friendly, respectful service. Fair prices. And they spent as much time as I needed to understand my options. They over delivered and I won't be going elsewhere from here forward. Great job! read more

This a great locally owned business. They do an outstanding job. I use them for all my automotive needs.

Star Motors never fails to help with anything gone wrong with any vehicle. They explain everything thoroughly and keep a very, very fair price for it all. I trust them with all issues and will continue to go to their repair shop for any reason. I have never been disappointed by their work or price! Very friendly guys! read more

I brought my car to Star Motors last week (second week of Aug 2014) to get an oil change. My car had been acting up and did need an oil change so I thought once that was done my car would be okay!Well on my way there my car broke down and I got very worried. 25 minutes later I was able to turn it back on and get it to Star Motors. I was pretty upset when I walked in there and explained my situation. They were friendly and said for every half hour it took them to check out my car to see what was wrong it would cost about $40. So i gave them my keys and they told me that once they were done they would call me. An hour goes by - no call. By then, my Father had showed up. He doesn't like when mechanics try to take advantage of their customers (especially his daughter) so he came with me to make sure this mechanic wasn't going to try any funny shit. So we walk back there to find out my bill was only $45. I never got a call like they promised. The manager there (I believe his name was Barry) told me us after carefully examining my car that I would need a new engine. We knew from his body language that this guy wasn't being honest. He couldn't even look my Father in the eye when he said we needed a new engine. Instead, he slaps the bill and explanation on the counter and tells us he just did an engine replacement so we could trust him. I paid my $45 bill and my dad had my car towed to Whitey's. The guys at Whitey's know us and they are great! They checked out my car (for free) and like a trustworthy, real mechanic they showed me exactly what needs fixing and what should be taken care of first and what can wait. Turns out, all i needed was a replacement radiatator! I have a master seal leak that can be dealt with by filling up my oil every time i fill up my gas. Later on i can fix that for $550. And i need new breaks in 10,000 miles. Whitey's says that there are no engine or head gasket problems after taking out the transmission and thoroughly looking at everything. So i do not recommend these guys to anyone! Not even for a simple oil change! I live in Clifton and know many people and have spread the word and will continue to spread it. These guys don't want to help you. They see dollar signs when they look at people in need of help. They take advantage of people and honestly their business would probably be much more successful if they would be honest! read more

During my first winter in Cincinnati, I learned that the road crews like to wait a couple hours before salting and clearing the roads. After driving slowly down a hill, I found that I was unable to stop on a curved road, and ended up running into the curb. I didn't think much of the accident because I was only going 15-20 mph, and the car seemed fine except that it drifted to the right. I took my car in to Star Motors for a wheel alignment, but after an hour or so, Barry called me and said that I needed new struts and a new right control arm, which would cost about $1000. I called Geico, who sent an agent to confirm the damages. The agent recommended that I bring the car into their facilities and told me that the car was unsafe to drive. After several phone calls from Star Motors, Barry convinced me to let him do the repairs, offering to loan me a car so I wouldn't have to pay to rent one. Great. Except when I called for more information about loaner car, the secretary told me Barry was busy, even though I could clearly hear him telling her what to say in the background. Barry eventually got on the phone and told me that he thinks it'd be better if I just to continue to drive my own car. With two professionals giving me conflicting advice, I was not sure who to trust, and I felt manipulated that Barry would go back on his word after only an hour or two. After the repairs were done, my car still drifts to the right. Needless to say, it was a pretty disappointing and costly experience. I take my car to Whities on Madison Rd and am very happy with them. read more

I would give less than one star if I could. They are WAY overpriced and very slow. Marked up parts over twice the coat and kept my car for days. Then 5 hey gave it back with the gas gauge broken. Took it back twice and it still isn't accurate. Never again. There's many other more honest shops. Don't go there! read more

I was a customer at Star Motors for more than 10 years and will never take my car there again. In the fall (2015) I took a Honda CRV into Star to find out why it sometimes didn't start the first time I turned the key. I explained it wasn't every day and could go for a week without a problem and that when that happened it always started on the 2nd or 3rd attempt. I explicitly described how intermittent it was, but that it would ALWAYS start. Star told me I needed a new starter. They replaced it costing me $488. A week later 200 miles from home it happened again and continued to not start on occasion. The problem obviously wasn't fixed. When I took it back in Barry (the owner) told me that he assumed it was the starter because the first time he tried starting the car it wouldn't, but after whacking the starter with a hammer once it did - even though I had explained that it always started on the 2nd or 3rd turn. The next thing he suggested was replacing the ignition switch for another couple of hundred dollars. I said no thanks. Instead, I spoke with another mechanic who previously worked at Star Motors. He looked at a couple of other possibilities (without a charge) and noticed the key was extremely worn down. I went to a Honda dealer and they made a new key for $6.37 and more than 2 months later I haven't had a single problem with the starter. The second issue Today I looked at all the service work done on my '96 Toyota Corolla DX (wagon) at Star Motors so I can describe put it in the 'for sale' notice I writing and find 2 suspicious things. First, the external belts for the engine were replaced two times in 1 1/2 years and I was charged parts + labor each time. When I asked Barry why I'd need to replace the belts so quickly he didn't have an explanation, but said I "authorized" the work and therefore had no reason to complain! Second, 2 months after Star flushed and changed my power steering fluid I had a leak and they wanted to replace the power steering pump and more. While it's possible that something could malfunction in a 2 month period, it's more likely that the problem was related to the service on the car. This may have a little grey area, but given what I know now I'm less likely to believe that. What's been worse is the absolutely arrogant, rude and patronizing attitude of the owner. I had been a loyal customer for years and these experiences now leave me wondering this - how much did I spend on work before that wasn't necessary? read more

Everyone here was friendly and explained what they were doing to my car. I'm not totally sure how the pricing works but it seemed fair enough. The location was super convenient and the repair was done quickly. They even took a look at what else would need to be fixed on my car (the list goes on and on let me tell you). The paperwork at the end took awhile (I don't know how that normally goes down) and I got back from my lunch break a little late but overall I'm happy with the cost and the friendly service. Thanks guys! read more

Although Star Motors had been repairing all my automobiles since the late '70s or early '80s, I've actually purchased every car I've owned there since 1990 (7 total auto purchases). I have been able to count on my regular servicing at Star Motors to keep my vehicles working until I'm ready to sell them back and buy another used car. The mechanics at Star are honest, straightforward, and seriously interested in doing the job right. read more

I would suggest you avoid using this place for car service based on my encounter with the owner, Barry. Couple of years ago I dropped off my car to confirm control arm problem. Barry took the keys without saying a word, but when I returned to pick up the car he charged me $45 for inspection. Why didn't he mention it at drop off? No answer. Would he waive it as a courtesy? No way. He did say that inspection would be "free" if I replace the control arm with their part ($220+labor), supposedly made of pure gold, since the same control arm is sold on Amazon for $50. I said thanks, but no, thanks. He also noted water pump noise (true issue) and offered the timing belt service for $800, which I later paid $400 to an indy mechanic to fix. Overall, the owner made an impression of a dishonest person whom I wouldn't trust my car. read more

Professional, friendly group of people. Gave a great quote - Worked done as promise and quickly. Very Pleased!!!!!!!

I've been going to Star Motors since the mid-'80s. Barry, Dan, and the rest of the staff and mechanics have always been great - knowledgeable, fair, and friendly. I have had all sorts of work done there and never had a problem. I think the following story says something. One time on my way out of town on vacation, with my wife and three kids, in the car, the van felt a little weird (I can't remember exactly what it was), and I wasn't sure I felt safe. I pulled into Star and asked if they could possibly check it out. They immediately put it on the rack, checked the important stuff, and gave us the thumbs up. It probably took less than twenty minutes. When I asked what the charge was, Barry suggested that I buy his crew a pizza for lunch, which I gladly did. Star is a good place staffed by good people! read more
