I went to Shoney's with a friend. The waitress didn't give us a choice of whether we wanted to ordered off the menu or just get food from their bar. My friend wanted to ordered from their menu, however, the waitress told to help ourselves and disappeared. I was asked if I wanted to leave a tip when I got ready to pay the bill. I said yes and she inquired how much I wanted to leave. I replied 20 percent . I was never told how much was the total amount or given the opportunity to see it or given a copy of the transaction. I was charged around 60 percent vs 20 percent. I would suggest having cash for the tip. read more

On Saturday the 19th we stopped in for a late lunch . Grandkids are little and picky eaters , so the buffet is great for them. Food on the buffet was fresh and hot . Unfortunately the restaurant was hotter ! The waitress ( I believe Alice ) moved us to the rear where it was cooler , soon after we were seated. Pros: A local landmark and one of the few surviving Shoney's, in the company's hometown. Excellent service at breakfast from Calvin. Fun people watching. Sentimental value for those like me who grew up going there. Delicious rice and sausage on breakfast buffet. I only left one star simply because I had to rate it somehow, but negative 5 star would more fitting. I follow the page on Facebook for Charleston wv and surrounding areas places to eat and someone must have been paid to leave good feedback because it made me want to try to have an old time Shoneys experience again and I traveled over 30 miles and it was the absolute worst! Waiter was nice but told us the Buffett bar food was far better than the kitchen so we did that and just had to leave the food on the table. I didn't want to even pay the bill it was inedible and no taste, potatoe soup watery, it's hard to mess up cooked cabbage but they certainly did! My SO wanted to see if he could eat something as he had taken his meds and needed something and just had to leave it there. I approached 2 managers doing paper work at a table and they stared at me as tho they were shocked! I would have rather tried the fresh pet dog food than to ever go here again. I attempted to leave feedback on the Charleston page and they removed my post. Don't follow this page for honest reviews because you're not going to get it. We used to enjoy Shoney's years and years ago when we lived in the South. This particular Shoney's was right next to where we were getting our car repaired, so we thought it would be a nice place to get lunch. This was NOT in any way the Shoney's we remembered. They had a sad buffet in the middle of the dining room, $10.99 for a bunch of terrible-looking food I wouldn't pay $3.99 for. We asked the waitress for a menu instead and she told us they didn't have menus, but recited from memory some sandwiches and burgers they could offer. I am not a fan of shoneys, I should start by saying i was made to go by a family member. So i didn't have high hopes to begin with and to be honest the food was sub par and the wait rime was a lil ridiculous. That being said Amanda the manager, deserves some praise. This whole town has been hit with the damn super flu, and this restaurant was no different. we saw a total of three employees, including Amanda! She was sitting people, taking orders, serving food, filling the bar, you name it. And not once did she complain, get upset, or let it show to the customers! I visited Shoney's restaurant last night. The quality of the food was satisfactory. However, it came to our attention that my brother has a peanut allergy when he detected the scent of peanut oil on his chicken. Moreover, the staff provided misleading information by claiming it was vegetable oil. Regrettably, they made errors in four of our orders. Additionally, the staff's performance fell short as they were dishonest and mishandled the orders. I would advise against patronizing this establishment. There was ants in the corner where I was sitting it was just gross I recommend not eating there it was not worth it for 60$ Don't go there. read more

The Case of the Missing Manager It was late, and several people were lined up in the anteroom waiting to be seated... finally a beleaguered waitress appeared and announced she had been looking everywhere for her manager but he could not be found. Managers are evidently important when closing a shoneys to balance the till and oat out tips. She told us all to sit anywhere... eventually she brought us a single menu, being unable to find where the others were hidden. And so it went -- she decided I wanted my burger well done without asking me, I would have appreciated more Swiss and more mushrooms on the Swiss mushroom burger. Miles before we reached the highway exit for this Shoney's, my father reminisced of when his parents would take him and his siblings to this particular Shoney's when they were kids on their way home from Viriginia. "It's not as good as it used to be", he said, after we ate. I was not impressed with the food quality at all. It wasn't horrible, but it was very good. I found hair in some of the food on my plate, which is always a big turnoff. We'll try Ponderosa next door or drive a few more miles and hit the Shoney's that's across the Ohio River. I am a fan of all you can eat buffets. I had never heard of Shoney's before. And my friend said we just have to go! My mother loves this places and so do all my friends! The unique thing about this all you can eat restaurant. Is the fact that you can also order something off the menu! We went twice while I visited Charleston and I opted for the all you can eat buffet both times. There's just something fun about going around and picking whatever you want. I was able to have turkey here and baked steak there. Corn, crab, salad, and whatever else sounded good to me at that time. Some of the food I had tasted like it did sit out too long. But we just let them know and they whipped up a new batch of whatever it was and put it out. If you don't want to settle for the dessert that's already out. You can order something off the menu. We were seated so that the hot and very noisy fan from their new soft serve ice cream machine blew directly on us. The burger didn't taste fresh. Two of the stalks in the women's bathroom didn't have working locks. The waitress was OK but took FOREVER to refill the drinks. One reason I eat at Shoney's at all is nostalgia. I had the breakfast buffet and coffee, as is my wont. The food was hearty and hot, and sated my carnivorous cravings. The coffee was hot and bitter, like the tears I shed when paying my bills, and the staff was attentive and cordial, unlike myself in social gatherings. I've been going to Shoney's restaurant for fifty years, longer than I've been alive, and they rarely disappoint my gustative requirements. Of particular note was the kindness shown by the staff, in refilling my coffee. Not only was my waitress attentive and perspicatious of my coffee requirements, but another waitress saw my lowered level of java, and, like God on high granting succor to the Israelites wandering the desert in their time of need, refilled my coffee. read more

I gave them two stars because it was late and they were open. I was all downhill from there. There seemed to be a shortage of waitresses and kitchen help. At least a shortage of working help. The restaurant was not that busy, but as long as it took for someone to come over and take our order, you would think there wasn't a seat left in the house. I am not usually a salad person but it was late and I wanted something light, and I since I have an extreme dislike for chunky iceberg lettuce and tomatoes, I thought the nice, chopped Cobb pictured on the menu would do the trick. Things went very wrong the first time when I saw a waitress making a salad by pulling ingredients off the salad bar. When the "garden salad" was delivered I explained that a Cobb should be chopped and that several ingredients were missing. There is a trip back to the kitchen, and then, with plate in hand, another waitress tries her hand at a cobb, and, like the other one, comes back with an unchopped "garden salad". With "browned for extra flavor" iceberg lettuce instead of romaine, tomato quarters, sliced cucumbers, a sour tasting "I have been left on this food bar all week" corn relish which came in a small side dish instead of worth the salad as if the waitress knew it had gone bad in the late 1990's. She tried, but you could tell that the leadership was crap, so I couldn't blame her too much for not understanding why the salad should look like the picture in their menu. No beverage refill for me, because, well, the average service just wasn't present. Then there was the guy in the dirty, white shirt, at the register who appeared to be a manager. Wow. What an amazing example of poor customer service skills. He was a plethora of excuses, including the standard "I didn't make I, I didn't see it, that is how we make it here, I,m a meat eater, well that picture isn't really real food, I don't eat salads, that's how we always do it..." everything but a sincere apology. He did take a tiny amount off of the bill to shut me up, but I doubt if he could comprehend that you can't make a Cobb salad, that looks like the picture in your menu, without chopping it. I was warned no to go, but I had had a good experience at one in Nashville not to long ago, so I thought "why not?" Basically, this place I'd kind of a train wreck. We saw a woman sweeping the floor and we are not sure how she left so much dirt that the broom brushed right over. Then we watched the refill of the lettuce y watching the server open a bag and dump it into the old, browning lettuce. I guess she didn't feel the need to at least rinse off the next strain of E.
