A little while ago, we, too, had trouble getting a response to calls. Maybe they were busy, but this time from an email sent to the guys showing up to work here was less than 24 hours. They did a superb job! They covered the plants and anything else that might have gotten damaged by falling branches. The big ash looks great; perfect shaping. They had no problem adding a couple of other small items that I needed done. They cleaned up better than the yard has looked in weeks and put everything back where it was. Here and gone in less than 90 minutes. By contrast, our neighbor had a BIG redwood trimmed last summer that was right next to our fence. The tree guy just let the branches fly and they BURIED bushes and trees and other plants on our side of the fence and he didn't even come and get rid of them! He left them there for us to deal with! We were out of town and our housesitter was burdened with this. I don't know who that was, but it was most definitely NOT Shipman. These guys were great! You couldn't pay me enough to get me 20 or 30 feet up a tree, hanging by ropes and swinging a chain saw around. read more

I had this company trim three podocarpus trees. When Matt came out to give me an estimate, I gave him specific instructions on what I wanted done. When his crew came out a few days later, I again gave the foreman directions on what I wanted done. Besides hiring this company, I made the mistake of going into my garage and not monitoring their work. When I did check out their progress, I was shocked at what they had done to my trees. To say they had butchered them would be a compliment. They had not come close to following my instructions. I was so infuriated that I couldn't say a word because I knew the only thing that would come out of my mouth would be profanity. Shortly afterwards, I called the company and requested to speak to Matt. I was advised that he was not there and the female who I spoke to asked if she could assist me. I explained what had happened to her and requested she have Matt call me. She advised me that she would and asked me to send her photos of the trees. This all took place approximately one month ago and I am still waiting for Matt or someone else to contact me. When Matt came out to give me the estimate, he also provided a business card identifying himself as a retired Navy pilot. To achieve that position, I would think that he had completed the Naval Academy and learned many things regarding having character and taking responsibility for his actions. They may have paid my neighbors truck but didn't stump grind the second tree stump clearly. I will never recommend such a company threatening their customers especially with a mom in real estate good friends in politics. Less than satisfactory as they were hired to cut down our trees and stump grind both trees After they hit another truck and were working on that incident paying that truck The second tree was not stump grinded as paid for Owner was called when we found out while doing other work on this yard Matt ghosted my wife after telling her he didn't cut that tree as it wasn't the one close to house. Photos to show there is no other tree and it was this one that a 7 ft stump was left We showed Matt pictures of his truck and tree and still would not come back to complete job nor respond to us for over a month Now he calls a month later and demanding my wife to take down the post or else with threatening her. Had 5 queen palms trimmed - a few fronds and seed pods. One climber left spike marks all the way up the front of the most visible tree. Clean-up afterwords was very poor. Had 2 fronds each in 2 trees that buckled and are hanging (1 tree after 5 days, the other after 2 weeks). Now 2 weeks later and another palm has buckled fronds. These trees have NEVER done this. Good prices but the customer service is horrible at best. After knocking down my fence after servicing a property they had to be told multiple times to come out to put the fence back up. The owner called me and lectured me how he has his real estate license and brokers (news flash, so do I, that's not impressive) and alleged that I was asking for a free fence. The company left the fence in worse condition, when I was simply asking for them to simply prop the fence so its no longer leaning and therefore a liability to fall on a kid. Repairing a fence is basic, but out of principle, I requested them to fix what they broke. As anyone who works in customer service should know this. Also, lets be real, the owner more than likely does NOT have his brokers license or salesperson as it's unrelated to cutting trees. The people were highly skilled, the Supervisor and Foreman, Chris and Leo, were good leaders, the equipment was modern and in top condition. They made sure all the utilities were marked by each company. They are licensed and fully insured. I watched for a while. It was a well-oiled process. These guys know trees! We had a surprise tree down in our front yard the day after the Fourth and we thought for sure one of the 6" shell boomers got to it but nah it was diseased and old. The quote was on the money and the crew very professional and knowledgeable. We had them look at our big tree out back. Turns out what my realtor said was an Oak is an Ash! They are good tree trimmers with good equipment. HOWEVER you must be home and supervise. Left to their own devices they butchered 2 beautiful mature shrubs, totally removed 2 flower beds of verbena and lantana, All my Spring bulbs, just emerging, gone. THIS IS NOT THE SAME COMPANY WE ALL USED TO LOVE! The new owner really sucks. He wanted to charge my mom more money for doing the same job Jeff shipman always did. Jeff had quality work that was expensive but you didn't mind paying bc Jeff was knowledgeable and did amazing work. This new owner wants to come and cut the trees up to ugly mushroom tops without thinning but still charge the same. My four palms are fine. But I have five other trees that require thinning. Only two of those trees look awesome bc they were done by Jeff's old worker. He works for this company now. Wish he had his own business bc he is so good. The new owner told the workers they were taking too long and called them back to the office. So I have one tree that wasn't cut bc he wanted to just hack it up and I said no. It's sad when a new owner takes over but doesn't take pride in his business bc he just wants to make money ripping people off. I DONT RECOMMEND THIS NEW OWNER! he wants to come out to re-evaluate and charge my mom more money for a job that shipman would have done for the same price. $1995 is a lot of money to get crappy work. read more

Jeff came and gave estimate to take down and grind stump of a 7 year old pistachio tree. His secretary said Jeff was about 2 weeks booked up, so I thought I'd shop around in the meantime. I got quotes from Beningo's and Sanchez Brothers; and though both companies were both very nice and professional, Jeff was $50 cheaper and $100 cheaper than both of the other companies. Jeff gave a little discount since I was paying cash, thanks! His crew were nice and professional, total time to knock down the tree and grind the stump was about 25 minutes. It is never a good customer service plan to come to a customer's home and be argumentative. That's exactly what happened to us at the end of our job when we needed a couple more branches removed to fully complete our job as written in the estimate. Make sure if they write "Property Line Tree Trim" that you know exactly how many branches that includes. Asking for one more might set the guy off. That being said... the work was otherwise completed in half the time estimated and was cleaned up nicely, but the taste left in our mouth after this interaction would keep us from recommending them. I have been a faithful customer of Jeff Shipman's Tree Service for over 20 years. I understand he sold the business recently. I had them out in January 2020 to trim some redbuds and asked to have some Japanese Maples trimmed at the same time. They recommended that I wait until the fall, due to too much heat exposure too quickly. So, I called at the end of October. First the estimate seemed high to me, which they did adjust. They were to arrive 11/23/2020 in the afternoon but no call. I thought it odd, but figured they were delayed. About 2:30pm, I checked my email and found an email from about an hour earlier, stating that they had an emergency and wanted to reschedule. When I shared that I felt the situation deserved a phone call and was told that my line rang busy... a cell phone number. I needed these trees trimmed so that I could hang holiday lights. I told him about that before making the appointment. I appreciate them trying to accommodate me but they should have told me that they couldn't get it scheduled and I would have waited until January. Unfortunately, I can no longer recommend this Company and if I were Jeff Shipman, I'd ask to have my name removed as they don't represent the same quality or customer serves as in the past. read more

Hired this company to reduce the height of a WAY overgrown orange tree and to thin out one of my Myrtles today. Well. Not only did they do exactly what i needed them to do...but the crew was over the TOP fantastic. They hauled out the entire mess...including fruit...ANDDDDDDD there is not ONE leaf or piece of debris to be found. They were friendly, professional...and even with such a huge project, they were done--start to finish in 40 minutes. They even covered my gate and fencing with huge tarps to avoid marring the wood as they hauled out the big stuff...i was pleasantly surprised. the price could NOT be beat...very very fair!!
