Oh man - It pains me to give Shipley Do-Nuts a 3-star rating because their donuts and kolaches are delicious and I was SO HYPED for this location. Coming from Houston, I had certain expectations for this new location in Metairie. This location just isn't living up to the standards of the Shipley Do-Nuts I grew up going to. I have been twice - once being the first Saturday they opened, which was very very hectic, but I gave them a pass. It was their first Saturday after all. Complaints: First time going the cake do-nut machine was broken. Second time a month later they said, "sorry you have to get here earlier for cake do-nuts we're all out." SAY WHAT ?! Make more?!? It was only 8:54 am. BOTH times they didn't have any kolaches available except the boudin kolaches, which aren't real kolaches...sorry Louisiana. I want this establishment to succeed. They need more hustle and foresight. If you notice you're running out of a popular item start making more before you run out!! Anyway, the do-nuts are still delicious. They're just not as sweet when you get to the counter and you get the "sorry we're out" or "sorry there will be more in ten minutes" line. Definitely a great place to grab some kolaches as they are widely known for them around the country. The kolaches are always fresh and hot when you order. The do-nuts are good when are bought fresh, but my order was a bit dry. The New Orleans metro area needed a Shipley franchise and am glad there is finally one in city. I've only been here one time as customer service was very good. I will be back to grab more kolaches when I'm around the area. Hopefully I can get some fresh do-nuts as well. read more

Great service! I am a Lyft driver and I picked up a rider named Alexis. Well this wasn't just your avg rider. She convinced me to go back and try the donuts. ( Did I say I hadn't eaten a donut in over a year)Alexis gave me a 5 min commercial on the company, quality, and why I should try one. Well after I got 1, I called the wife we drove back and bought a dozen. Fast forward....today I pick up Alexis and I am headed back. We went in for a dozen donuts, and we saw the advertisement for a smoothie. My son picked out the strawberry banana smoothie with no whip. While they made the smoothie we selected a mixed dozen. The young lady assisting us adroitly asked if we wanted chocolate iced with sprinkles or no sprinkles when I picked out the chocolate iced donuts. Then she pointed out the different sprinkle choices available this valentines weekend. A couple of donuts were disappointing. The raspberry filled was a generic fruit taste (kook-aid jelly said my husband), and a couple donuts had huge air pockets in them. The biggest disappointment was the smoothie. My son had a couple sips before he offered it to anyone else who was interested. I tasted it, and it had too much milk to be a smoothie. The worst aspect was the artificial taste of strawberry-banana. No banana taste that I could discern; it was more like a frozen bath and body works candle. So stick with the donuts. read more

It's honestly a shame that it even had to come to this. Huge Shipley fan, but it'll take a good while before I give them anymore of my money. I ordered three of the Mardi Gras donuts, two sausage and cheese kolaches, and an apple juice and it was $25. I didn't really mind at first because I ordered multiple items. The two women working today seemed less than interested in doing their jobs, or even being kind for that matter. The older woman was helping another customer when the other one brought my bags to the counter. I mistakenly clicked the "no receipt" button and grabbed my stuff and went to the car. I was so excited to bite into my favorite kolache! I immediately notice it's only one and I was like well, I paid for two but I do need to fit in a dress later this month so maybe it's for the best. Well I was just as surprised to chomp into boudin instead of sausage and cheese. My friend saw the disappointment on my face as I had been looking forward to this moment for days. I went back inside to kindly ask for the two sausage and cheese kolaches I paid for, since I was inadvertently given a boudin kolache. The younger woman then rolled her eyes, looked at the older woman, and took her sweet time to grab the actually items I ordered. THEN, as I am standing at the counter waiting for my order, the older woman proceeds to insist I return the bitten-into boudin kolache I had in my hand. She reached her arm out and snapped at me to hand it over. I was pretty heated at this point so, naturally, I said "I took a bite out of it. It's either going in the trash or I'm going to eat it." Never in my life have I experienced a food establishment ask for the item they wrongly gave you back. Not to mention, aren't we in calendar year three of a global pandemic? I was completely blown away by the demands to return the partly eaten kolache. I know finding employees is extremely difficult nowadays, especially ones that actually want to work and have positive attitudes. This location is a welcomed addition to the neighborhood. It is well situated on Metairie Rd and easy to get to. The space is well designed for the flow of the line. For a new popular chain they have been handling the lines fairly well. The service is friendly and most importantly the do-nuts are pretty good. It's seems everyone has a preference of texture and density. This is a nice middle ground not too dense, but still feels substantial enough. My favorite has been the cinnamon twist. It's has tons and tons of cinnamon flavor. I haven't tired their full offering, but I look forward to trying kolaches, beignets and more. Growing up in Texas it brought back memories just walking inside. The kolaches with sausage and cheese were spot on and just like I remembered. The donuts weren't bad however I must say they taste nothing like they should. Personally every single donut I bit into tasted like a beignet to me. My wife, mom and sister all tried the dozen I had and all agreed. I mean they do make beignets as well so mixing them in the fryer could've caused it. However it was still good. I'm a die-Shipley's fan. In my hometown of Alexandria, we have 3 locations because they're just that good. It's a tradition for someone to pick up a couple boxes of glazed donuts and the free bag of donut holes every Sunday for the church congregation. That being said, I was ecstatic when news broke that we were getting one in southern Louisiana, meaning that I didn't have to wait til a visit home to get my fix. Now, I have a couple of complaints. First off, what really pisses me off are a few of the cashiers/ servers. On three of my visits, I've been served by these two young ladies who are frankly rude and seemingly incapable. I don't understand what their deal is. Yes, this is a new location. Sure, there can be a rush but hell, I've served crowds double in size at 6 AM, and didn't need an assistant to make the donuts. I've worked at Shipley's in high school, and it's just like any friendly service job, be peppy, be kind, and be quick. Simple as hell, but every time they've waited on me, they are extremely rude, and take more than 15 minutes to gather a 3 item order which is sitting right behind them. The second thing that really bums me is how it never fails, no matter what time of day, they never have the donuts I want. I'm always waiting. When I worked at Shipley's. We'd get there at 2 AM and start the day. I've been there when they've just opened, and there was nothing I wanted. How does that happen? Short story: Last time I was in there, I was waiting for my kolache, which when I ordered, the nice young man said it would be 15-20 minutes. I waited that amount of time before asking about the kolaches, and they still weren't ready. No big deal. Waited another 20 minutes and then finally the kolaches were done and were being placed on the rack. My server was busy since it was National Donut Day and extremely busy, so I asked the two girls who I mentioned previously if they would get my order because A. They were standing around, and B. They were the closest to get access to. After asking me twice if I paid and me offering my receipt, they refused and told me to wait. Okay, now after an hour of waiting for 1 kolache and 1 chocolate filled donut, I asked again because they were once again doing absolutely nothing. I watched her go talk to my original server who was super busy, and then she went up to the older woman who must be the team leader. My sister was in line for a second time to get a coffee, after that, she told me how the girl told the woman she was annoyed by me and wanted her to do something because I wouldn't stop bothering her. At that point, the older woman came over with my order, and even added a second kolache for my trouble which wasn't necessary at all. I just wanted better service. I reported that incident, and they're still there. The girl, I swear rolled her eyes at me when I came in. Because of that, I let the couple behind me go ahead and I waited for a different server. Prices- what do you expect, rent ain't cheap in New Orleans so expect the prices to be more expensive here than other locations. I sure miss my 6.99 box of a dozen filled donuts. At other location, you also get a free bag of donut holes if you buy two dozen. Here, prices are a little inflated. Now on the donuts & kolaches. Twice I've gone and both were undercooked, which happens. They are very busy. They replaced my order of course. Any other day, you can come here for the freshest hot glazed donuts that just melt in your mouth. I wouldn't go to any other donut shop in my life if I had it my way. Forget those gourmet, fancy donuts they serve anywhere else. Shipley's makes donuts like they should be made. Y'all don't have competitors in my eyes. Anyways, to wrap it up. Great donuts. I swear by the chocolate filled and the sausage and cheese Kolache. The service on the other hand, get some harder working teenagers. I busted my ass in high school to make minimum wage. No job is easy, but there are more diligent and deserving workers. So please re-evaluate. But forget the service you guys, just come here for he donuts. No matter how sh*tty of an experience I might have had, I'm sure going to keep coming back for more. read more

I was excited about the addition of a new player in the donut arena in Metairie. I got 2 apple fritters, 1 Lemon and 1 Cherry donut. Although they were good. They were not the amazing product I was led to believe. They are no better than Tastee. The Cherry donut didn't have cherry flavor. Don't know if I'm the only one that noticed that the somewhat scruffy donut maker in the rear area is grabbing the donuts off the trays with his bare hands. That guy is wearing a beat up looking tee shirt. Shouldn't he at least have an apron on? I have a long history with Shipley's Donuts. I have eaten them many many times in the Mississippi Delta. I only like them hot! You can only get them at one place in Southeast Florida. I'm in northeast Florida. So I planned a trip to Metairie. About a week ahead of time I called the Metairie Store and asked when they had them " hot". I was told to be there no later than 10AM. So on a monday morning I prance in at 8AM. I order a dozen "hot" donuts.I get fresh but not hot. I ate 2 and left the rest for the maids at the motel. I GIVE UP!!!!! read more

We are new to New Orleans and our kids have been asking me everyday to do a tour of Nola donuts over the next month. Yesterday, was our first day for this sometimes after school treat (unless you count the obligatory visit to Cafe Du Monde, which was incredible). Shipley's was recommended by a local and was well worth the drive to Metairie from uptown. I went at around 2:15 which is important because most donut shops are pretty slim pickings by that time of day. The store racks were filled with all of the choices they offer (except glazed, which is probably what they are known for since they were sold out) and it was hard to choose. The sweet employee behind the counter was a delightful change to the otherwise irritated restaurant staff we have met so far in Nola. She made sure to carefully place the perfectly decorated bullseye and chocolate glazed donuts in separate bags for each of my three children, knowing full well that each child likes their OWN bag. I didn't even ask. She also carefully chose the best Kolaches (sausage and sausage/cheese) for them. As for the taste test? The Kolaches were a huge, unexpected hit! The boys loved the cheese and sausage and the girl preferred the plain. I heard from the server that the jalapeño and cheese and sausage is one of their best selling, but we didn't try it this time. The hard to please (when it comes to donuts) girl thought the chocolate glazed was soft and delicious, didn't taste stale or cooked in old oil like some places. The bullseyes were equally as yummy and the boys loved the candy corn on top. Also, the donuts were just the right size for a treat. Usually, I find donuts to be too large and filling. One star: product was delivered courteously and cheerfully Two stars : establishment was clean Three stars: the selection was plentiful and nicely displayed Four stars: the kids liked it and ate all of it. Only reason it's not five stars is because our minds were not blown to the moon and back. Yummy donuts, but not mind-blowing. Shipley's is my personal favorite place for donuts in Nola. The glazed donuts are hot 9/10 times and they are delicious! The chocolate covered donuts are my favorite. Donuts were really good but the tables and floors were filthy and the people behind the counter were talking and on their phones- not too busy to clean up a bit. Why the kolache inconsistencies though? They were perfect before they changed them to smaller versions. The sausage was so much more flavorful before and now it tastes like almost nothing. This was my favorite place to get kolaches. :( read more
