The used bookstore has become (like the indie record store) a bit of a relic from years past,…read morealthough honestly there's not much love lost for me considering the majority of them were little more than homes for discarded Harlequin romances and other disposable fiction paperbacks. Luckily, a few booksellers have managed to survive the carnage in the book industry, and the very existence of this store is a testimonial to the fact that (hopefully!) those booksellers with something "special" will continue to survive. Despite all of the convenience that Amazon offers, there's just something about browsing the shelves in a store like this that will never compare to anything online. If you love books, it would almost be impossible to leave this place without something you didn't even know existed, but you ended up "needing". The selection is absolutely superb, with particular attention to quality works on history, theology, and philosophy. (I haven't ever seen the full 3-volume set of Prescott's "The Conquest and Mexico and Peru" before, and was drooling over it -- although the $250 price tag had me leaving without it.) Overall, this is a wonderful little spot and I'm glad to see that it has survived up into the year 2015. I was followed around by three different employees constantly asking me if I needed help and staring me down. Even if I look at the situation differently they don't even allow people the space, freedom or even privacy to choose what they need themselves or the chance to ask for help if they need it. Instead they all hound you down like you're in a clothing department store and make you feel uncomfortable. Especially the guy working there with the gray/white hair was orchestrating all of the employees around. Another reviewer mentioned this and yes there is a strong atmosphere of intolerance, paranoia, judgement and deeper under lining issues. I was standing in line behind a gentleman and when it was my turn at the counter, the guy with the gray/white hair told the lady working the counter to leave the counter and told another lady to come check me out which was odd and he had a very nasty look on his face. Then the lady at the counter asked me if I had a membership and I said no, She then says "ok don't worry we are not pushy" and then proceeds to laugh and say "at least I don't think so". They know exactly what they are doing. If a spiritual store is worried about people stealing or whatever then they you are NOT the real deal and it is a reflection of who they are and what they are actually doing. If you are alarmed or uncomfortable by a women of color coming into your shop while your shop is named Goddess/Isis you should NOT be in business! This place is not sacred or safe. This sacred space is comparable to the Library of Alexandria. The books of the sages and the seers are always found here. Everything here is Holy. The owner Tim is the wisest and most knowledgeable men I've ever met. There is no book or topic he isn't able to teach you. To me this bookstore is where I can forget the hustle and stress of the world and open my mind and heart to the holy of holys. Shining Lotus Metaphysical Bookstore has a website with all their books, sacred artifacts, sacred stones and amazing jewelry at prices you won't find anywhere else. If you have spiritual needs, you will find a home here. A gentle and healing home like a gentle mist, a soft rain and a gentle wind. I could write a book about how this place has transformed my life. Perhaps the book would be too long for anyone to read. Thank you Tim, Justin and Gayle for having a holy place where everyone can come home. read more

This was my first visit and I won't be back. I was excited to find this place but very disappointed in the customer service. No one offered to help or welcome me. Several employees hanging around yet no one available to answer a simple question. I was in there for 30 minutes or more while 2 kids ran around grabbing different rocks and putting them in pouches. When they left with their moms I thought maybe I can talk to someone now....NOT. A man came in the store and was greeted immediately. He started talking about the book he is writing...All political BS... Certainly was not what I wanted to hear. I was there in a positive mood and left feeling negative and a bit angry. read more

I am changing my original review to one star because I no longer believe it accurately reflects my…read moreexperience. At one point, I trusted Carol White Bear deeply. I spent hours speaking with her, confided in her, respected her guidance, and regarded her as someone safe. I also supported her professionally in a significant way because I genuinely believed in her and in the work she was doing. That trust is gone. What changed my opinion was not a single disagreement. It was discovering that the compassion and understanding I believed I was receiving directly did not match what was being said about me elsewhere. That matters profoundly when someone works in a profession built on intuition, trust, emotional vulnerability, and guidance. I was going through an extraordinarily difficult period in my life, including serious medical circumstances and significant emotional strain. Carol knew that. She also knew how vulnerable I was and how much weight I placed on her perspective. Despite that, I later learned that she had been expressing judgments about me to my wife while interacting with me very differently in private. When I became hurt by something that happened, I did not attack her, publicly shame her, or retaliate. I reached out directly and asked if we could meet because I wanted to understand what had happened and repair the relationship. She told me she was busy and would check her schedule. She never contacted me again. Nearly two months later, however, she had no difficulty reaching out to my wife to request changes to marketing materials that I had personally created through my own business. My wife does not run my creative business. That moment told me everything I needed to know. Ignoring someone when they ask to repair a personal rupture is one thing. Deliberately bypassing that same person when you later want something related to their professional work is another. It felt dismissive, avoidant, and profoundly disrespectful. I gave an enormous amount of my time, creative labor, professional expertise, encouragement, and trust to this relationship without expecting anything in return. I did so because I believed I was supporting someone who had positively affected my life. I now understand that relationship very differently. The most painful part is not that Carol and I are no longer close. It is realizing that someone I once regarded almost as a maternal figure could know how deeply I trusted her, know how much I was struggling, accept the generosity I extended, speak critically about me behind the scenes, and then avoid a direct conversation when I asked for one. For a profession that depends so heavily on trust, discernment, authenticity, and emotional integrity, that discrepancy is impossible for me to overlook. People are free to form their own opinions and have their own experiences. This is mine. I once recommended Carol enthusiastically. I no longer recommend her at all.

He's in his final semester of school before defending his dissertation and obviously loves the written word. But between sage piles for exorcising spirits to stacked candles meant for exorcising whatever is straight in a man, I felt there was a vibe of anger and resentment in a room that should've been welcoming, given the warm fairy lights framing the children's section. Feminism sits in a collage of frames on the lower ceiling, but it felt as fake as the plastic casing it. Books should be a safe place for everyone, without bias.
