Last week, a friend and I took our 1st pole dancing class at Shimmy Shimmy Dance Studio in Medford. We had the absolute best time. I laughed the whole class and what a work out! Heather is so amazing! And she was so patient with me as I am not the most coordinated LOL! If anyone has ever thought about trying pole dancing, definitely go to Shimmy Shimmy. No clue how this place has a 4/5 stars. Guess I'm only basing my experience off one class, hopefully that just means I took the wrong one. My friend wanted to try Belly Dancing. She saw that it was $15 to try, so we both set a day to go and booked it from their website, class starts at 6:15pm on a Monday. We get there, and there's a front room where you leave your shoes and they do have chairs to sit. She has you sign a paper and you're on your way forward into the "dance" room. Now they kept the room dark the entire time. No idea why lights weren't on, this is not a club - this is a gym class and I would love to see what the heck I'm doing. The belly dance teacher, Heather - started us at exactly 6:15. She started us with simple belly dance steps, which was actually much harder than I thought it would be, so I thought I was getting a decent workout at first. She didn't seem like she had a personality. I've taken HUNDREDS of classes and she was the first teacher I've ever come across who wasn't motivating her class. It wasn't fun, she didn't smile, just didn't feel like she connected with everyone to make them WANT to be here. Maybe it was a bad day, who knows, but sorry that happened on a day a Yelper came in. We stopped belly dancing after about 20 minutes into class, then she said she was gonna start an ab workout. I thought okay, guess it's just a "break" then we'll get back into it. She made us do three different crunches then hold, and repeat for 15 minutes. Now I'm looking at the clock and already know we're not getting back into belly dancing. Following abs, we start our end-of-workout stretch. The time was now 6:50pm. We stretched, she said good class and to wipe down our mats and put them away..... I looked at the time and walked out of this class at 7:05pm. I was dumbfounded and couldn't even believe what just happened. I pay for Belly Dancing and only get 20 out of 45 minutes of it - from which is suppose to be an HOUR CLASS. That's stealing peoples money and it's FALSE advertising. I would never recommend coming here, don't waste your time OR money. read more

I found Shimmy through Groupon: $99 for an unlimited month of dance classes. I signed up in mid-December and my month is up tomorrow. I can proudly say: I LOST A PANT SIZE! I intend to stay on to continue improving my body. Heather, the instructor, has been a dancer since she was 5. Her dream is to become a full-time dance instructor. Her passion for dance is evident in her classes. She is very patient, encouraging, and will show you again and again how to perfect a move. She holds classes 7 days a week, mainly night classes. Thursday mornings she has bellydancing and all-level pole back to back. She also has a lot of weekend class options. Before beginning any class, Heather has everyone stretch; at the end of each class there's a cool-down/stretch again. Bellydancing is fast-paced and really targets your midsection. I believe this class helped me immensely to slim down my waistline. You'll definitely sweat in this class. Coin skirts & veils are provided. The studio also offers pole, zumba, kettlebells, yoga and ballet fitness. Everyone who I have met at the studio is super-nice and supportive of one another. This was for a bachelorette party and was the perfect addition to the weekend. Grace was so sweet and fun. She showed us some cool moves and a little routine. Came here twice using a groupon! Tried pole dancing the first time it's fun but I got a few bruises and it's common to get them after the first time. Second time I tried hammock and it was so much better! It was easier and more fun! Without the bruises. Heather is really great! It's a bit far from me or else I would come here more often! Went for a pole party last night it was very fun the instructor heather is very experienced was very fun and very patient our pole party was supposed to begin at 8:15 pm however with traffic we got there around 8:35 and the instructor pare rely waited for us and everything was ready when we got there . There is plenty of space they play very good music to get you in the mood and of your having a girls night out event you can bring your own wine and food and she will set you up with a nice table after the party she takes plenty of pictures. I started Shimmy Shimmy just over one year ago. I wanted to try something different . I needed to exercise for health reasons and I wasn't motivated to join the usual gym. I always wanted to try some kind of dance lessons as an adult and the pole was at the top of my wish list. But to be quite honest the stereotype of what the typical pole dancer is or was discouraged me. I saw a groupon and took the plunge! I thought trying it is better than not! I was a bit tenative because I was overweight, non athletic, not graceful, not good at dancing (even know I did it for years) and hadn't worked out in 3 years or so regularly. I thought, what am I doing? Then I started. It has taken me awhile, alot of dedication, and alot of patience to do it. And what keeps me going is that it is very challeging which is good because the possibilities are endless in what you can achieve once you dedicate yourself. I like that not only does Shimmy Shimmy have pole classes, they have burlesque chair dance which is using a chair and doing different moves with that. Also, belly dancing, kettle bells, special events such as yoga relaxation sessions and private parties for whatever occasion. You can rent her space, you can have a private party at your own location, or you can have one at hers! All of the classes have different aspects which bring all around fitness and a chance for everyone to achieve at whatever your level. The most important thing is that you have to give yourself time and allow yourself to achieve. Some do it more easily than others and others take longer, but your effort is fruitful. The number one aspect of this studio is its owner, Heather. She clearly is passionate about what she does and whats nothing else than to bring this to others. She is a professional in every sense of the word. She is very humble in the way she teaches and supports each of her students to achieve their best. She is also an incredible performer and makes it look easy but breaks it down to the most easist level so anyone can achieve it. If it wasn't for heather, I would have not stayed dedicated so long! She ensures she is there for her students always. I want you to know that my opinion is independent and I scoped out different venues, options, etc. I have no affiliation with Heather except for my attendance at the studio. So its important to know, this is not a "friends's" opinion. I judge a professional business as I do any other. One year later, I have went from teetering between two sizes to moving down to one size lower. I am more fit, much happier , and have found a purpose even if its just for my own enjoyment. I never imagined I would still be doing this now and what I have accomplished since I've been here. So come down and try it! As a wife, mother and full time career woman I rarely took time for myself. Heather has helped me to recapture my best self. The women in her pole classes are all caring and supportive. And we are all real women at different phases in our lives looking to get in great shape and have lots of fun doing it. With Heather as a teacher I keep pushing my own limits and accomplishing goals I never believed I could. All the instructor did was, show the move and say "Do what you can"! Didn't seem to be interested in actually helping or showing the proper way of doing any of the moves. read more

I gave this place two chances. What a waste of time. The first day, there was dog hair all over the floor and all over the yoga mats. Every single one. That should have been enough. Today, I had a beginners class confirmed for noon. During enrollment I left my telephone number as required. Thirty minutes after leaving my home and arriving at the studio at noon, I read a sign on the door indicating the class was cancelled. Cancelled? Really. LIke she left a sign on her place of business but couldn't call my cell. This business owner Heather needs to figure out if she wants to be in business. read more

I have been attending classes at Shimmy Shimmy for about 6 months now, and absolutely love it! When I first started, I couldn't believe how fun and challenging the classes were! After just one class I was hooked and couldn't wait to take another. I still can tell after every class that I'm getting an amazing workout... so much different than just going to the gym. Heather is a great instructor and really takes the time to explain everything. From the very first class I could tell there was absolutely no pressure or judgment at the studio and it was a very welcoming and laid-back environment. I am currently taking pole fitness, chair/pole choreography and aerial hammock classes- all things I've wanted to try for years. Love this place, Heather is an awesome teacher, it's a judgement free zone, classes are very accessible and you don't need any experience to start. I've improved so much over the last couple of months and feel like pole is a much better upper body workout than any gym class I've ever taken, and I see results much faster! It's also way more fun than going to the gym. I love how easily I can sign up for classes using the MINDBODY app and Heather offers many options for the various classes so it's great for people with complex schedules like myself! I love Shimmy Shimmy and I recommend it to all of my friends! I've taken pole, belly, and burlesque dance classes and loved them all. What a work out!!!! Heather is an amazing instructor and is so patient with all her students! I plan on taking kettlebells with Steve, as well as Ballet and Aerial Yoga in the fall. What an amazing experience!! My friends and I came here for a private bachelorette party. Heather was so incredibly easy to work with from the start. I called with some inquiries and she was sure to follow up with me even after our initial conversation. I currently live on the West Coast, so making calls and deposits with our time difference was tricky - but she was sure to accommodate me. When the big day arrived, our limo broke down and we were going to miss the appointment!! I called and she was happy to reschedule for later that day, really making us feel valued as guests. :-) Her class was a ton of fun, super exhausting, and worth every moment! We got so many fun pictures and videos; all of my friends are now looking into coming to regular classes!
