Husband and I were looking for a lunch spot while driving back from Santa Rosa and passed through the main street of Cotati. There are quite a few food options but it didn't take us long to decide on this sushi establishment based on the reviews. Service was pretty efficient. We both ordered off the lunch special menu and the quality of the food was fresh and done well. The portion sizes were just about right, but could be a tad bit more to justify the price. I particularly liked the spicy tuna roll which had whole tuna pieces instead of the typical pâté consistency which was different. Our bill came to our table when we were only 50% into the meal which we thought was a bit rude. Not sure if it was meant to rush us or the waitress was just being weird. I've been back here many times. The owner and his wife are lovely and don't mind if you walk in 5 minutes before 2 pm of their lunch end time. They will still treat you attentively and with great service and you won't feel like they are rushing you out. My last lunch I got a wonderful sashimi and tonkatsu combo which came with salad, rice, and miso for 12.95. I noted a single item combo was 10.95 so I thought, what the heck, for two dollars more I get a whole extra item - rock on! I also got a small Sopporo for 3.50. So with tip I was just shy about 20 bucks for lunch. I was stuffed, the fish was fresh (4 pieces each of ahi and albacore), though I added soy sauce and wasabi to my salad (more like dipped the salad in my soy sauce dish I used for the sashimi). The salad was lightly tossed in a cream based like mayo dressing which didn't have much flavor but was refreshing once I balanced it out. The tonkatsu was done to perfection though kind of a small portion when compared to other places, though I left full, so I didn't mind that. I liked that the pork cutlet was moist, flavorful, and comprised of both dark and light meat. I've largely gotten over my price issue as I stated in my original review. They really have made up for the slightly higher prices with great service and very fresh authentic Japanese food. Though the sushi itself has been Americanized. That does seem to be a thing in this county, I mean jalapenos are hardly traditional Japanese fare! I recently struck up conversation with the owner's wife who let me know that part of the reason they close in the middle of the day is so that she can pick up her 3 young children from school. It did annoy me that there is a break between lunch and dinner service, even on the weekend. And there is no lunch on Sundays, so I wonder if the family just needs a break or has church or something. Raising three young children is no easy feat. And getting to know the owner's makes me more compassionate to their slightly lacking open hours. Took my mom to Shige Sushi, the acid test for a Japanese Restaurant. She *loved* it! We both ordered the Mixed tempura and we shared the soft shell crab tempura appetizer, I asked for it to be *extra crispy*. I drilled her on the food and she said *multiple* times that she thought it was the best tempura she has ever had. (Disclaimer: she probably doesn't remember every time she's had tempura, she's 92.) She asked for daikon oroshi and they knew what she wanted! In addition, the dashi was not too salty, the misoshiru and tea were deliciously hot and the rice was perfectly cooked. My mother was impressed with the staff (special arigato to Tina and Gina!) were polite, efficient, knowledgeable and all spoke Japanese! In summary, my mom loved the outdoor dining area, the food, decor, service and location. If my mom is happy, everyone is happy. A win/win situation! read more

What a great dinner! Sushi was solid, everything that most places have, great quality, but not the $$$ unusual fish from Japan that you will see at Hana. Front door countless service for Covid. I had been here a few years ago, it's was good. Got take out there tonight 11/21/2020, and I was ASTOUNDED at how good it was. Everything was good, Dragon Roll was the best I've ever had. Also, we accidentally ordered two orders of Maguro and Sake Sashimi instead of Nigiri and we were surprised by the spike in our bill UNTIL we got home and each order had 7-9 pieces of the best sashimi I've had in years. read more

Fresh sashimi and great service. It seems to be run by a husband and wife and there were a couple seatings that seemed to be routine goers. Their servings are good portions and their presentation is great - especially the assorted sashimi. The only problem is that the restaurant is quite small, and when I arrived with a reservation, they did not have a table ready so I had to wait until another party left (thankfully it was less than 10 minutes). Haven't been here for dinner yet, but lunch time wise this is the spot for Sushi. It's a small joint in Cotati but the staff and food are great. They have these lunch combos that go for max 15 bucks or 11 bucks if you choose a small combo. I had the chirashi bowl and I've had a few around different towns. Best place was Yao-Kiku in Bennett valley but have changed and this is up there. Chirashi bowl, plenty of fish with great variety. All that was served in the bowl tasted great, but what makes a good bowl is not just the fish it's the rice. Often neglected. Shige didn't. The combination of the slight sweetness and vinegar combo in the rice brings out a flavor in the fish when eaten together. The price is fair too, 18 bucks. Assorted tempura, they have the usual shrimp, sweet potato, mushroom, but they also add red bell peppers and what a nice addition it is. Reason being is that because whatever they do they bring out a sweetness in the bell peppers, most of the time you don't get that eating bell peppers. My only knock is the dipping sauce is not my fav, I would give that to sushiko. Overall still good. read more

We just had an awesome dinner experience! Not only was the food amazing but the staff was so friendly and went above and beyond to make my 3 yr old girl's experience fun and delicious . They brought her crayons and a special chop stick holder to make it easy and fun for her to pick up her edamame and then she got a strawberry Mochi ball which she loved so much she licked the plate! Our rolls were so good too, we got the cotati roll, dragon roll, and the Godzilla. Toki and Shige are the most people welcoming people I have ever come across!! Every time I dine in they greet me with the warmest hello's and biggest smiles!! I love everything about this restaurant! They have delicious sushi (that you can't match in Sonoma county) and the most wonderful staff! I work in the restaurant industry, so it's a pleasure coming across a restaurant that hits all areas. Great customer service and great food. I'm not much of a "yelper" but I have to give Shige and Toki all the praise after seeing two recent negative reviews. Their story about being "told to leave" seems so far fetched, after dining here on numerous occasions. I've never witnessed anything less than the warmest smile. I came to Shige on a Saturday afternoon. They open at 5:30, and by 5:35 it was already pretty packed. Staff was very nice and polite and was able to accommodate me without a reservation. I got a seat at the sushi bar and took a look at the menu. The menu is fairly extensive. I agree with the name of the restaurant - this is definitely more than just a sushi bar. It is a Japanese restaurant with a good variety of choices available. It is not, however, a teppan grill where you expect a cheesy show with your dinner. I ordered the dinner sized Chirashi bowl and an order of yellowtail nigiri. The yellowtail came out quickly. I was pleased with the size and freshness of the nigiri. The Chirashi bowl took a bit longer, but it was well worth the wait. There was an impressive amount of fish. I was a bit hesitant at first because some of the fish had skin attached, and many times skin attached means fishy. Not at Shige. The fish was fresh and delicious. I enjoyed every single piece. I will definitely be back to Shige. It is worth the drive to Cotati to get good sushi. Too bad I work at the north end of Santa Rosa and can't come to Shige for lunch. I love the food and the atmosphere at Shige. The sushi is delicious with perfect rice to fish ratio. The menu has many innovative and also classic options and many things not at all typically seen outside of SF Japanese restaurants. They also have a nice sake selection and I love that they serve it appropriately with an over pour into the wooden box. I admit I do t recall the sake I enjoyed. It was not in the menu, but had an amazing floral bouquet and incredible smoothness. Tonight I really enjoyed baby Tako which were cooked perfectly and only very lightly floured. The spicy mayo was perfect with them and the Tako were cooked to perfection and super tasty. I think these used to be a special, but they are now in the regular menu which is awesome. Next I had the shiro jalapeño with albacore in a yuzu ponzu sauce that was delicious. Very thinly sliced jalapeño were perfect as was the bed of sliced cucumber. Tonight they had toro as a special, and I can't pass that up. It was, as I expected, gustatory perfection. It had perfect flavor and truly melted in my mouth. I also enjoyed the maguro zuke which they do so well. Finished it off with a spicy hotate handroll for dessert, and this was the perfect ending to a perfect meal. I have noticed promising improvements in SSJK since my last review and this update is to accord them due credit. Shige-san is the sushi chef while his wife works tirelessly as the server. He has recently upgraded his fish and has added more variety while she strived hard to make customers feel like family. In addition, a new chef was hired in the kitchen to beef up the cooked entrees. Their efforts didn't go unrewarded, as business has recently seen an upward swing. I have for a long time been under the impression that SSJK's fish quality was not up to snuff. I realized it was more a situation where the fish was not well presented and showcased in the sushi refrigerator. Better lighting above the refrigerator would definitely help so that the fish colors can become more vibrant. The glass pane on the front side of the refrigerator was sometimes frosted up thus further preventing good visibility. Fish with dull colors are unappetizing and their freshness can be suspect. It wouldn't hurt too to spiff up the showcase by lining some parsley or other decorative materials in much the same way as a retail store would doll up their mannequins. After avoiding sushi for a while in SSJK, I decided to give it another shot. To my surprise, SSJK's fish did in fact taste better than they looked! Shige has recently added uni (Mendocino), kohada (Japan), kanpachi (Hawaii), aji (New Zealand), sayori (Japan), Hokkaido scallops and Bluefin Tuna including toro. More are forthcoming. Uni ($7.50) was a little sweet, had a custardy texture and was particularly fresh that day. Kohada (gizzard shad) ($6.50) has white flesh, silver skin speckled with black dots. The flavor was quite intense with a soft, chewy texture. Kanpachi (amber jack) ($6.50) has bold, clean flavors yet delicate texture. It has one of the highest levels of omega 3 fatty acids. During lunchtime, the best bang for your buck was the sushi/sashimi combo for $12.95. It was like a mini omakase where you get 7 pieces of nigiri and 8 slices of sashimi. It wasn't anything fancy but the price is hard to beat. With the addition of a Japanese chef in the kitchen, their cooked food has also seen significant improvements. The taste is authentically Japanese much more so than most of the other so-called Japanese restaurants in the area. I was surprised to see on their menu several traditional Japanese fares and I am highlighting two of the lesser known entrees. Gindara Saikyo Yaki (Black Cod in Miso) ($18.00): The fish was extremely tasty, tender and flaky with a sweet miso flavor. The skin was slightly crispy, complementing the natural buttery taste of the cod. Tenzaru Soba ($11.50): These are buckwheat noodles served cold with tempura and a good summer dish. Mix the green onions, oroshi (grated daikon) and wasabi into the small bowl of soba dashi (sauce), dip the soba and slurp. The noodles may look like rubber bands but certainly didn't taste like them! The hot tempura had a very delicate light batter and provided a good temperature contrast from the cold noodles. Try it! The interior of the restaurant is bare bones with rickety tables and chairs. However, the basic, no frills dining adds to the small town hole-in-the-wall atmosphere and is charming in its own unpretentious way! read more

Drove up to Cotati from Sonoma because of the great yelp reviews, and I was not disappointed. Sashimi that rivals the better places in San Francisco or Los Angeles for a fraction of the cost. I started with the Natto Maguro (natto, maguro, quail egg), which is a somewhat rare offering outside of Japan. Natto (fermented soybeans) is an acquired taste, but even if you don't care for it, the cred you'll get from the sushi chef is worth the five bucks. Next I had their sashimi dinner: I think it was about 16 pieces for $18? Maybe it was 18 for $18, but either way, such a deal! Of particular note was the saba: Holy Mackerel it was crazy good! Service was impeccable. A family run restaurant that makes the diner feel like one of the family, complete with a heavy pour on the Sake! I wanted to like this place. Another foodie couple made a date with us last night to give it a try, because they had seen favorable reviews. We even made a reservation, just to make sure we could get in. They beat us there by a couple minutes, and were seated. We arrived, and the place wasn't super busy (6:30) and joined our friends. Then the wait started. 22 minutes passed before we were acknowledged or offered beverages/water/to order. Figuring that we may not get another chance at seeing our server, we ordered everything. The chief commentator ordered the Maguro Natto (the fermented soybean appetizer.) The waitress bluntly told him that he shouldn't order it, because he wouldn't like it. Sure, her and her kids love it, but he wasn't going to. Really? He ordered it anyway, and it was probably the best thing we ate. We ordered two additional rolls, and our companions ordered the gyoza and two rolls as well. None of the food came out in any special order. The gyoza looked like the ones you buy at Trader Joe's in the freezer section. The rolls were bland, and the rice wasn't seasoned properly. The fish (spicy tuna) was mashed beyond recognition, which is a crime against the roll because the maguro in the appetizer was quite fresh and lovely. The daikon sprouts in the second roll were a great idea, but few and far between. Nothing was exceptional, or even slightly above average. An order of hamachi was put on the bill, but never received, and when brought up to the waitress, she scratched it off the bill, with annoyance, rather than apologetic. The Bubble drink was Ok, but over priced. The Sake was decent. The wine list is meh. Bottom line, the service would be the primary reason we will not be returning, if the food would have been exceptional, I might put up with the snotty waitress, but nothing here is worth returning for. I didn't expect a joint run by Japanese people in such a middle of nowhere-ish place! The place is small and cozy. What distinguish this Japanese joint from others is that Sushi chefs and also kitchen chefs are Japanese people. You can find lots of regulars enjoying their meals here. Things are far more reasonably prices here than San Francisco or East Bay. There are stuff that are sorta common in Japanese food but not listed on the printed menu. Just ask Shige san. They may serve what you are looking for. Such as Sunomono. Everything I ate was super! I wanted to try a few more dishes but I got too full. They have Sushi items as well as kitchen items. Thank goodness for Shige. We moved to Penngrove and my requirements included a Good Dive Bar (8 Ball), a good butcher and market (Bud's and Olivers) and SUSHI!!! Must have SUSHI!!! and not a place that just serves rolls. I don't go the roll route. I want agedashi tofu, natto, uni ika ai, mirugai, uni on its own, Otokayama, and they have it! We have yet to order off the menu, we just ask for what we want, or just ask for omikase. Authentic, non gaijin sushi and sashimi! I have been to Shige restaurant many times since ive lived local. The restaurant is small and does not have a lot of room so I definitely recommend making reservations for dinner time hour dining. As the saying goes, "its not the size of the restaurant, but what you do with it." The saying is definitely true for this small mom and pop sushi restaurant. For me, even though the restaurant is small its always a wonderful experience. Every time we have gone in there the staff has been wonderful, courteous, helpful and very friendly. They always want to ensure that everything is perfect for their diners. The menu rejection is wonderful, and it seems there is something for everyone. One of my favorite rolls they make is the Cotati roll. The Cotati roll is shrimp tempura and crab mix, asparagus topped with tuna and spicy mayo and chilli pepper. It is absolutely to die for and worth it. Its a wonderful place to go when you want good quality sushi. My family and I will definitely be returning again in the future. read more

Oh. My. God. Best Japanese in SoCo, if not ever! The food here is such wonderful quality and I love the cozy, non-pretentious atmosphere. The service was also wonderful. Just be prepared to wait a bit because this place can get super crowded. It's well worth the wait though! I started with the jalapeño, sunomono, maguro appetizer and knew I was in for an amazing meal after the first bite of this dish. It was the perfect blend of flavors and was super fresh. And at only $9.00 it was a bargain for how much fresh fish they gave you. Next I had the takoyaki, which I've been wanting to try ever since I was a fat, little Pokémon-crazed child and witnessed Ash Ketchum eating them on tv. They were really flavorful, with a nice presentation. The flavor was mild, creamy, slightly smokey, and nicely complemented the fresh octopus. For my main dish I took the waiters suggestion on trying the Cotati roll. It was super delicious and complex. I loved the asparagus in the roll which surprisingly made the roll. Lastly my sister and I split the natto roll, which is something that most westerners probably wouldn't like.. including me. It was worth the try and I'm sure it was good quality but I just simply don't like natto I've concluded. I tried the ramen on 1/31/14. The broth was rich and flavorful. The soft boiled egg was cooked to perfection and very tasty. The noodles were good quality and not overcooked. Most importantly the ramen temperature is served very hot which is the way is the proper way ramen should be served. There is a ramen rage in San Francisco and San Jose and maybe Shige's will be the first to start one in this area. The food is average. Yelp states... two stars = meh, i've experienced better. verbatim, that is how i feel. i've experienced better Japanese food in strip malls. The Udon was presented and they didn't provide a spoon. it took well over 10 minutes to get one.... i had to walk up to the cashier and ask for one bc the waitress was asked several times but never came back with one. getting seated... sub par. the tables were available. the weren't being bused quickly or efficiently. it's a restaurant. all these things should happen like a swiss watch. it took a long time to get seated bc the inefficiencies of the restaurant. the food didn't take a long time to come out. but getting a spoon, getting a set of chopsticks. etc. took forever. the owner/manager MUST hire 2 more bodies to be managing the place. you need more servers. the customer service was the worst i have experienced in a Japanese restaurant in over 5 years, maybe even 10 years. Scene: family reunion with our Sonoma State University student. Dilemma: not knowing the neighborhood, where to eat? We did have sushi in mind as we walked the cute one-block downtown of Cotati. Added complexity: we had brought our doggie to this visit (what college student doesn't want to see her family dog?) Shige Sushi to the rescue! They allowed us to sit outside with our family pet; the nigiri sushi, tempura and sashimi were impeccably fresh. Extra points for the edamame with crispy fried (not burnt) garlic. First: I've been here many times. Second: The waitress who was rude no longer works here. The review: The sushi, sashimi and rolls are great every time I eat here. Shige is also really good at coming up with new rolls when I ask him to make me something. My boyfriend is a vegetarian and always enjoys his food (Shige makes him different rolls every time we come). I LOVE the poke salad! They just added ramen to the menu. I had it a few days ago and it was REALLY good - the chef is from the Ramen Shop (see my review of that place), and cooks the broth for over eight hours. It is organic, MSG-free, and made from local chicken : ) The service has always been prompt and courteous (with the exception of the girl who no longer works there). The place is small, but there's now an outdoor seating area so the seating has almost doubled. This is a friendly place, so go in with a friendly attitude and have a great time - maybe you can even get a Shige to do a sake bomb! read more

The sashimi platter was amazing. Blue fin belly melted in your mouth. The shisho roll is both unique and delicious. Nice casual spot with friendly service. read more
