The man who creates the tacos at El Loco Panda does so with love, and you can tell - Love for his culture, Love for the community. When I was waiting for my order to be wrapped up, a disciple sitting in the waiting area piped up and said, "The food here is good." If I know Detroiters (cuz I am one), we're not quick to compliment. Like Mexico, there is great diversity in what we consider to be a "taco." You have ground beef, Al pastor, chicken, sea bass, mahi mahi, vegan. You can top it with everything from queso Fresca to a refined julienne radish slaw. IDGAF! As long as it's fresh and well done, I'm here for it! My favorite here? The birria by far. The consommé served on the side is quite delicious and unexpectedly elegant, like a rose from the concrete. I feel like Loco Panda and its' chef reflects the essence of the east side of Detroit. Lemme 'splain: The tacos are hearty. They are heavy with meat and (gasp) yellow cheese sauce. So hearty, he had to double up on tortillas! He further bucks tradition and goes against the grain stylistically (soooo Detroit) and tops with red onion instead of white! Where they do that at?! Whereas you usually need to eat 3-4 street tacos from the festival trucks or Southwest to get full, you'll be full off of 1-2 of these, trust. Think like the good "real" Mac n cheese that we eat versus Kraft . Think "dressing" versus "stuffing." I think what I am trying to say is, ..... these tacos have soul. I don't even think about the fact that it's housed adjacent to a gas station. That doesn't matter to me. So long as the kitchen is clean (and it is), I'm good wit it. As a matter of fact, I take away that the food mattered more to this owner than the zip code it was cooked in (shout to subpar, high rent Bakersfield on Woodward). This is real food cooked from the heart. And quite frankly, it doesn't get any better than that.

It's maybe 3 stars because their prices are generally ~$4+ a taco, but it's a local place I love supporting, they make it worth $4 the best they can, it's one of the *only* good restaurants in West Village, and their food's genuinely so good. Check it out.

The woman behind the register was new and seemed alone, and I had a lot of patience for her. I think her boss came up to man the register and take orders so she could get the kitchen moving, all totally fine. Unfortunately I witnessed a man walking in to pick up an order he had placed 30 minutes prior, the woman realized his order had not been started and he cancelled his order. I noticed the women that ordered right before me getting their food, so I walked up thinking my order would be next. I noticed a receipt with my name on it sitting on the printer, but thought it was a duplicate. Nope. They never started my order, and I was told it would be 15-20 minutes because there were orders ahead of me. I cancelled my order, I had to get back to work. They should be so embarrassed that this happened twice in the span of 30 minutes, with very few people in line to order. I want to support local spots, but you have to be good and be able to run a business. I wish I had just driven to one of my favorite places in Southwest.

This is fast-casual Mexican food, and once I realized that, it actually reminded me of a place I absolutely loved in college. Had I understood the concept before walking in, my expectations would have been completely different. The nachos were delicious, and the margarita definitely did its job! If you're looking for good, casual food and a fun, quick stop, you'll probably be very happy here. But if you're looking for ambience, sit-down table service, or a handcrafted margarita rather than one that comes pre-made from a machine, this isn't that kind of place. Go in knowing what it is, and enjoy it for what it does well!

The menu has tons of options, the portions are generous, and the prices feel very reasonable. The guac was fantastic. I ordered the Cali Burrito without meat or cheese, and it was absolutely delicious and still full of flavor. One detail I really appreciated was that the chips came out hot and the dips were served in to-go containers, which made it easy to pack up leftovers and take them home. Their red salsa had a delicious smoky flavor and is definitely worth ordering. My husband tried the elote corn and really enjoyed it. It had a bit of heat, but the portion size and flavor made it well worth it. Overall, we had a great experience and already know we'll be back. We may have found a new favorite spot!
