The people of Motherwell probably don't appreciate their luck at being on the West Coast Mainline as there are hardly ever any people who get on here to go south to England.

Allow a wee bit extra for making it to your platform if you have to cross the big bridge, though!

Two heading into Glasgow, terminating at Milngavie and Dalmuir and two heading to Hamilton and Motherwell, terminating at Motherwell, Larkhall and Lanark. The staff here are always pleasant, I had a lovely wee chat today. The main building is small and where the ticket office is, which also contains some seating. It's located on platform 1, heading into Glasgow. If you alight, as they say in the train jargon, on platform 2 look out for the two metal African men carrying a boat, I think. Not real metal men then that would be Cybermen. Eep! Anyway, follow the path beside them and head down Station Road and this takes you to the David Livingstone Centre. There's plenty of activity happening down there as they are celebrating his 200th birthday this year. Oooft he's got old. Hehe!

It's barely even a station, and more of an lonely,…read moredesolate area with two platforms, a bridge and one small shelter for those "rare" Scottish days of bad weather. This is my local station though, and needs must. I like that trains seem to arrive on time and if the driver sees you running for the train, they'll (mostly) wait for you. I've had some great times standing at this platform, most notably in the snow in negative temperatures and then tramping back home again as the train was a no-show. There's now an extra car park in addition to the one at the station, it's over the road and has a stupidly located exit so you have to go back on yourself to get out and over to the station. Nothing like a mad dash to run for the train first thing in the morning. II'd love it if they upgraded Patterton to make it more like its glamorous neighbour, Whitecraigs. Now this is a fancy station - they even have flower planter boxes and an indoor waiting area. Alas, I don't think that's going to happen any time soon.

My wonderful local train station!…read more Hamilton Central is one of Hamilton's 2 train stations, and as the name suggests, the central one. I've never been overly fond of this train station, because it's outside therefore it's always freezing and wet, and on days when the weather is terrible, the 2 small indoor areas are always absolutely mobbed. It's relatively big, with the brand new bus station right next door, and is usually quite clean, so isn't an eyesore, it's just not the friendliest feeling place in the world!

It's quite a nice station. There's a large car park, as well as bike racks and it's staffed but there are ticket machines (although no barriers) available as well. The station has good accessibility and a small coffee shop on platform 1. There are flowers in baskets here and plenty of seating.

It's a nice little station, and it's handy. There's two basic services from here, to Glasgow and to Edinburgh every two hours. Both of these take approximately 45mins, which isn't bad at all. The last train from Edinburgh to Carstairs arrives at midnight - very good for the odd night out. There's also the sleeper service direct to London, which I've also used. Walk from my door, hop on a train, go to sleep and wake up in London! How good is that??? The station itself is very busy for through traffic, with pretty much every Glasgow and further north service heading south at speed through the station. Ideal if you have an anorak and thermos flask,,, The ticket office is manned in the morning, until about 2pm - after that, tickets are available on the trains. The village itself doesn't have much in the way of attractions if you're planning to visit - there's a primary school, a Londis (with a post office!), a hairdresser, a pub and a couple of haulage firms. Oh, and the State Mental Hospital, but I don't use that. Honest. *twitch* You can get a bus from the station into Lanark, which opens up New Lanark and the likes, so you could make a day of it that way. It's my station. I like it. So there.

At Airdrie train station there is not a lot to do or see and as for facilities there is a snack bar on site with limited selection and opening hours. There is an open waiting room that will keep you dry as long as you don't mind the wind. Outside the station within a few minutes walk there is a taxi rank but at most times there are no taxis, for shops in the area are now limited to betting shops, charity and pound lands. In the summer it may be nice but when winter comes it can be depressing.

Why Airdrie council don't take advantage of this in trying to get people from both Airdrie and Edinburgh to come here. The station looks great. Shame, they left the old cabin office. What they were thinking, I'll never know. Get a new building that doesn't stand out like a sorethumb and I'll give you 5 stars.

It has 2 platforms, one of which is NEVER USED unless there's some kind of kerfuffle further up the…read moreline and parking space is needed. There's one train to Glasgow every half hour during peak times in the week, and one per hour later at night and on Sundays. The ticket office is functional, at best - no facilities of any kind. No ticket machine to use if the office is closed, so get your ticket from the man/woman/unicorn on the train. If the ticket office is closed, be warned - there is NO shelter from the elements. There's an unused building on the unused platform that could easily be repurposed as a shop, a cafe, even just a waiting room with a roof! It has always been that way as far as I can remember, and seems a shame. It's a railway station, and it does what it's supposed to do. Just don't ask for bells whistles, or even cover from the rain and snow.
