Charing Cross is a stop on the Glasgow low level system, with trains running between Balloch, Helensburgh and Milngavie to the west, and Springburn, Airdrie and Drumgelloch to the east.
It is a busy station during the rush hours, being very close to some of the major offices in the St Vincent Street/Argyle Street area. It is also very close to the Mitchell Library and the end of the busy Sauchiehall Street.
There is a ticket office at Charing Cross, though there is no escalator to the platforms which are situated below down a huge, twisting flight of stairs; a bit of a bummer for the disabled, although there is an elevator. Services through this station run very frequently, roughly every ten minutes, and also run quite late -the last trains in both directions are around midnight, which has proved quite handy for me getting home on many an occasion after a few drinks up Sauchiehall Street.
My only real problem about Charing Cross is access. It is not ideal for a station to be hidden away in some nook or crannie away from the main road like this - many a time it has taken me ages to find it because I could not remember which dark little side street it lies on, not helped by the fact it is not signposted. To get here from the Mitchell Library for example is difficult because although the station is just across the road, once you've crossed you either have to take a big detour round a couple of other streets or walk over the cobbled bit at the side of the road past the strip club Seventh Heaven (there is no pavement here). read more
