Is it a hammer you are looking for? Choose between ball peen, claw, rubber or sledge. Something that cuts? Peruse the hatchet and axe and lopper and pocket knife selections. Nab a nut, buy a bolt, put your DIY hat on and become one with your inner HGTV star who's been fighting to get out. No Drago Hardware doesn't offer the variety of Home Depot, nor the volume pricing of Lowe's, but it kills the big boxes in customer service and charm. On my recent visit, I caught the owner wiring a light kit onto a ceiling fan for a customer...at no charge. How is that for service? When you shop at Drago Hardware you are supporting the dwindling small business community in Port Arthur and the Drago family which has operated this enterprise since 1931.

I needed a tool for my water meter so I could have functioning utilities. Mind you that I also had to be to work so I was moving expeditiously.This morning I went to Drago Hardware Co.1900 9th Ave. Port Arthur TX. As I go to checkout an employee at the register was casually talking with another civilian that wasnt making a purchase. I ask if I can be checked out. He looks at me with disgust. Raises his voice As if I was across the store to tell me how rude I am. Only to be followed by derogatory and racists remarks; such as "your people won't ever get ahead" and "you'll just end up in prison" all because I asked to be checked out. His actions can not be justified. I was bothered by my experience. I thought for certain that type of behavior wasn't tolerated at the store , but unfortunately that was just the tip of the iceberg. I call the location to speak with a manager to inform of the situation. I noticed she seemed uneased with attitude galore. I can only assume because of my distinguished African American accent. I asked how she was doing only to be insulted again. She replied with "fine up until this phone call" followed by a dial tone. I will be having a peaceful protest until this is brought to light .

You can get better prices at the big stores, but in the era when Blackrock and Vanguard own and therefore control shares of most big companies, it's likely that your money will be going to policies and causes that you are against. This is why I'm a Sutherland's regular. Ace Hardware is very convenient, but also expensive. Home Depot has low prices, but has gone liberal. Lowe's is far better. But Sutherland's is a local business. It has a wide selection of lumber, tools, landscaping equipment, plants and seeds. The employees try to be helpful, and succeed. Some of the materials are fitting specifically for Southeast Texas, not the one-item-fits-everywhere approach by Lowe's and Home Depot. And the prices are slightly lower than the Ace Hardware across College Street. The big boys are typically the first place we think of if we need something. If you need things for the house, I encourage you to try Sutherland's. You should love the experience. If you're a single woman looking for a husband, stick to Home Depot :-D

When the young lady worker walked in I tried asking her my question, she clearly saw me trying to talk to her but brushed me off/ignored me and instead went out to meet a food delivery driver for her milkshakes or sodas. She then went and helped two other people before allowing me to ask my question, even then I was met with a dismissive attitude. Young lady told me "we don't have those this time of year" as if I should have known that. I have never had plants before. Didn't even recommend anything similar to what I was looking for so I left and I won't be coming back.
