This is the alternative to WINCO in Roseburg. It seems like all the people that don't have a Costco card go here! It gets very crowded right after 3pm! Sherms is a sweet place to shop, they're pretty low tech, have good selections of food, great prices...definitely fits in backwoods Oregon. I like the low key atmosphere more then going to a snazzy store. read more

It's okay. The prices are consistently lower than most places in town. The parking is what drives me crazy. It's always busy and you can't really do a quick "hit & run" stop, but if you're into low prices they are a place to go. I typically hit other markets for produce and look for the sales they have to off-set having to go here all the time. read more

I can't stand Sherms! I refuse to go there, when we need something from there I make my husband go. Just trying to find parking almost sends you into a panic attack. The store is dirty and way to crowded. Do not buy produce there! Its bad within a day or 2. Yes the prices are good but its not worth it to me. read more

Yes, this place is crazy huge, some people are weird-looking, and you can't really make a "super quick" stop. But the prices are awesome. We eat all whole foods (all meals made from scratch), and mostly organic, so we buy mostly produce, a little meat, whole grains, dairy, etc. Produce prices are half of what they are at other stores (and all from OR, WA, or CA, mostly OR), and they have a pretty large organic selection. I was absolutely blown away by the low produce prices the first few times I came here - they have revolutionized my grocery budget. They have a huge natural foods selection (like half the size of an entire Whole Foods store, crammed into three giant aisles inside Sherm's), so I can get all my organic stuff/supplements/coconut oil/coconut milk/natural soap, etc. without going to another store. They even have a large bulk section with whole grains/rice flour/coconut flour/natural sugars/basically everything Whole Foods has, except for the snooty sales people. They have some organic meat! And not just bnls, sknls, $9.00/lb chicken breasts. They carry organic whole chickens, chicken thighs, etc., which are waaay cheaper. I started buying organic whole chickens here when Costco stopped carrying them. They also carry the Applegate Farms line, one of the best organic sausage/lunchmeat etc. lines I've seen. I haven't seen organic beef yet, but if you live in Roseburg, it's just as easy to buy grassfed in bulk from a farmer and save even more, anyway. By shopping here, I'm able to feed my family mostly organic, whole foods for less than I thought possible. If you plan your weekly meals anyway, or if you do one "big" shopping trip a week (or every other week for us), it is SO worth it to come here to save, and then go somewhere more convenient for little stops throughout the week. And Krista T., who commented above, may prefer to ship her meat in from an unknown mystery CAFO supplier across the country, but I am happy to know that 4H kids are able to sell their well-cared-for animals to a local market. If you want a huge national conglomerate shopping experience, go to a huge conglomerate market. If you want amazing prices on mostly local food, with tons more healthy and organic options than anywhere else, go to Sherms. We go early in the day, when it's less crowded and you only have to compete for parking space with retirees. :) read more

Sherm's has added a good organic produce section, and its general produce has improved. Has an excellent area for buying in bins, and for nutritional products. Some of the nutritional products are a bit pricy, but overall I find good stuff, esp. in the bins and organic produce and regular produce. Sherm's is a great grocery store don't get me wrong, but the parking situation is always a pain. Other than that, a 4 star :')

Sherm's Thunderbird Market provides a great place to shop and good deals on everything from laundry detergent and paper towels to ice cream, fresh produce, and bulk oatmeal. Located in Roseburg, Oregon, it is quite popular with many Douglas County residents, which can be seen by the number of vehicles in the parking lot each time I go there to shop. It is a family-owned supermarket, supportive of the community, and conscientious of its customers. While there are a few things I'd change about it, overall it is an excellent place to shop for groceries for the family. The store is located in a good place near the central part of Roseburg and is easily accessible from the freeway. Unlike Costco, which Roseburg residents have to drive a few miles out of town to reach, it is more conveniently located for Roseburg shoppers. If you're looking for good deals on food items, this is the place to shop. Their produce section has a wide variety of fresh vegetables and fruits for some of the lowest prices anywhere in town. Compared to Fred Meyer, another popular store for my family's shopping needs, Sherm's usually beats them in price, not just on the fresh foods, but store-wide. This is the main reason we often choose Sherm's over other local grocery stores. Sherm's is also willing to tailor to specific customer requests. After talking with a friendly employee stocking apples one afternoon, my dad came home with a highly discounted 25-pound box of "reject" apples that were perfectly edible, except for a few bruises or scars. This is just one example of the fine people that work at Sherm's. The employees are friendly and helpful. The checkers are especially conversational as you wait in line and always engage with their customers. And the store supports local businesses by selling local products; an example is Umpqua Dairy's ice cream and dairy products. They even sell hand-served cones or dishes of Umpqua Dairy ice cream at the front of the store! 4-H and FFA students are well supported by Sherm's, who buys numerous market animals at the local auctions. Then they market the meat in the store, not to be offensive to those who view this as inappropriate, but to encourage the next generation as they learn how to raise livestock for human consumption. I was a 4-H'er for 9 years and Sherm's owners never failed to participate in every auction held in Douglas County during that time. To me, having a store this big supporting young people and local activities is a huge blessing. I personally love stores with a large bulk section because I can buy cereals, flour, dried fruits, nuts, candy, and more for much lower prices than pre-packaged items. Sherm's is my favorite place to get bulk foods for this reason. And if I'm worn out after grocery shopping and need a healthy snack for the ride home, there are several varieties of bulk trail mixes to choose from. One thing I don't care for as much is the cold and drafty atmosphere, with dimmed lighting. But I don't expect a supermarket like this to be quite as nice as Safeway or Fred Meyer. Since Sherm's does not have a clothing section, household furniture, or appliances, and because it is much larger than these other stores, the drafty feeling is somewhat expected. Another potential drawback to Sherm's is parking close to the store is hard to find during most days. The parking lot is quite large and there is always a place somewhere... you just may have to walk a little ways. For me, this isn't a huge issue, because the prices and outstanding products offered are worth a little walk. And who doesn't need a little more exercise? Since shopping carts are adequately provided, as well as several cart corrals in the parking lot, there isn't much inconvenience getting food to your car or returning carts. Maybe the biggest downside of this store is bagging your own groceries. There are plastic and paper bags provided in various sizes, but you have to bag items yourself. I have seen checkers helping elderly people, but for the average, able-bodied person, it's all up to you. But I can see how older people could have some difficulty. There are two conveyers at each check stand, so customers can be paying and bagging simultaneously, but if you get behind a person with two carts worth of items and a slow older gentleman with a decent amount of groceries, it can cause delays. This doesn't bother me much, unless I'm in a hurry, but it is something to consider. Overall, I give Sherm's 4 stars out of 5 for their job in serving Douglas County as a great place for grocery shopping. See you there! read more

Have shopped here for a few years and like the selection and prices. Low prices shouldn't have to mean sub quality produce and meats, though. I've found snails in cauliflower and other creepy-crawlies in some of the [fresh-but-not-so-clean] veggies. Speaking of creepy-It's a sad day when the customer has to steer clear of pompous, rude employees. Stephanie, Judy and Marin take the prize here. Recently, I was waiting behind a woman for a coffee at their coffee/ice cream counter and it wasn't long before I realized Sherms employee, Marin, was too busy chit-chatting w/her about personal stuff while I waited in full view and she'd already noticed me next in line. She just kept on talking on, acting like working a coffee counter gave her CEO status. Spoke to Jake, Asst. Mgr., about in-your-face rudeness and waste of customers time, but I've complained about bad staff several times so...who knows. They probably "came up the chain" too and feel sorry for them. Walmart and Freddy's is a must on most items, so this market is just a fill-in. Somebody should mention to these and other such employees that Burger King's hiring. read more

This place could be 5 stars if you never shop before the 5th of the month. It also helps to go in the evening, as you will have to dodge fewer of people, especially shoppers in electric scooters. The parking lot is also hairy. I suggest you park at K-mart and walk. You will have a nice walk back to the car to eat your ice cream cone. The best thing about this store, is they carry almost everything. The bad thing is waiting in line and dodging all of the customers. Also the cashiers are slow. But if you want some deals, Sherms is the place to go. They have all of your tree-hugging favorites, a great bulk food section, good international food section and they even have an institutional sized product section in the back left corner of the store...not to mention it. And on your way out, have some cash in your pocket because you can get a waffle cone loaded with Umpqua Dairy ice cream for only $1.50. Wow!! read more

Just be careful in the produce section. Although the it seems as if there is a lot to choose from, typically their produce ....watermelons, cantaloupes, peaches, pears, ect are either under ripe or spoiled. Especially the watermelons. Save your receipts, take them back, better yet, open them in the parking lot and save yourself a huge disappointment when you get home and your fruit is awful. Best bet it to go to Brocises farms, kruse produce, the local farmers market on Saturday to get your produce than here. Also, make sure you wash your produce ALWAYS. Sometimes you can taste the pesticides in their grapes. read more

Sherm's is my favorite place to shop ANYWHERE. I love it so much that it is a required 'tourist' stop when friends come to town. I'm constantly posting photos of the great deals I snag particularly in the meat and fish department (my latest was $1.37/lb for boneless centercut thin cut pork chops...). In my opinion the produce is as good and usually better than any of the other grocery stores, Walmart, or Costco. Of course Kruse Markets and Brosi's will generally be better in the season, but Sherm's consistently has excellent wide selections and quality. AND they get local Oregon wild gathered mushrooms in season. That's downright amazing! They have 5 (or is it 6?) aisles of organic and bulk (binned) foods like flours, sugars, grains, nuts, etc. And my goodness, the meat sales. Incredible prices. They are also a sponsor and buyer for the 4-H shows and if you want top quality meats, that is the way to go. I put in special orders for the lamb in particular every year. The bakery is extensive, and there is an industrial foods corner in the back if you need volume packaging. I had a Costco membership and if we are talking about JUST the foods, Sherm's is the winner every time. read more

I read all the posts that were listed and would like to add a few comments. First, this is my go-to store for produce. Someone told me that the produce here was dirty. Well, it DOES GROW IN THE DIRT. In my own garden, I wash the vegetables before eating them and always clean the veggies and fruit (including washing bananas) prior to putting them away. Doesn't everyone wash veggies and fruit before putting it out for consumption? Secondly: We have had employees special order items for us when we wanted to order in bulk. The person who did this for us was so helpful and we had our order filled in no time at all. Thirdly: All of us have a bad day or two, and we don't know what has transpired in another person's life...still they have had to come to work and do their job. When someone seems tense or short, it would seem that we could have enough compassion for another human being to adjust our own attitudes before passing judgement on another.
