Visited twice this weekend and both times they were extremely friendly and it was overall easy to get in and out. The yard is clean and has clear signs of what each product is, so it makes it really simple to tell the cashier exactly what you want. I arrived, paid and loaded all within about 5 minutes, which was great. The loader was quick and accurate, so I didn't lose a bunch leaving. Incredibly impressed with Shep's Yard. I've never done much landscaping work before, and decided to put in a patio with some extra down time on my hands. I watched all the YouTube videos I could find, but was very intimidated by the process. Shep's Yard was the first company I called based on location and online review. Lexie was incredibly helpful and communicative throughout the process. She accommodated a specific drop off request, answered basic material questions, and even provided a custom pattern for the stones we selected for the patio. The delivery people were just as excellent. Aaron dropped off the crushed gravel on a Saturday, was friendly and offered some tips for the base and tamping process (no plate compactor for us!). On the Monday, Andrew came with our sand and flagstone. Again, he stayed to answer some of my beginner questions, was very friendly and encouraging. Same day of the stone delivery, we finished the patio (picture attached), and my wife is now incredibly relieved that my burst of motivation didn't conclude with just a big hole in our backyard! Bought 6 cubic yards of sheps soil mixed with top soil (as recommended by the staff). The soil ruined all of my plant starts including 20 tomatoes and peppers and countless other flowers and vegetables. Any seeds that I planted if they did sprout they got yellow and died within a week. I was hoping to have a lower maintenance garden with raised beds now I have a science project of soil tests through the agriculture department at psu to figure out where the imbalance is. The staff and drivers were very friendly and the drivers delivered right where I had marked. This isn't a review to say font get any materials from sheps however something seems majorly off will their soil and I wouldn't recommend them for that product. read more

I bought their "super soil" for my garden. It's not super at all. Lots of clay in the soil but they tout it as being great for gardens. They even sold me a bag of peat moss because they said it would hold water better. If it's really super soil why are they selling a soil amendment like Peat moss to their customers. I called them and told them about my dissatisfaction and they did nothing to try to make things right. Steer clear of this business read more

Again, I must update based upon the excellent customer service Shep's offers. You'll see in my June review, I mention buying three Oak Leaf Hydrangeas at Shep's. We planted them, watered them, and the seemed to all do well all summer long. Well, by late August, one of the three was starting to look very sad. I sent a quick email to Shep's with a picture. And this is what happened next: 1) they responded pretty quickly; offered a possible reason for the sickly hydrangea--a fungus 2) indicated that they would like to see it in person, could I send them my address and they'd stop over one day 3) took a quick look one day, emailed me and indicated that it was likely a fungus 4) dropped off a NEW, replacement oak leaf hydrangea within a few days 5) new hydrangea is already looking good! While resetting our 50 yr old pool patio we saw a lot of Shep's Yard staff delivering gravel, fines and some replacement flagstone. 4 deliveries of stone and one of flagging and everyone was SO nice. Andrew always called ahead to let us know he was on the way. All the staff could back the dump truck in just right, not a pebble in the grass- all on the drive. It was pretty amazing. They were willing to bring partial loads because we didn't have room for 10 tons at once. The quality of the flagstone is exceptional!! Handsome blue color and the sizes are spot on. A 24 x 36 will be 23 1/2" x 35 1/2". Thickness within a tight range too. They will also cut to size if needed. Prompt delivery, nice staff, great quality! What more can you ask for? read more

Called and left message on answering machine. They called me back within an hour and I had a cord of firewood delivered as promised. 18 inch cut mixed hardwoods dropped where I wanted it. I will be ordering 3 cu. yards of mulch in the spring. Nice people. I was ordering from another company for 12 years... Shep's is "much more better". read more

Recently, I had to buy a little over a yard of stone but could only transport a small amount at a given time. They wouldn't sell it to me at the bulk rate even though I indicated I would buy this same quantity that same day. I figured that a yard was a yard since it all came from the same bin, why should it matter if it is taken over several trips or all at once. No effort was made to help me get the best price so customer service is a bit lacking. Some local businesses really go above and beyond to offer fair pricing, but this time Shep's dropped the ball. I've always had a good experience here but their reason for charging me more was that I wasn't buying in bulk.... so I guess a yard isn't a yard after all. I'll revisit Shep's in the future, but probably only as a last resort. UPDATE: Thanks so much for your reply, Daelyn! I did bring my concerns up at the time of purchase and your explanation is consistent with what I was told previously. I did a little research and found that there are 0.02476 cubic yards in each 5 gallon bucket. During my first transaction I indicated that I wanted to purchase 50 of these which would be 1.238 yards. So it's not like I didn't intend to buy a bulk quantity from the start. I had explained that there were several obstacles to having it delivered and I do not own the equipment needed to haul the entire amount at once. I was nicely told that it couldn't be done and I would have to buy smaller amounts and be charged the higher rate. I would understand if the stone was prepackaged or if extra work was needed to fill orders like this, but everything comes from the same bin and the customer does all the work. So at the end of the day, 1.238 yards will be sold from that bin and the only extra work on your part was lending me the buckets. I've had many places be more accommodating when it comes to situations like this. They would listen to my concerns and we would work out something that makes sense given the situation. I was just surprised that a small local business would stand so firmly behind their pricing policy. So from my perspective your top priority wasn't exactly customer service. I do appreciate the follow-up though, but I guess now you can't say that no one has ever complained. read more

While passing this business, I noticed the many magnificent boulders lining the driveway and a sign advertising 'boulder sale.' Stopped by on Saturday to window shop in the sun and have some fun looking at boulders, with no expectation of purchase. The lot is filled with bulk stone of every color, mulches, soils, bluestone pavers in various sizes, natural stones, plants and ceramic pottery. Everything natural, no PVC. The proprietor was most kind and patient, and we were surprised that the boulders were most affordable, we pick out six, to be delivered. We also took some flagstone that was carefully loaded in our car. We stopped back two days later and picked out two additional larger (2+ ton) stones. On Thursday Chris showed up with a Bobcat forklift and was able to maneuver the boulders to exactly where we wanted them, I got the impression that he was willing to stay as long as was needed and wasn't doing a drop and run job. So often in this economy if are not spending top dollar you are given the 'bum's rush,' we felt like we were treated very well by everyone in this business. We will return, if only for flagstone, mulch or possibly more boulders. This is a hard business with large investment in inventory and equipment and long hours, however this family seems committed to good customer service. read more
