I've spent hundreds of dollars at this garden center over the past 20 years. I've never complained of a perennial or shrub did not do well/survive. I came here today to request a replacement for a guaranteed shrub. It was my understanding that a replacement or refund would be given in this circumstance. But no. I was told the problem iis a result of all the rain. I was given Neem oil and told to treat it. The shrub is supposedly guaranteed for a year, so if it doesn't come back to life before one year, too bad for me. I have lots of reward bucks that I had planned to use today to purchase perennials and annuals, but after this experience I won't be buying anything more at Colonial. Ever. While I appreciate the response from Casey, as I've thought more about this, the main thing that disturbs me is that Eric could have done the appropriate,, pro-customer service response to a 20-year-long customer, he chose to dismiss my concern and argue his point that it was just a treatable disease, while I was very expressing distress having a failing shrub in my otherwise well-tended garden. It would have cost him nearly nothing to make me happy, and generously offer to replace the $60 (!) shrub, instead he opted to be obstinate and provide me with a bunch of worthless platitudes about the analogy between teenagers and plants. So, now, instead of spending my $700 yearly garden budget at Colonial, I'll spend it at another garden center. (And, if today's interaction was any indication, Eric will probably say "good riddance.") read more

I have found some amazing plants here over the years. This last visit I was helped by John. He was infinitely helpful and patient as we planned out my two level flower bed. I love what we put together. I truly appreciate his level of customer service. They have more perennials than anyone. They also have a beautiful gift shop. I will be back! Avoid the Florist. While she makes gorgeous arrangements, her communication skills are subpar. Her default practice of not listening to the customer, combined with making assumptions that she understands what is being asked for, without providing clear clarification confirmations.... led to my major meltdown in her shop during an already stress filled week, as well as the loss of all my future business. My brother, the widower, asked me to obtain his wife's favorite lavender flowers in a vase to be placed beside her framed photo at her memorial service. When I told the Florist "lavender flowers" what I saw in my head was field grown flowers. Her confirmation statement was "lavender.... and whites"? To which I had said "oh, okay". She never said "roses, mums, or would you like a different lavender colored flower"? That would have clued me in, in advance. Instead she ASSUMED I meant color not type. Had she had clarified that fact during the ordering process I would not have been shocked to see lavender ROSES waiting for me and not the lavender flowers I had asked for and had paid for. Yes I NOW know lavender flowers are out of season.... Nope she NEVER made that clear during my in person ordering experience. When I was obviously upset that she had not put lavender flowers into a vase as I had ordered she angrily blamed me for the mistake and threatened not to give me my paid in full arrangement if I wasn't happy. I told her I would take the arrangement with me since I was now STUCK with her lovely ... but wrong ... arrangement because there was NO time to get a replacement. Later, as the owner defended her, she fled the room without apologizing for her defensive attitude. Yes, after he shared condolences he carefully explained that the word lavender means color not flower to florists... something she never told me. Yup, the next time I want to buy lavender flowers I'll visit a Home Depot Garden Center and will look to buy a plant. And the next time I need fresh flowers in a vase I will head to Wegmans. read more

I have had unfortuante experiences with this place. John and Eric are knowledgeable and the selection is more varied than some nurseries, but both can be rude and short tempered. I've spent well over $4000 and they offer free "design" which amounts to hastily scribbled notes not a true landscape design. Unfortunately, that led to the staff missing 4 or 5 items, which, with installation cost over $600. Eric seemed annoyed at his own mistake even though I showed him his plan. They provide a guarantee if they install (labor is 2X the price of plants) but were quite rude when one large bush died just a few months after planting. Finally, they just planted the wrong tree which I paid almost $600 for and instead of treating me like a valued customer or at least with respect, Eric had what can only be called a tantrum over his mistake and was quite insulting. read more

I've been coming to Colonial Gardens for a few years now with the kids for their Halloween festivities. Colonial Gardens is a great spot for young children to enjoy mazes and the daytime tractor ride during Halloween season. It has become an annual tradition that we all look forward to. This year we did the Christmas light show and it was excellent. It was the perfect size for kids and a lot to see. I wish we did it last year instead of Longwood Gardens. Colonial Gardens light show is very kid friendly but also beautiful for adults and not too much walking. (Last year at Longwood it was just too much walking for a 3 year old.) My daughter loved meeting Elsa and Anna at Colonial. There was also a nice train set up inside and hot cocoa and candy canes outside at the light show. I can see the holiday light show becoming an annual tradition for our family. We also got a beautiful full Christmas tree at a reasonable price. Easy online reservations and reasonable prices for the festivities. Out of all the local light shows and holiday festivities, I think this is one of the best values. read more

The staff here is incredible! My dad and I brought my six-month-old son to the Butterfly Festival today, and the baby had a complete poop disaster just before we arrived, so we ran a little late for the butterfly release that we had a ticket for. They very kindly accommodated us and brought us a few butterflies to release and were just so great about it. One of the women staff members even very kindly took a dirty diaper off of our hands to throw away! They really went above and beyond to make our day, and I am so thankful. read more

To advertise that your Family Hayrides are safe and socially distanced is a complete disgrace. I was just there with my family and the line snaked around and around and everyone was packed all together. Many, many people were not even wearing masks. You should be selling your tickets ahead of time to ensure you are limiting the amount of people who are there at the same time. I even called ahead and was told that I could only buy my tickets in person when I got there. Shame on you, Colonial Gardens read more

My boyfriend and I stopped at Colonial Gardens (late in the summer for planting) last weekend. John, one of the staff, joined us as we were perusing the plants. We described our challenge, limited space running the length of the house and a hot sidewalk, and he gave us great counsel recommending two native grasses, Standing Ovation and Chameleon and some Russian Sage. We bought 10 plants and John gave us detailed instructions on how to plant, feed and water them. Two days after we picked them up I had questions about planting we hadn't discussed. I called the garden center only to learn John had gone for the day. To my surprise upon leaving my name and number with them I received a call from John who stepped us through my concerns and gave us very helpful advice about the importance of covering the ground cover (we'd purchased separately) with mulch so the plants didn't get too hot. A quick trip for mulch and we ended up with a lovely garden in the front of the house. We really enjoyed working with John. He was personable, knowledgeable and fun to work with. I highly recommend Colonial Gardens. Their plants were in excellent condition and the prices consistent with similar garden centers in the area. We look forward to returning next spring! read more

I bought 3 crested cream legbar chicks in May, enticed by their informational flyer about their large blue eggs and that we could buy knowing they were all egg laying hens. After spending over $500 on equipment and food, they are starting to die from Marek's disease. An untreatable viral disease that they should have been vaccinated for at 1-day old. Watching the chicks die at 4 months (1 month before they start laying eggs!) by paralysis of their legs and wings has been a horrible experience, plus at least $200 in vet bills. When I called Colonial Gardens I was told it was up to us to vaccinate, I said that was impossible to do as they have to be vaccinated at 1-day old and the chicks were older than that when I bought them. They then suggested we call the breeder! We bought them from Colonial, not the breeder, and after spending at least $700 on the coop, food, wood chips, heat lamp, vet bills, etc. we have not had 1 'blue egg' that Colonial had been promoting on their flyer. Colonial should have informed us that they were not vaccinated chickens especially since we told them we knew nothing about chickens, and they are experienced with chickens. read more

I went for my first time today and had a great time until the end. Me and my coworkers were standing in the parking lot catching up and this man (the boss) puts his highbeems on and starts flooring it at us. We jump out of the way and he proceeds to tell us that he is going to call the cops if we don't leave. I personally would have had an issue if he just drove over to use, but the man legit but me and 5 others in danger. Very unprofessional and highly advise people not to stand in the parking lot unless your looking to get ran over by an older male that has nothing better to do. read more

I bought a blueberry bush for 40 bucks in June 25th 2017. It has reddish leaves and I thought they we're related to season related. Once i saw these spots spreading to other potted plants in a few days , enquired with an experienced gardener and was told its a kind of fungal disease that's difficult to control, so went back to colonial for an exchange or return as this plant already was diseased when i bought it. They not only refused tout also tried to sell me fungicides for a hefty price. I had better luck at other nurseries where they stand by their plants for an year. read more
